SGB MONORAIL SOLUTION INCREASES ACCESS ON MAJOR CAMBRIDGE DEVELOPMENT PROJECT

When an innovative new access solution was required for a major office accommodation development in Cambridge, construction access specialists SGB was quick to answer the call and provide a solution which combined mastclimber units with a special monorail system. The resulting access solution provided maximum flexibility for the site construction personnel, while helping reduce both costs and installation times. “The Station Road development comprises two 8-storey blocks which now offer luxury office accommodation,” explains SGB site manager, Mark Newton. “We were approached to become involved by façade installation specialists Dane Architectural. Their teams were going to be installing glass reinforced concrete columns and large areas of external glazing, and so would require an access solution that combined maximum flexibility with maximum safety.” Responding to the challenge, the SGB team worked closely with Dane Architectural to develop a bespoke solution that would satisfy Dane’s specific requirements. The result was a system based on a series of mastclimber base units surrounding each building, which were then connected together at the top to create a unique monorail system. This allowed the Dane teams to use hoists positioned on the working platforms to raise materials up. The individual platforms were then able to move horizontally along the monorail, thus providing the teams with far better access to the building’s facades than would have been the case with alternative solutions. “The flexibility and enhanced level of access made the installation process far easier and faster than it might otherwise have been,” adds Mark. “By providing simultaneous access to different parts of the buildings the system shortened the installation schedule and so helped reduce costs. Having hoists positioned on the platforms also meant that façade materials could be lifted into position without needing to tie up any the main site cranes.” “The SGB solution proved to be both innovative and very effective,” adds Gary Redhead of Dane Architectural. “One of the main attractions was that it offered access to multiple areas of the facades at the same time. That degree of access speeded up the proceedings and it certainly made life easier for our installation teams.” For more details, visit www.sgb.co.uk, call 01372 381 300, follow ‘SGB a BrandSafway Company’ on Linkedin, or @SGB_Brand_UK on Twitter.

SGB ACCESS SYSTEM SPECIFIED FOR MAJOR MANCHESTER DEVELOPMENT

An integrated access system from the UK’s leading scaffolding and access system provider has been used on a major new residential development in Manchester. A total of 71 mastclimbers have been provided by SGB, for the creation of the Clipper’s Quay project which has been built by Sir Robert McAlpine in Salford Quays. The Clipper’s Quay project includes five blocks of between nine and 11 storeys, incorporating various commercial spaces and over 600 residential units, and it is believed to be one of the largest private rented sector developments outside London. “Scaffolding access was originally considered for this project, but a mastclimber solution proved to be much more cost-effective,” explains SGB’s Business Development Manager, Karl Hancock “We have worked with Sir Robert McAlpine on previous projects, so they were aware of our capabilities in servicing a large project such as this. They also knew that we could supply a range of different mastclimber solutions and associated equipment to suit the different requirements which a project such as this creates.” SGB worked closely with their client over an 18-month period, right from the design stage right through to delivery. “Being involved from a very early stage helps us to design an access solution which meets the client’s specific needs right from the outset, and which is also sufficiently flexible to accommodate any changes or unexpected requirements which arise over time,” adds Karl. “In this instance we created a system which included a combination of single and twin mastclimbers, and this proved to be an extremely practical and cost-effective solution.”   For more details, visit www.sgb.co.uk, call 01372 381 300, follow ‘SGB a BrandSafway Company’ on Linkedin, or @SGB_Brand_UK on Twitter.

SGB Creates a Special System for a Demolition Project

SGB provided a scaffolding solution that made a demolition project on the banks of the River Thames a success. The demolition was completed safely due to the highly unusual scaffolding system created by the company, which had part of it covered by the river water during the process. “This was a challenging project due to the location of the building, which was built out into the river, from a site close to Blackfriars Bridge,” explained SGB’s Southern Design Manager, Brendan Fox. “Fortunately, Tideway knew that we have experience in designing this type of structure for other demolition and construction projects on the banks of the Thames. That experience was a key point in allowing us to create a successful scaffolding solution.” The system created by SGB included large steel brackets being attached to the concrete columns on which the building stood, later on used to support a series of beams which provided a solid base on which the scaffolding could sit. Because the system was going to be regularly covered by water, it had to be strong enough to be able to accommodate the force of the water flow and adapt on a daily basis. The team on site had to remove and reinstall the toe-boards every few hours to make sure they were not going to get damaged by the flow. “The scaffolding had to be constructed in such a way that it could be reduced in height, as the demolition work gradually lowered the height of the building,” explained Brendan. “The demolition materials had to be removed from the site via the river, so our design had to include various protection and containment features, which would prevent those materials from falling into the water. We also had to allow for the presence of a large barge carrying an 80-tonne crane which was floated in alongside the building.” Brendan concluded by saying that no matter how challenging a project is, safety always has to come first. Therefore, the system was subjected to a BS5975 Category 2 internal approval procedure and a client approval, before being used on the demolition work.

SGB Announces Four-Year Contract With Countryside

SGB, a leading scaffolding and access system provider has revealed more details about a significant new deal that has been made with a major UK property development company. The deal is expected to last for four years and will see SGB appointed as the sole scaffolding provider for the North West division of Countryside. This amazing deal with the housebuilder has a contract value of around £13 million. The negotiations for this new deal were led by the Business Development Manager of SGB, Jason Milner. The company has said that they are proud to announce this new partnership with Countryside. The scaffolding and access company is currently at work on 23 live sites, with more expected to follow. The major contract with the property development company will be a great boost to the company’s planned growth strategy that will take place over the course of the next four years. The Countryside work will be managed mainly at SGB’s Manchester Depot. The General Manager, Alan Arthur has said that the company has successfully proved to their new partner they have the size, strength and capabilities for this deal, offering an opportunity that few other scaffolders, if any, will be able to match. SGB is a part of the Brand Energy & Infrastructure Services group, and has managed to make this deal with Countryside due to the hard work and commitment shown by their team working in Manchester, who have managed to deliver around 3,400 units of scaffolding over the course of the past five years in this area alone. Now that the North West division partnership has been agreed, SBG is working with Countryside in order to extend the contract model to other areas of the UK. The company has already managed to secure contracts that relate to two new sites developed by Countryside’s Midlands office, and it has been predicted that there will be more project agreements to follow.
