Dalbeattie Learning Campus Wins Best Social Infrastructure Award

The prestigious international Partnership Awards that took place at the Hilton Park Lane Hotel, London, named the Dalbeattie Learning Campus, an ‘all through’ campus consisting of nursery, primary and secondary education set in an innovative landscaped setting, the ‘Best Social Infrastructure’ project. Delivered for Dumfries and Galloway Council in a collaborative partnership approach with hub South West, the learning campus features multiple ‘learning bases’ that provide flexible and functional spaces aimed at a focus on lifelong learning and vocational qualifications, as well as traditional school subjects. “This has been a fantastic evening, and a just recognition of the work hub South West, GRAHAM and Dumfries and Galloway Council have put into the Dalbeattie Campus, as well as a clear indicator of what can be achieved in partnership,” said Michael McBrearty, Chief Executive of hub South West. Valued at £24 million, the project saw 58% of all sub-contracting work packages going to local businesses as part of hub South West’s commitment to ensuring that local construction projects support businesses and employees within local communities. As part of the project’s additional development benefits 13 delegates were upskilled, 2 graduates were recruited, 9 N and SVQ completions for subcontractors were achieved, and 17 work placements were secured. “Providing the best start in life for all of our children is a priority for our Council. So, I’m delighted that our Council is being recognised for the excellence of the first of our new learning campuses. Dalbeattie Learning Campus is a first class facility that is appropriate for the 21st century and transforming education in Dalbeattie,” said Councillor Jeff Leaver, chair of Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Children, Young People and Lifelong Learning (CYPLL) committee. The Awards took place on Thursday, 10th of May, and were attended by over 700 people to celebrate the best in Public/Private Partnership (PPP) projects. The Partnership Awards, now in its 20th year, is the largest event in the industry and covers projects across Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

Morrison Construction Builds Largs Campus

Hub South West, an infrastructure partnership, has delivered the new £44 million Largs Campus, one of the biggest projects it has undertaken. Built by Morrison Construction, the new facility aims to start a new era in education in the Ayrshire coastal town. Largs Primary and St Mary’s, the primary schools incorporated into the new campus, moved in yesterday together with Early Years nurseries. The relocated Largs Academy will also join them on the 18th of April. The new campus will accommodate more than 2,000 pupils and is part of North Ayrshire Council’s biggest ever investment that includes two theatres, a gym hall believed to be the biggest in the UK, and art classrooms with balconies that enable outdoor working with vires of the stunning Largs Coastline. “The facilities at Largs Campus are going to be the best in Scotland. We will have the best sport facilities in Scotland, if not the UK,” said Councillor John Bell, cabinet member for education and youth employment. “We have invested heavily in the nursery and have state-of-the-art facilities that incorporate parent rooms, family rooms and imaginative play and learning areas for our young people. I am so proud of this facility and know that the young people have a fantastic environment to attain and achieve.” Moreover, this project supported 25 work placements, 13 apprenticeships and created 73 jobs. “Students have been given exposure to the construction industry, small businesses have expanded and there has been a positive impact on the local economy,” added Allan Cunningham, operations director of Morrison Construction. “hub South West is delighted to handover this wonderful new learning environment to North Ayrshire Council,” said Michael McBrearty, chief executive of hub South West. “Largs Campus is an impressive and contemporary educational facility set in a fantastic location. It will provide an inspirational environment in which pupils can learn and thrive. It will be a real asset to the local community.”

The Supplier Showcase and the Lanarkshire Business Week

The hub South West, the construction and infrastructure focused partnership, will support the Lanarkshire Business Week, taking place in the last week of February, with two key events. In one of them, over 50 members belonging to the construction sector will be meeting at South Lanarkshire Council’s offices in Hamilton for a networking session on Tuesday, the 27th of February. The second event will see potential suppliers to the construction industry attending a forum that will offer them the opportunity to showcase their attributes to major companies. The Supplier Showcase will be held on Friday, the 2nd of March at Rutherglen Town Hall, Main Street, Rutherglen G73 2JJ, in partnership with Clyde Gateway Lanarkshire. Hub South West’s development programme was created as a partnership between local authorities, the NHS, blue light services, and a clutch of Tier One contractors, including Morisons, Graham, Morgan Sindall, and Keir, aiming to secure at least 65% of major infrastructure contracts for local businesses, recycling the local pound, and creating opportunities for businesses in the South West Scotland to thrive and expand. “Hub South West is committed to engaging positively with the locally based supply chain with a view to helping them improve their chances of gaining hub contracts,” said Michael McBrearty, CEO at hub South West. “By doing this, around £500 million of the anticipated construction spent over the next five years will result in contracts for local companies and jobs for local people”. The Supplier Showcase will accommodate 35 stands, from which 15 are reserved for Lanarkshire based businesses. Additionally, there will be learning and information sessions running alongside the event, as well as opportunities to ‘meet the buyer’, free tea and coffee, and a buffet lunch around 12 noon. Anyone interested in attending should visit the hub South West website or contact Margaret Milton on 01698 464 556. Unfortunately, the stands are all sold out now, but you can still attend the event for free as a delegate.
