Business Stream and Castle Water will ‘keep each other under pressure’

Business Stream and Castle Water are both “committed to competition” and will keep each other under pressure in the English water retail market. Castle Water chief executive John Reynolds told Utility Week: “I am fascinated that we are both on the overlapping and neighbouring patch with Business Stream.” He said having two companies that are used to competing and are “committed to a competitive market” both being active and keeping each other under pressure is “a healthy situation to be in”. “It is very interesting to take competition from Scotland where they are incumbent and we’re clearly new entrant to England where we’re larger than they are, and seeing how that develops,” he added. “It is very constructive that we’ve got this combination of companies in southern England that are both committed to the market.” Castle Water bought the business customer base of Portsmouth Water when the incumbent water-only company announced its intention to exit the market in January this year. The Scottish new entrant then bought the business customers of Thames Water when the UK’s largest water company announced its exit from the market in July. Meanwhile, Scottish incumbent retailer Business Stream bought the business customers of Southern Water when it announced its exit at the end of June. Source link

Hope invests in rail-linked facilities

Cement firm Hope Construction Materials has revealed plans for three new distribution depots as part of a wider investment in rail freight. Despite being in the throes of an agreed takeover by Breedon, the first quarter of 2016 will see Hope open new rail facilities in Essex, London and Southampton. In Dagenham, Essex, a new rail-linked cement distribution depot and packing facility is being developed. This will see the introduction of cement supplied in Hope’s own branded bags. In Southampton a new ready-mix concrete plant and rail-linked aggregates depot will receive concreting aggregate for Hope’s Hampshire operations. Alongside the Olympic Park in Stratford, a new rail-fed aggregates depot will enable Hope to bring crushed rock into east London. This is the result of a partnership with rail freight operator DB Schenker. More than two thirds of Hope’s cement is distributed by rail from its twin-kiln plant in Derbyshire. Hope also transports much of its aggregate by rail, notably from Dowlow limestone quarry near Buxton. Hope also opened a new rail-linked cement, aggregates and concrete depot at Walsall in 2015. There is also investment going on at two other southeast depots. At Theale in Berkshire, where Hope has a rail-linked cement depot, a rail-fed aggregates facility has been added, along with a ready-mix concrete plant. And Hope’s Woodham depot is now able to supply ready-mix concrete across North Bucks. Hope Construction Materials chief executive Chris Plant said: “Hope has been growing steadily since launch three years ago and these latest depots are the culmination of our strategy to develop our plant network and improve the service we are able to give our customers. Together these developments represent a major investment in the business and their southeast locations mean that they are sure to add value in the future.” The Breedon Aggregates acquisition, announced in November, remains subject to regulatory approval but is expected to complete sometime during 2016. Until then, Hope says it will continue to operate as an independent company.     This article was published on 7 Jan 2016 (last updated on 7 Jan 2016). Source link

Increasing Worries For the Building, Design and Construction Industry

One of the increasing worries that have been highlighted to be a key issue for the building, design and construction industry in this country is the issue of skills shortages. This is a particularly pressing problem at this crucial time in our country’s history with the EU referendum, where the security of skilled European workers is still uncertain. Hudson Contract, based in the United Kingdom, have implemented a solution to this that it seems other businesses in the industry would be encouraged to follow as well. This is the creation of a new Apprenticeship Scholar Scheme that will encourage young people from all over the country to become the future workforce of Great Britain. Up to this current moment in time, the company has been able to support up to a grand total of 80 apprentices, of which 19 per cent have joined the bricklaying profession in the last half of the decade. Indeed, Mister David Jackson the founding mind behind the company has expressed his commitment to ensuring that younger generations of people are encouraged more than ever to pursuing the careers in building and construction that they want to.   With the creation of new apprenticeship schemes and sponsoring, Hudson Contract also ensures that many individuals who might not be able to afford such apprenticeship schemes are able to benefit from them as well, showing that all strata of society are welcomed by Hudson into the construction trade. With National Apprenticeship Week set to take place in early March next month, the company is therefore very keen to indicate the various ways in which it can  help young people starting work in the sector to thrive and gain valuable experience that will undoubtedly prove incredibly useful to them in the future impending years of their careers to come. Hudson Contract has announced its intention to include an extra 20 new youngsters into its apprenticeship scheme.

New Church in Cambridge Benefits from Sika Building Material

A fantastic new church in Cambridge valued at 4.3 million pounds will receive the fantastic benefit of being covered with a new building material provided by Sika Limited in order to ensure that those beneath the roof of the church are not soaked by the winter rain. Sika Limited have often worked on challenging projects and are well experienced in the field of building and construction, but this particular location in Cambridge presented them with a number of challenges. For a start was the fact that the newly built church and community hub for local residents and newcomers was valued at such a tidy sum of 4.3 million pounds: there was therefore a great deal at stake and Silka would have to ensure more than ever that its services were top notch quality. More practical concerns was the requirement that the roofing material that they applied should not in any way infringe on the architectural splendor of the structure. Whilst this might seem like an incredibly daunting challenge, Sika rose to the occasion and came up with a product known as Sika-Trokol SGK. This product was a special membrane appliance which, once applied to the roofing structure itself, would ensure that the roof was protected from strong rains and waters that are a frequent occurrence at this time of the year. In collaboration with the contracted work of Cambridge Flat Roofing, the work was duly and effectively completed, even managing to be finished earlier than the designated deadline of eight weeks. Indeed, Mister Wayne Farrington of Cambridge Flat Roofing, expressed his pleasure that the product was easily applicable to the roof structure and also met the impressive demands of the client. The solution itself will also ensure that the roof will not require a large amount of maintenance during the time that the Sika-Trokol SGK is there to protect it from the wear and tear of British weather conditions.

city regeneration delivers tranquility

REGENERATION SCHEME PRO-TECTS TRANQUILITY FOR ELDERLY IN THE CITY A new lease of life is being given to an iconic tower block in Liverpool city centre. Marwood Tower has been redeveloped by Liverpool Mutual Homes  in partnership with principal contractor Willmott Dixon Housing, and John McCall Architects. The existing tower block was refurbished, and a single storey extension built, to provide 81 apartments for the over 55s, complete with courtyard garden, bowling green and outdoor gym. The £9.5m development- in Gt Homer St- one of the city’s main arterial routes- forms part of the £150m Project Jennifer regeneration scheme. A key element of the build is the roof, executed by Churchmore. The advanced roofing technology specialist stripped the existing asphalt roof, and replaced it with a new vapour control layer, insulation, and mechanically fixed 350m2 Protan SE1.2mm standard overlap dark grey single ply to the concrete slap. Willmott Dixon project surveyor Dave Dobson observed, “Protan membrane gives us the product we wanted with the quality guarantee we required. Also, it offers a lightweight and efficient construction technique, which lent itself well to the constraints of operating on the roof of a 15 storey tower. The flexibility of Protan’s membrane also allowed for the weathering details to tie in nicely with the cladding.” Churchmore managing director Andy Monk added, “We chose Protan because it is a good product, easy to use, and we get excellent service: we can source not just the single ply membrane but the VCL and insulation from Protan, which further facilitates project efficiency.” Protan SE, available in 1.2mm, 1.6mm and 1.8mm, is developed to cope with even the most extreme weather conditions without detriment: it is certified to ≤ -30°. Hot-air welded at joints and mechanically fixed to the roof, the membrane achieves durability in excess of 30 years, with air leakage controlled/minimised in line with latest Building Regulations. Protan SE membrane is also certified to deliver, and potentially surpass, the energy efficiency requirements laid down in Approved Document L, and, under the Green Guide, achieve a A+ rating. The single ply membrane is just part of Protan’s comprehensive, quality offering, which includes green and protected roofing solutions. Established some 75 years ago, and still privately-owned, Protan is one of the top 3 membrane manufacturers in Europe. A full support service, from NBS specification and in-house CAD design through to technical advice is provided from Protan UK’s Warrington office.
