Volunteers sought to mentor construction workers of the future

Construction professionals are being urged to act as mentors for young people training to become the next generation of workers in the industry. The West Midlands Construction UTC (WMCUTC), which is sponsored by CITB, is appealing for volunteers to help its 14 to 19-year-old students gain a deeper insight into careers in the building sector. It is hoped the mentoring programme will help to broaden the horizons and aspirations of the students, as well as building their understanding of the world of work. Among the responsibilities of the mentors, who can be from any area of the industry, will be to attend meetings with the pupils twice a year and to attend a special half-day training session. They will also be required to provide support to the students and answer any questions they may have in between meetings over email. The WMCUTC, which is based in Wolverhampton, is hoping to sign up enough mentors for every one of the students enrolling for the term starting in September 2016. It was successful in meeting this aim for its September 2015 intake of students, with volunteers coming from construction firms including Barratt, Carillion, Hewden, Lovell Partnerships, Morgan Sindall, Redrow, Thomas Vale and Willmott Dixon. Catering to young people from Birmingham, the Black Country, Staffordshire and Shropshire, the centre provides technical learning alongside GCSEs. Bruce Boughton, People Development Manager at Lovell Partnerships said: “This is a unique partnership between business and the WMCUTC, and is a clear demonstration of the industry’s commitment to find, develop and encourage the next generation of construction trade, technical, and professional people.” To find out more information about the scheme, visit: http://www.westmidlandsconstructionutc.co.uk/ Source link

Ardmac Delivers ‘Best in Class ‘ Fit Out at 42-44 Fountain Street in Manchester

Ardmac Delivers ‘Best in Class ‘ Fit Out at 42-44 Fountain Street in Manchester. Situated in Manchester’s historic and prime business locations, Ardmac transformed 42-44 Fountain Street into a fantastic quality workspace for forward thinking businesses.  Wilton Developments acquired the former Spring House, a seven-storey, 26,000 sq ft building on behalf of an in-house client. Planning permission was secured to redevelop the ground floor for restaurant use, form a new glass fronted two-storey height reception, and refurbish the upper six floors to an exceptional standard. The remit also entailed working collaboratively with Manchester City Council to retain some features of the original building including the columns at the building entrance as well as delivering  a ‘Best In Class’ building. The interior fit out was beautifully remodelled and refurbished, with the reception area being turned into a striking double height atrium. Bespoke timber wall finishes identify the reception desk and create a structural backdrop that enhances the double height space. Pendant feature lights reinforce the cube element of the scheme and create a landmark feature visible from the street. The green wall and the natural oak timber gives warmth to the space and compliments the harder materials of steel, glass and stone. The light boxes enhance the buildings brand colours and create a feature that draws visitors to the lifts and through the space. Office air conditioning is served by a VRF system. The interior fit-out specification included: Office area luminaires are LED and are LG7 compliant 60-75mm from the void to the raised access floor Perforated metal ceiling tile Male and female WCs on each floor Club-quality basement shower/ locker room 2 lifts each 10 person Car parking spaces The EPC rating high end C Showers, club class changing facilities and bike storage are some of the added features of the project. The quality space and the flexibility of the floors means the building can accommodate requirements from 1,500 sq ft up to entire building of 22,150 sq ft.
