Consultation launched for next stage of New Garden Square Neighbourhood

Moda, the UK’s leading investor, developer, and operator of large-scale rental neighbourhoods, has launched a consultation on proposals for a 37-storey build-to-rent development, forming part of the New Garden Square neighbourhood in Ladywood. The proposals are part of a new mixed-use community with up to 1,600 new homes, leisure, and public realm, all set around a striking publicly accessible linear park. Moda is already delivering 398 highly managed, pro-tech enabled build-to-rent homes at Phase I of New Garden Square. In June 2023, the build-to-rent operator announced it would be delivering the rest of the 11-acre site in partnership with Calthorpe Estates. There will be a joined-up focus on lifestyle, health and wellbeing, and tech, underpinned by social and environmental sustainability. Within the comprehensive masterplan affordable homes will be available at a Discounted Market Rent as part of New Garden Square’s inclusive residential offering. The latest proposals would deliver around 450 new homes alongside a dynamic variety of amenities, as well a space for retail, restaurant, or café floorspace. This will contribute to the ongoing regeneration of both the New Garden Square site, and Ladywood as a whole. Forming part of the emerging linear park, outdoor spaces in the form of courtyards and green public spaces will also be delivered. This will create exceptional spaces for new and existing residents to meet and spend time. Moda already has one operational neighbourhood in Birmingham – the award winning 481- home Mercian on Broad Street. As well as Phase I at New Garden Square, the 722-home community at Great Charles Square in the Jewellery Quarter is also under construction. Saif Uddin, Development Executive at Moda, said: “Moda has ambitious plans at New Garden Square, to deliver a ‘Moda neighbourhood’ alongside our partners at Calthorpe Estates. Our latest proposals demonstrate the scale of our ambition and the confidence we have in this location and in Birmingham. “Our inclusive plans will regenerate a brownfield site within Ladywood offering an extensive range of benefits to the existing local community and future residents alike. As long-term custodians of the communities we operate in, Moda will deliver a best in class, build-to-rent neighbourhood that provides new homes, new employment opportunities, a public park and an array of retail and leisure facilities, all adjacent to the new Edgbaston Village metro station. “To help bring our vision to life, we are holding a public consultation event on 24-25 October 2023.” A public exhibition is being held to offer residents, businesses, and community groups the opportunity to view and comment on the emerging proposals. This is taking place on 24-25 October 2023 3pm — 8pm at the Plough and Harrow, 135 Hagley Road Birmingham B16 8LS. The proposals will also be made available online at www.ngs-consultation.co.uk. City of Doncaster Mayor visits £525 Million Development site

Wilton Developments welcomed City of Doncaster Mayor, Ros Jones, to Doncaster North to showcase the site, which includes the UK’s largest consented industrial building adjacent to junction 6 of the M18. With Reserved Matters (detailed) planning consent for the first 2.26million sq. ft. of development, including permission for a 1.15million sq. ft. unit, it places Doncaster at the forefront of a unique opportunity. Joined by Doncaster’s Director for Place, Dan Swaine, and keen to hear about the 5,500 jobs which could be created across the 180 acre business park, Mayor, Ros Jones, said: “This is one of the most significant employment developments in the north of England. When finished it will total some 3.5million sq. ft., Doncaster North provides the opportunity to maintain the city at the forefront of logistics and manufacturing opportunities. Edwin James Group, a leading provider of multi-disciplinary engineering services, is nearing completion of a project to assist the North London Waste Authority (NLWA) in its £1.42 – £1.52 billion North London Heat and Power Project. The project aims to create the greenest Energy Recovery Facility in the country, along with state-of-the-art recycling facilities. Working together, group companies EJ Parker Technical Services and EJ Peak Technology Solutions delivered complex projects totalling over £37m, covering comprehensive mechanical and electrical (M&E) services, extensive automation and control implementation and the largest solar array in North London. EJ Parker Technical Services was responsible for the design, supply, installation and commissioning of wide-ranging M&E works. These included lighting, venting and AC, security and fire suppression, waste management, and rainwater collection. The team also installed 2,235 solar modules and 11 Solis Inverters that will produce renewable energy, equivalent to powering 300 homes a year. The implementation of this sustainable energy solution is projected to reduce CO2 emissions by 334,602 kg per year, equivalent to the impact of planting 8,830 trees annually. EJ Peak Technology Solutions was engaged to collate a comprehensive control philosophy for the site, including electrical and fibre optic network design, systems architecture, and various aspects of the infrastructure.  The team consulted with all package vendors in order to design and integrate their systems into the new bespoke SCADA (Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition) system and ensured that all logistical movements and efficient site operational needs were met whilst complying with necessary legislative requirements. Subsequently, Peak was commissioned to carry out the entire works scope, based on the approved design, including a new site-wide PLC control system, new SCADA build/deployment, and full design/integration of the new site-wide BMS system. Commenting on the project, Christopher Kehoe, CEO, Edwin James Group, said: “Given the complex and regulated nature of the project, the combined efforts of both companies have been crucial in its successful execution. We believe in harnessing innovative technologies and collaborative teamwork for a greener future and are proud to support the North London Waste Authority in its mission to establish the greenest waste hub in the country. Together, we are setting new standards for waste management, renewable energy generation, and carbon reduction.” The project was awarded by Taylor Woodrow as part of a major contract to deliver the first Reuse and Recycling Centre open to the public at the site. Edmonton EcoPark is a waste management site of approximately 38 acres. The existing Energy from Waste facility is coming to the end of its life, having served north London for over 50 years.  The redevelopment aims to generate electricity for 127,000 homes, provide hot water and heating for 60,000, and improve air quality using advanced technology, saving the carbon equivalent of removing 110,000 cars annually. Knightsbridge reaches new highs with LED industrial lighting

Knightsbridge reaches new highs with LED industrial lighting

The new Potentia LED high bay range from Knightsbridge – one of the UK’s leading manufacturers of wiring accessories and lighting – provides an ideal solution for industrial applications requiring versatility, flexibility, durability, control and performance. The high bays, which come in two sizes, incorporate tri-wattage and dual-CCT functions along with other innovative features to deliver long-life and powerful illumination. The high bays feature a selectable CCT switch, allowing users to adjust the colour temperature between 4000K and 5000K according to preference; and offer wattages of either 100W, 120W and 150W or 150W, 180W and 200W depending on model. Suitable for the toughest industrial environments, Potentia are rated to IK08, making them resilient in the face of impacts, and also IP65, ensuring resistance against dust and water ingress. This makes them well-suited for installations in challenging indoor or outdoor settings where protection against moisture and debris is crucial. Effective control is crucial to lighting performance, and Potentia offers a choice of approaches. First, built-in 0-10V dimming capability comes as standard, while the high bays are supplied with polycarbonate diffusers, ensuring even light distribution that makes them ideal for environments where cleanliness and hygiene are of importance. Second, a programmable microwave sensor is available which enables the user to set various parameters such as brightness, sensitivity, hold time, standby time and standby dimming. The sensor can be paired with a remote control, giving the ability to control settings to ensure adequate illumination while maintaining energy efficiency. Finally, when used with an addressable Digital Addressable Lightning Interface (DALI) control system, the DALI module allows the installer to assign an address and a control group to the fixture; this address and control group allows for grouping of fixtures into zones. Other accessories available include a 60o lens modifier, which reduces the beam angle from 90o  to 60o – important for high-ceiling installations, a smaller beam angle is required – and surface mounting brackets which allow for flush  mounting and so increase the number of applications for which Potentia is suited. With a five-year warranty and cutting-edge LED technology, Potentia is built to last, boasting an L90B10 rating of 50,000 hours, guaranteeing longevity and consistent performance. With Potentia, Knightsbridge delivers a powerful LED lighting solution for industrial applications that combines innovation, durability, and safety. Leeds Bradford Airport terminal regeneration to start

NI construction firm Farrans has been selected to deliver Phase 1 of the regeneration of Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA). LBA has announced an investment of over £100 million, and the construction firm has been appointed to build the terminal extension. Approved by Leeds City Council, the work is set to commence in autumn 2023 and is expected to complete in 2026. The regeneration will see a 9,500 sq. mt., three storey extension to the existing terminal, alongside a significant refurbishment of the current terminal building. Passengers will benefit from the creation of additional aircraft stands, more seating, faster security, new shops and eateries, and a larger baggage reclaim area and immigration hall, as well as improved access for passengers with restricted mobility. By 2030, the regeneration has the potential to create 1,500 new direct jobs at LBA and 4,000 new indirect jobs, as well as contribute a total of £940 million to the local economy*. The regeneration will also help LBA to further decarbonise its operations, as outlined in the airport’s 2030 Net Zero Carbon Roadmap, with the installation of new heating, lighting and machinery, including new baggage belts. It is expected that airlines attracted by the regeneration will accelerate the deployment of their newest, quietest and most efficient aircraft at the airport. Cathal Montague, Regional Director at Farrans Construction, said: “Leeds Bradford Airport has played an integral role in the ambitious growth of the city of Leeds and the wider Yorkshire region, supporting connectivity to some of the world’s best destinations for business and tourism. We are looking forward to bringing the vision for its next stage to life through the extension and modernisation of the terminal. This project will be a major boost to the construction industry with jobs created through apprenticeships, direct labour and supply chain. “We have had a strong connection to Leeds for many years, having delivered a number of important transport and infrastructure projects in the area. Farrans opened a new office in the city centre last year and we are in the final stages of the delivery of a 20-storey student accommodation project on Belgrave Street, Live Oasis St Alban’s Place. We will continue to engage closely with community groups, charities and schools to create local employment, training and apprenticeship opportunities to deliver a positive lasting impact while delivering Leeds Bradford Airport.” Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

Endpoint Cybersecurity Systems to Secure 210 Million Industrial Endpoints by 2028; Driven By Critical Infrastructure Threats

Endpoint Cybersecurity Systems to Secure 210 Million Industrial Endpoints by 2028; Driven By Critical Infrastructure Threats

A new study by Juniper Research, the foremost experts in technology markets, has found that there will be growth of 107% over the next five years in the number of industrial endpoints featuring cybersecurity protection.   The research identified the rise of interconnected processes within the Industry 4.0 revolution as increasingly exposing critical industrial infrastructure to external threats; requiring wholesale changes in how industrial stakeholders secure their operations.  Juniper Research defines an industrial endpoint as any physical or virtual device that is connected to a network in order to send and receive information in an industrial setting. Find out more about the new report, Global Industrial Endpoint Cybersecurity Market 2023-2028, or download a free sample. Rising Threats to Accelerate Industrial Endpoint Security Spend The research found that industrial endpoint cybersecurity spend will reach $7.8 billion by 2028; rising from $3.8 billion in 2023. This rapid growth of 105% demonstrates how quickly the market is evolving, and how industrial endpoint cybersecurity is rapidly becoming a priority for cybersecurity vendors.  Research co-author Nick Maynard commented: “As more processes become connectivity enabled, the threat environment within industrial settings is exponentially increasing. Cybersecurity vendors must partner with key industrial IoT vendors to better secure this problematic area.” Are Industrial Vendors Sufficiently Prepared for Evolving Threats? With the research forecasting 21% of industrial endpoints to be protected by endpoint cybersecurity services by 2028, this is ultimately a very low proportion of total industrial endpoints. As such, industrial stakeholders must move much faster to secure their critical operations, or they will face spiralling threats from nefarious actors. Boosting visibility in the industrial supply chain and optimising cloud security for critical operations will be vital to ensuring greater protection levels.  About the Research Suite     The new market research suite offers the most comprehensive assessment of the industrial endpoint cybersecurity market to date; providing analysis and forecasts of over 20,000 datapoints across 60 countries over five years. It includes a ‘Competitor Leaderboard’ and an examination of future market opportunities. Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

Does Your Business Need A Monument Sign?

Does Your Business Need A Monument Sign?

Almost every business owner understands the importance of having signage. Signs advertise your business and let consumers know the location of your store. Some signs can even let consumers know what type of products or services your business specializes in. While there are different types of signage, from small placards to gigantic billboards, some businesses benefit from monument signs.  But what are monument signs, and how do you know if your business needs one? Don’t Confuse Monument with Pylon Signs Monument and pylon signs are similar in use and appearance, as both are outdoor, weather-resistant architectural signs. However, pylon signs tend to be taller and are visible at greater distances, while monument signs are closer to the ground and are meant to be seen from parking lots and sidewalks. Depending on the position, monument signs can direct consumers to the business’s front doors.  Pylon signs also advertise businesses but often list all of the shops in the shopping plaza. They can also come with restrictions since their height can limit their placement, unlike monument signs that typically rest on the ground. On the other hand, power lines, tree limbs, and other obstacles aren’t an issue with monument signs. Benefits of Monument Signs Is your business hidden in a corner or any other type of hard-to-find location? Maybe you’re surrounded by competition and want to make your brand stand out.  A monument sign can capture the attention of passing pedestrians and motorists who may not have noticed your business. Since most monument signs, also known as monolith signs, are placed close to the business, it helps ensure you’re not passed by in favor of a competitor. Monolith signs are also extremely durable, as they’re carefully designed to be weather-resistant and last for years. This helps maximize your marketing budget since you’re not replacing the signage every few months or even years. The long-lasting sign also sends a positive message to consumers, indicating your business is established and planning on being around for the long term. Consumers typically prefer sticking with one brand instead of searching for a new one. Giving consumers the sense your brand is here to stay can help build and increase customer loyalty. Another way monument signs help to maximize your advertising budget is they never stop working. The signage advertises your location 24/7. In the long run, it’s typically cheaper to install a monolith sign than to pay for print advertising. Did you know you can have a monument sign that matches the building’s existing architecture to better blend in? You can have a monument sign constructed from the same material as the building, giving your business a consistent look from your door to the sign. Material Options So, what materials can you use to create a custom monolith sign? Your options are almost endless, with some ideas including the following: Sometimes, you want a more modern sign advertising your business—in this case, consider going with an aluminum or metal monolith sign. The material is also easy to shape and gives the sign a sleek and modern appearance. How to Use Monument Signs There are countless uses for monument signs besides simply directing consumers to your business. You can use the signage to display business information, promote your brand, or advertise sales, promotions, and other types of events. Some monument signs also incorporate LED lighting, expanding their potential for possible uses. With a digital monument sign, you can change the message as often as you wish. Advertise Your Business with a Monument Sign A monument sign is an effective way of ensuring your business stands out from the competition and helping you secure more customers.  With a wide variety of materials to choose from, including adding LED lights and other options, you can grab and keep consumers’ attention, which in turn often leads to an increase in sales and your overall brand awareness.
