National Grid’s London Power Tunnels breakthrough completes £1 billion project’s tunnelling activity

National Grid’s £1 billion London Power Tunnels (LPT) project has achieved a major milestone with its final tunnelling breakthrough at Eltham substation in Greenwich. The last of the project’s massive tunnel boring machines (TBMs), named ‘Grace’, broke through on Saturday, having tunnelled over 11km eastwards from National Grid’s New Cross substation in Southwark. All 32.5km of the project’s underground route are now complete, with installation of 200km worth of high voltage cable – enough to stretch from London to Cardiff – already underway between substations at Wimbledon and Crayford. In total the project will have shifted 900,000 tonnes of earth – equivalent in volume to half of Wembley Stadium – with 99.98% of waste material diverted from landfill. The LPT project’s newly installed transmission infrastructure is due to be fully operational by 2026, with the aim of reinforcing and future-proofing London’s electricity network – and supporting Britain’s transition to net zero – as demand in the capital grows. Construction of the tunnels began in March 2020 with the tunnelling works undertaken by National Grid’s delivery partner HOCHTIEF-Murphy Joint Venture. Alice Delahunty, President of National Grid Electricity Transmission, said: “Our London Power Tunnels project has achieved a lot since it kicked off in 2020, but the final tunnelling breakthrough at Eltham is a particularly remarkable moment. “This complex engineering endeavour is now really taking shape, with completion of tunnelling now physically linking our sites across South London for the first time and meaning we can move on to the next chapter to progress our vital cabling work. “The outstanding effort by our project teams and suppliers is strengthening London’s electricity network and making sure it safely, reliably and efficiently powers homes and businesses in the capital for years to come.” Santiago Daniele, HMJV Project Director, said: “It’s been an incredible journey so far, from taking over our tunnel drive sites a week after the covid lockdown, to sinking eight shafts and undertaking five tunnel drives with four TBMs over the past three and half years. “With our final TBM drive breaking through at Eltham ahead of the original baseline programme, it’s testament to the collaboration, ingenuity and fantastic joint culture of all involved – despite all of the challenges faced. This remarkable achievement has laid a solid foundation for the Enterprise in achieving National Grid’s vision of rewiring London and connecting with the capital. “We’re incredibly proud to be delivering for National Grid a scheme of such significance – and being their delivery partner of choice for complex major infrastructure involved in LPT Phase 2.” Minister for Nuclear and Networks, Andrew Bowie, said: “Today’s completion is a huge milestone for the London Power Tunnels project, a superb feat of British engineering that will help future-proof our capital’s electricity network. “This is part of National Grid’s wider commitment to rewire and modernise London’s electricity network, significantly increasing London’s capacity and energy security for years to come.” Tunnelling on the LPT project was completed in three sections between existing National Grid substations – Wimbledon-New Cross (12km); New Cross-Hurst (18km); and Hurst-Crayford (2.5km) – with the help of four TBMs named Christine, Caroline, Edith and Grace. Breakthroughs previously took place at Eltham in June 2022 (TBM Christine tunnelling from Hurst), Wimbledon in July 2022 (TBM Caroline tunnelling from Kings Avenue), Crayford in January 2023 (Christine again tunnelling from Hurst) and Kings Avenue in April 2023 (TBM Edith tunnelling from New Cross). Vertical shafts ranging between 9-15m in diameter and up to 55m in depth were constructed along the route, serving as waypoints for the TBMs, and helping project teams safely access the tunnels for maintenance now and when operational in the future (headhouses will be built to cover the shafts for safe future use). The Hurst substation site recently saw a world record-breaking pour of cement-free concrete to fill the base of its 55 metre deep shaft following Christine’s two tunnel drives to Eltham and Crayford. In another first for LPT, National Grid’s new Bengeworth Road substation on the tunnel route in Lambeth is being built free from greenhouse gas SF6 – the only one of its kind to date in Britain and part of National Grid’s ambition for its infrastructure to be SF6-free by 2050. Manchester Piccadilly to refurbish platforms

A total of £1.67 million is to be invested to refurbish platforms 13 and 14 at Manchester Piccadilly Station. Network Rail teams will start to overhaul the lounge above the station’s busiest platforms which see up to 40,000 passengers every day. The investment will bring: During the upgrade work the toilets and seating areas will stay open, but it will see some changes for passengers – including the closure of the existing Costa coffee shop. Kyla Thomas, Network Rail station manager for Manchester Piccadilly, said: “The waiting area above platforms 13 and 14 is crucial to how we manage passengers getting safely on and off their trains, so it’s really important for us to make this investment so we can make it even better for customers. “While trains won’t be disrupted during the work, some of the facilities will be out of action while we build two new retail units and carry out a phased upgrade of the seating area and toilet facilities. I’d like to thank people in advance for their patience while we improve this well-used part of Piccadilly station for the tens of thousands of passengers who use it every day.” The waiting lounge revamp for passengers will begin on October 4 and will be complete in early 2024. It follows the recently completed investment to resurface platforms 13 and 14, paint new safety markings and install tactile studs along their lengths to improve accessibility for people with visual impairments. Dynamon launches ground-breaking Synthetic Telematics ‘virtual electric fleet’ feature

Dynamon launches ground-breaking Synthetic Telematics ‘virtual electric fleet’ feature

Dynamon has launched its ground-breaking Synthetic Telematics feature, which allows businesses to run a virtual electric fleet, modelling exactly how vehicles will perform in real world conditions. The technology, similar to that used by aerospace manufacturers and part of its ZERO software package, can either take existing telematics data or create its own for commercial vehicle fleets that don’t have the information, or can’t apply it. Using ZERO’s extensive, bespoke database of almost all electric commercial vehicles, fleets and consultants can firstly spec exact vehicles in detail, including options such as battery size, tyre choice, weights, optional extras and accessories. They can then create routes, using either existing journeys or by plotting new ones, and set up fleet movements in simulated scenarios that include real world geographic, traffic and road conditions. Added to this can be drop-offs, deliveries, rest stops or charging, as well as driving styles and weather conditions. Synthetic Telematics’ advanced analytic and predictive algorithms show how an electric fleet would operate, based on the parameters entered, which can then be adjusted to determine what a real-world fleet will really need to operate successfully, such as alternative charging methods, other vehicles, new routes or revised operational procedures. “Synthetic Telematics is game-changing because for the first time, fleets can now run their entire operation virtually before a wheel even turns for real,” said Dynamon CEO Angus Webb. “This allows them to make fully informed decisions in every area of procurement and planning, ensuring that the transition to electric is right first-time, avoiding expensive over- or under-speccing of vehicles and infrastructure.” Crucial to the proposition is the ability to create telematics data for fleets that need it, said Webb. Often, fleets may only have partial or incomplete data, or may only collect information on certain operational elements, such as drop off times. Fleets can also struggle to take the data they have from petrol and diesel vehicles and use it to predict how electric vehicles may perform. Synthetic Telematics solves all of this. “The modelling available with Synthetic Telematics changes the way businesses can plan for the future, because it lays out all the data they will need. It shows how vehicles will perform on different routes, in different temperatures. The level of detail is remarkable,” Webb added. Dynamon has done this through the creation of its own database of vehicle information, which included on-road testing for real-world efficiency figures and the calculation of factors such as the effect of certain options, such as different tyres or wheelbases. It can even model the effect of loads and wind direction on battery effectiveness. “We’re now at a stage where Synthetic Telematics can take over from testing. Fleets often try electric vehicles out, but how rigorous can their testing procedure be? Often it can be quite anecdotal, and limited: nobody has the time and money to test all EVs on every route, in all conditions. With Synthetic Telematics, you can do this,” said Webb. As part of the development of Synthetic Telematics, Dynamon undertook its own testing of vehicles on routes and then ran the same trials virtually, to ensure that the results through Synthetic Telematics were accurate. “What we saw was that the results of the modelling were remarkably similar, producing every data point a fleet would need. So, for example, Synthetic Telematics can model how a particular EV would perform if the route was on a Monday morning during rush hour, with a full load, in winter, showing efficiency at any point on a specific road,” said Webb. “Without this incredible level of detail, many fleets are doing fairly basic calculations on EV performance, taking battery size, approximate consumption and distance, and coming up with a number for range, charging need and cost. Synthetic Telematics, however, can show where batteries are being depleted most on a particular journey – perhaps because it is especially hilly, or has a lot of stop-start driving – allowing fleets to reroute if necessary to improve range, or choose another vehicle. “Synthetic Telematics will change the way fleets move to electric,” said Webb. “It allows them to be sure of the type of charging they will need, which vehicles to choose and how to adapt their working operation to accommodate electric. And they can do all of this in a risk-free virtual environment, saving them time and money and ensuring when they do transition to electric, it is right, first-time.” Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

Willmott Dixon appointed at Copr Bay project

Willmott Dixon appointed at Copr Bay project

Swansea Council has appointed Willmott Dixon to complete work at the Copr Bay district after the original contractor, Buckingham Group, went into administration. The Copr Bay scheme covers the area of the former St David’s Shopping Centre and across the new bridge over Oystermouth Road to Swansea Arena and the coastal park. Most of the scheme is complete and open, so it’s business as usual at Swansea Arena, the Copr Bay south car park, the coastal park, the Green Room Bar and Kitchen, and the residential unit on the north side of Oystermouth Road. Willmott Dixon, which has an office nearby in Cardiff, will focus on completing the car park on the north side of Oystermouth Road and some other snagging work on site. The St David’s multi-storey car park – which is earmarked for demolition – will remain open in the meantime A Swansea Council spokesperson said: “The Copr Bay district is at the heart of Swansea’s on-going regeneration of the city centre. When our contractors Buckingham went into administration, we had to act quickly to protect the council’s position and complete the unfinished work. We’re delighted to appoint Willmott Dixon, one of the country’s leading specialists, to manage the construction and ensure the unfinished work is completed as soon as possible. “The snagging works will now be finished as soon as possible, and work to finish the car park is anticipated for completion in the spring of 2024. The financial arrangements we have in place mean we don’t envisage these works leading to extra costs for the council or the taxpayer.” Neal Stephens, Managing Director for Willmott Dixon in Wales and West, added: “It is very sad what happened to Buckingham Group and to see their supply chain partners go through such a difficult period. We will try to use as many as possible as we complete this important project for Swansea. We have extensive experience of working in the local area and are pleased to be working with Swansea Council to bring this fantastic development to a fitting conclusion.” Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals
