Cembrit Installs Board at Twickenham Stadium

Cembrit was part of the recent redevelopment of the East Stand at Twickenham stadium as it installed its heavy duty board. The major redevelopment project was led by designed and architect KSS, who expanded the stand to offer six floors of stylish event space, including eight brand new facilities delivering a bespoke hospitality experience for fans. Working on the interior design concept and delivery of the project were Wildfire London. The Cembrit HD heavy board was installed in the British Airways Rose Garden roof terrace on Level 5. The Hayes branch of Minster supplied the board, which is now located in the wings of the facility, as well as on the walls of the adjacent L5 concourse where impact resistance was important as crowds are moving in confined spaces. A lot of the wall finishes in the Rose Garden are also fixed through the Cembrit boards, including the brick slips behind the rotisserie section. “Cembrit’s robust and weather resistant HD boards provided us with flexibility and multipurpose utility in meeting the complex project requirements. Their technical advisors were also helpful and informative in pursuing the goals of the project,” commented Kenji Ikegaya, an architect at the practice. Cembrit HD (Heavy Duty) is a Class A2-s2, d0 fire rated high density building board comprising cement, cellulose and mineral fillers. It is ideal for ‘sealing’ buildings under construction as it is impact resistant and can be left exposed without additional treatment. HD is also extremely versatile and can be used as partitioning and is popular in offsite and SIPS construction as well as internal applications.

London School of Economics Celebrates Milestone

A project milestone has been achieved by the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) on its new Marshall Building. After the demolition of the existing structure at 44 Lincoln’s Inn Fields, Mace commenced construction work on the redevelopment project. In order to improve the impact, effectiveness and appeal of private contributions to the public good, the new building will contain The Marshall Institute for Philanthropy and Social Entrepreneurship, founded by Sir Thomas Hughes-Hallett and Sir Paul Marshall. The new building will also house the academic departments of Accounting, Finance and Management, teaching facilities, as well as sports and arts rehearsal facilities including a Sports England standard multi-purpose sports hall for use by staff and students. “This is a real milestone for the project, and we look forward to working with Mace over the next two years to turn our plans for the Marshall Building into reality. The demolition of the existing buildings has gone very well, and our success to date is a reflection of all of the hard work put into the project so far by the entire team,” said Kenneth Kinsella, Director of Capital Development for LSE. This is the second collaboration between Mace and LSE, which have previously worked on the Centre Buildings Redevelopment, due to be completed this year. “Over the last four years we have built a fantastic working relationship with LSE, first with the redevelopment of the Centre Buildings and now with the Marshall Building. They are a fantastic client, always pushing us to be more ambitious; and we are extremely pleased that they have chosen Mace to deliver the second phase of this very important project. The Marshall Building will be an iconic addition to the LSE’s campus, and we have been working closely with the architects, Grafton, to bring this ground-breaking design to life,” added Terry Spraggett, Managing Director of Public Sector Construction for Mace. The Marshall Building project is expected to be completed in 2021.

Holder Mathias completes ‘Livin’ student resi scheme in Cardiff city centre

Holder Mathias has completed work on a 136 student ‘studio’ bedroom development called “Livin” at 21-27 City Road in the centre of Cardiff. In support of the regeneration of this important student area, the Livin scheme has been designed as a simple, yet eye-catching addition to the diverse and eclectic mix of properties that characterise City Road. The result is a building with a well-proportioned composition and a striking frontage, comprising port-hole windows and a finely profiled metal sheet cladding that together provide a rhythmic rigour and a richly textured finish. Conceived to express the typological nature of student residential accommodation, this architectural design is combined with a palette of materials that promote a positive visual dialogue with the other buildings on City Road, enriching the streetscape. To fulfil the site’s maximum development potential, Holder Mathias considered it as three sections, with floor plans, sections and elevations disposed and configurated to be responsive to the site’s unique geometry. Existing and emerging building concepts were used to determine the height of the six-storey block, ensuring it complements the profile of surrounding developments. Stephen Hill, partner at Holder Mathias, which is based in Cardiff, said: “In response to the eclectic nature of City Road, the new Livin student residential block at 21-27 City Road marks the start of a ‘redevelopment renaissance’ in the area, providing it with a vibrant and visually striking addition to the street scene, as well as a quality benchmark for the continued redevelopment of this well-connected area.” The scheme is situated within easy walking distance of city centre amenities and key public transport nodes, including rail and bus routes. Directors at Modra Investments Ltd, added: “As a student accommodation developer, we are always proud to be part of the redevelopment of an area. We believe that the Livin City Road student site design promotes an exciting aesthetic whilst setting a design benchmark for the overall street scene.”

Student Accommodation Project Moves Forward in Sheffield

A redevelopment programme in Sheffield has moved into the next phase as a deal is reached between the developers and a student accommodation provider. The Sheffield City Centre project would lead to the creation of over 800 student rooms as well as a range of shops and cafes. At the moment, the site is occupied by the former Stokes Tiles Centre and a collection of other surrounding properties. The plans will lead to a 12-story construction that so far has been progressing well, with an exchange of contracts taking place between Litton Buccleuch (Moore Street) Ltd and a provider of student accommodation. The plans for the site involved four interconnection building blocks that will offer flats, retail space and cafes on the ground floors of the buildings. More detailed planning discussions have been scheduled to take place with Sheffield City Council and it is thought that the full planning application will be completed and ready to be submitted soon. The project is expected to begin in May 2018, subject to the plans receiving approval, with the redevelopment of the Sheffield location planned to take 24 months to complete. The scheme of works shows that the project will be complete and ready to accept students for the Autumn 202 term. Litton Buccleuch is carrying out this redevelopment project as a joint venture with the Bakewell-listed Property Group and the Edinburgh based Buccleuch Property. Sheffield City Council hope that the plans for this redevelopment will lead to more residential developments going forward, especially in the adjoining Devonshire Quarter of the City. The finished development will deliver student accommodation that has been finished to a high specification and located in between the City’s two Universities, Sheffield Hallam University and the University of Sheffield. The development will also be located within the inner ring road of the city. It is thought that this high spec development will appeal to the increasing number of students becoming more selective about their living accommodation, a trait most common in postgraduates.

Tynecastle Redevelopment Work Gets Under Way

Building work has started on Hearts’ main stand with the demolition of the existing stand at Tynecastle. The club shop, old stadium offices and an adult education centre will be torn down to create space for the new £12 million scheme. The City of Edinburgh Council approved planning permission for the work last month and the club has spent the last few weeks clearing the site. Workmen have now moved in to start taking down the old club office building for the initial phase of the redevelopment. The existing, 102 year old, dilapidated stand will be replaced by the new stand and will house 7,290 seats that will increase stadium capacity to more than 20,000. There will be hospitality lounges, new offices, a roof terrace, state of the art dressing rooms, a directors’ suite, media facilities, ticket kiosks and a new Tynecastle Nursery School. The architect behind the design is Jim Clydesdale and he will also be responsible for the other three stands at Tynecastle. The whole project is set to be complete by September next year and will complete the rebuilding of the ground. While the work is completed, Hearts’ stadium shop and offices have been relocated to the back of the Wheatfield Stand, where they will be situated throughout the whole of the building work. The plan is for the new stand to be constructed around the current one, the inside of which will then be excavated next summer. The Tynecastle Stadium redevelopment plan was approved by councillors last month. Hearts owner Ann Budge said last month that she expects the current 17,400 capacity to be unaffected while the work takes place. “Inevitably there will be a bit of disruption because it is a big building programme but we absolutely keep that to a minimum and the supporters who still want to come and sit in the old stand will do so,” she added.

Foster & Partners Chosen for £7.1m London Zoo Job

Foster & Partners has been selected for a £7.1 million overhaul of Cedric Price’s pioneering 1965 Snowdon Aviary at London Zoo. The firm is set to transforms the Grade II listed building, which was recently added to Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register. It will be transformed into a new walk-through colobus monkey enclosure, which will provide visitors with an ‘up-close experience of the stunning primates’. Conceived by Antony Armstrong-Jones (Lord Snowdon, who studied architecture at Cambridge) and delivered by architect Cedric Price and engineer Frank Newby, the structure next to the Regent’s Canal has four large tetrahedral frames and became Britain’s first walk-through aviary when it opened 51 years ago. It is one of the zoo’s 13 listed structures. The client, the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) described the appointment of Foster & Partners as ‘symbolic’, given Price’s manifest influence on Foster’s work. Director David Field commented: “It’s fitting that a structure with such a unique history should be given new life by a world-class firm with such a strong heritage. “Our most ambitious project to date, the new aviary will reflect our decades of animal expertise and delivering innovative visitor experiences. “London Zoo has a long history of leading the way in architecture and design and has many listed buildings that have stood the test of time.” Norman Foster added: “The Snowdon Aviary [is] a rare example of a completed work by Cedric Price. I have a particular personal affection for it as it shows most strongly the influence of our mutual friend and mentor Buckminster Fuller.” “The redevelopment of the aviary is a unique opportunity to preserve this exceptional structure and the legacy of pioneering architecture at ZSL London Zoo. It will be a great privilege to be able to contribute to the tradition of contemporary architectural additions at one of London’s most cherished institutions.”
