28 April 2016 | Herpreet Kaur Grewal Edinburgh City Council has awarded a contract to inspect the city’s walls to Amey – despite the provider being a part of the consortium responsible for safety issues at 17 of the city’s schools. Gordon Allan, Amey’s business director for consulting in Scotland said: “As an approved supplier to the Scottish Excel Framework [a procurement organisation dedicated to serve all local authorities and related organisations across Scotland], Amey was invited to tender for this contract and was named preferred bidder after a competitive bidding process.” Under the contract Amey will be “drawing on our consultancy expertise to catalogue the location and condition of retaining walls throughout Edinburgh so that the council’s maintenance team can develop a formal inspection and proactive maintenance schedule”. Councillor Alasdair Rankin, convener of the finance and resources committee, which made the award, said Amey has been “vetted as an ‘approved’ company to bid for the work”. Source link
Progress is continuing to take place with the construction work on the A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon improvement programme. This £1.5 billion improvement work has been taking place since November 2016. A year later it has been announced that the temporary bridge that has been erected over the A14 at Swansea will be taken down this week. This bridge has been an essential asset to the work carried out in this area as it has been used to carry 160,000 cubic meters of construction materials from the south to the north of the A14 over the course of the last 2 months. Highways England has commented on the construction work taking place to upgrade the road between Ellington and west of Huntingdon, which is the Milton junction on the Cambridge Northern Bypass. The use of the temporary bridge has helped the team working on the programme to carry out work and to prepare for the construction of the planned Swansea Interchange while trying to have a minimal impact on people’s journeys. The use of the temporary bridge has been just one of a number of different solutions that have been but in place in order to keep people moving on this route, and cause as little disruption as possible while the improvements are being made. The bridge will be taken down overnight and there are expected to be closures of the A14 when this takes place, on Monday 20th November, Tuesday 21st November and Saturday 25th November between junctions 24 and 31 from 9pm to 5am. The construction work on this road is expected to be completed by March 2021. The road has narrow lanes and a 40mph restricted speed limit in order to offer safe working conditions while the building work to improve the A14 is carried out while also ensuring that traffic is still able to make use of the roads.

Of course it was the focus on Housing that was of most interest to Saira Hussain. The founder of the multi-award winning Architectural and design company has said that more work needs to be done in order to overcome the housing challenges seen at the moment. It has been estimated that around 10,000 new homes would need to be built every year in the North West of England alone in order to keep in line with the growing population. This means that the Government need to be looking into intensive and widespread house building in order to meet the demand for housing that is leaving a lot of younger people stuck renting. Saira Hussain has said that she has spoken to a number of different people living in Lancashire and Manchester feel it is impossible to get onto the property ladder. At the moment the lack of housing stock is creating a demand, which is in turn driving up housing prices. On top of this, research has been carried out that shows that housing prices are set to increase by well over a quarter over the course of the next four years. This housing price increase is a reflection on the feeling that what the government is doing isn’t enough. The lack of sufficient action means that there will continue to be a shortage of homes, and therefore a demand that increases prices. There is also the question of where the new homes go. Most people suggest that building on brownfield is the solution, but this still doesn’t offer enough scope to meet the demand. Therefore, construction needs to go up, in the form of skyscrapers, or out, in to greenfield land when required.

Lambe Construction, Michael Lambe said last year, The Department for Education estimated that around 9,000 people who are aged between 16-24 living in the West Midlands were not considered to be in any form of education, employment or training.
