THE INPUT GROUP has pledged its support to PASIC, a support service for the families of children with cancer in the East Midlands, to begin the first chapter of its corporate charity partnership. The Input Group, whose headquarters are in Derby, kickstarted its efforts on behalf of the charity in December to coordinate the delivery of over 200 Christmas presents during the month across several drop off points. The full-service construction firm also supported with deliveries from other PASIC charity partners, with more than 100 families benefitting from the team’s efforts. Chris Monk, managing director at The Input Group, said: “We believe that the work being carried out by PASIC is truly life changing for families in the community, and as a family business, we are delighted to work with them as they carry out their mission. “PASIC work tirelessly to create a positive, lasting impact in the lives of brave young people and their loved ones. We’re pleased to have played some part in PASIC’s Christmas appeal and festivities and look forward to future opportunities to support them throughout 2022.” Louise Towse, chief executive of PASIC, said: “We’re so grateful to The Input Group for making the coordination of Christmas presents run as smoothly as possible, with their generous offer of time, labour and transport. CONSTRUCTION STARTS ON EXTENSIVE WOLVERHAMPTON SCHOOL WORKS

NATIONAL contractor The Input Group has started work on site at St Edmunds Catholic Academy with an extensive multi-million-pound expansion of three school buildings. Located in Compton Park Road, adjacent to the Wolves Academy and training ground in Wolverhampton, The Input Group was appointed by the academy to carry out vast double and single storey extension and refurbishment works to existing structures across the campus. This includes doubling the size of the dining area with a single storey extension and refurbishment, alteration works to the sports hall, creating a two-storey additional classroom space, the refurbishment and reconfiguration of existing areas to form supplementary science labs, a staff room, and lecture theatre as well as all associated external works. Chris Monk, managing director at The Input Group, said: “We really enjoy working on education projects and supporting the learning environment of the next generation, so this is a really exciting, flagship scheme for The Input Group team and we’re very pleased to have commenced works on site. “The project spans the entire campus, with extensive expansion works giving the school much needed additional space, especially when it comes to teaching areas – which is certainly required post Covid.” Project manager, Paul Greaves added: “Logistically, the site will present some challenges as it shares an access road with neighbouring homes and the training ground. However, since we started on site last week everyone has been incredibly friendly and accommodating, which has created a really nice working environment. We’re therefore looking forward to cracking on with construction and reaching the next milestone.” The Input Group has also designed and provided all the safety signage for the site to ensure there is clear wayfinding for the campus and surrounding area, especially when the students arrive back at school in September. The design team, alongside The Input Group, includes architecture firm CBP Architects, principal designer GNA Surveyors, M&E consultant I.E.B.S, and structural engineers Moran Structural Consultants. MENTAL HEALTH AND SAFETY: HOW CAN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY DO BETTER TO IMPROVE ALL KINDS OF WELLBEING?

HEALTH and safety has never been more important than it is right now. As we emerge from lockdown where both physical and mental health were at the forefront of our minds, it is no surprise that, in an industry where stringent safety measures have always been paramount, these considerations are still a key focus. Mental health in particular is absent from risk assessments and H&S forms. Chris Monk, managing director of The Input Group, considers how the industry can continue to work towards the highest standards of health and safety, in all senses. “From the pyramids to Boris Johnson’s commitment to ‘build, build, build’, construction has always been seen as a marker of progress, socially and economically. However, despite its obvious importance, working in construction runs the highest risk of any industry in the UK. A study by GoCompare Life found that construction accounts for 17% of workplace fatalities and separate research indicated that construction workers have some of the worst mental health in the country. “From a physical safety perfective, working with heavy machinery, potentially dangerous materials, and often at great heights will obviously come with risks – which is why we need stringent safety measures and a zero-tolerance approach to accidents and injuries. As an industry, we cannot accept anything less than watertight health and safety policies, with staff and public wellbeing woven through every decision. “While Network Rail’s LTIFR (Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate) target sits at 0.0139 per 100,000 hours worked, we strongly believe in always striving for zero injuries, a zero LTIFR, and a zero AFR (Accident Frequency Rate). At The Input Group, we’ve developed our own CONCEPTZERO policy, which underpins everything we do and ensures we do all we can to avoid injuries and accidents. We’re passionate about paving the way for CONCEPTZERO to be the industry standard. “In turn, the reduction of physical health risks will help to alleviate the stress of working in a dangerous environment. This will inevitably improve employee wellbeing as mental health and physical health go hand-in-hand to increase all round job satisfaction. “Health and safety goes beyond risk assessments, high-vis jackets, and hard hats, but instead should be intrinsic to every project and process. Quality control must apply to everyone involved, from contractors to cleaners, and be integrated into the supply chain. From clear working areas and tidy walkways to meticulous signage and well-planned working sites, it’s crucial to reflect health and safety in everything you do to ensure zero accidents and injuries. “Through dedicated health and safety executives and the employment of management software like ProCore, a stricter approach to health and safety can and should be employed industry-wide to improve the wellbeing of everyone involved in a construction project. “Physical health and safety is, of course, only one side of the coin and mental health should always be a top priority for construction firms. The Chartered Institute of Building found that 70% of construction workers surveyed in 2019 had experienced feelings of depression and 87% had experienced anxiety. “The ideal situation would be to see dedicated mental health first aiders and comprehensive support systems as common practice in all companies. Nonetheless, positive steps towards improving mental health across the sector are already being made. “The Stop. Make a Change campaign combines a celebration of World Mental Health Day and the European Week for Safety and Health to focus on the health and wellbeing of construction professionals to build a healthier, safer industry. INPUT GROUP BOOSTS TRAVEL AND LEISURE WITH SIX COMPLETED SCHEMES

THE INPUT GROUP is celebrating the completion of six developments across the Midlands and Yorkshire – including Sheffield, Castleford and Market Harborough railway stations, Sheffield Meadowhall Interchange and two new Orangetheory Fitness studios – helping to bolster the hard-hit leisure and travel sectors. The projects, which are part of the specialist contractor’s large portfolio of leisure and transport projects across the region, required a range of installation works to create and improve public facilities. The Input Group’s £2.8 million transformation at Castleford train station was carried out in a bid to improve passenger experience. The team worked to create new high-quality waiting facilities – which comprised a ticket vending machine, seating area, a disabled toilet, and information and retail facilities – as well as refurbishing the station’s car park to provide 65 parking spaces, CCTV, lighting and improved pedestrian and cycle access. Market Harborough station also benefitted from a brand-new cycle hub. Part of East Midlands Railway’s £1 million commitment to increasing cycle provision across its network, the completed hub now provides 100 spaces in a secure storage facility with accompanying CCTV. Chris Monk, managing director at The Input Group, said: “As a Derby-based business, we have a lot of links to the region, so we find it really fulfilling when we complete projects in the Midlands and surrounding areas that help to support and grow the local economy. Both the travel and leisure sectors are industries that suffered throughout the pandemic, so helping to create and improve facilities that encourage public spend to re-boost these industries is incredibly important to The Input Group.” The team also made improvements to two railway stations in Sheffield, installing anti-slip tiling and wider entrance doors at Sheffield station to increase access to the external taxi rank and cycle hub, and upgrading Sheffield Meadowhall Interchange’s car park through resurfacing and the installation of a new CCTV system. Infrastructure works were also carried out at the station, which will allow for electric vehicle charging stations to be installed in the future. Chris added: “While we often work on transport and railway projects, we have also recently completed two fitness studios in Derby and Nottingham for Orangetheory Fitness – an American fitness brand that is now expanding across the UK. We will be working on completing 40 gym studios for the brand across the Midlands and Northern England, which will be a great addition to our portfolio of leisure schemes.” In both studios, the team worked to complete the design according to Orangetheory’s brand guidelines, carried out the mechanical and electrical installation of all equipment, and created entrance ways, office facilities, toilets, locker rooms, changing cubicles and showers. Adam Busby, sales director at Orangetheory Fitness, said: “Launching our third studio in the East Midlands, and the second studio with The Input Group is really exciting. Both Derby and Nottingham have so many new businesses and an array of culture, cafes and restaurants, there’s a wonderful community feel to these cities, which is perfect for the local community feel we like to create for our members.
