Suspended prison sentence for unregistered gas fitter

A gas fitter from Walsall has received a suspended prison sentence after he fitted a hob at a house in Tamworth when not on the Gas Safe Register. Alan Nicholas Price’s work came to the attention of HSE after a registered fitter subsequently carried out repairs on the gas hob. Price, 57, from Pelsall, was charged with breaching Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations. He failed to appear in court on two separate occasions and was arrested. At Stafford Crown Court, he pleaded guilty and was given a nine-month prison sentence, suspended for two years. He was also ordered to complete 100 hours of community service and pay £100 towards HSE’s costs. Gas Safe Register maintains the register of businesses and operatives who are competent to undertake gas work. Under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations, for a gas engineering business or operative to legally undertake gas work within the scope of the regulations, they must be on the Gas Safe Register. Speaking after the hearing, HSE inspector Wayne Owen said: “When working on gas systems it is vital that the person has sufficient knowledge, training and experience so that they are aware of safe working practices and standards. This is due to the level of risk if gas systems are not worked on and fitted safely. The risk is posed not only to the person carrying out the work but to anyone else who may be in the vicinity of the systems afterwards; in this case the occupants of the house.” Notes to Editors The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is Britain’s national regulator for workplace health and safety. It aims to reduce work-related death, injury and ill health. It does so through research, information and advice, promoting training; new or revised regulations and codes of practice, and working with local authority partners by inspection, investigation and enforcement. www.hse.gov.uk More about the legislation referred to in this case can be found at:www.legislation.gov.uk HSE news releases are available at http://press.hse.gov.uk Journalists should approach HSE press office with any queries on regional press releases. Residential mortgage sales rocket to eight-year high

The latest analysis from Equifax Touchstone has revealed that during May, residential mortgage sales exceeded £13bn – soaring to an 8 year high. According to the data, the figures are up 4.4% (£0.5bn) on the previous month. Year-on-year sales also saw strong growth, rising by 18.4% (£2.0bn). Additionally, buy-to-let mortgage sales in May rose for the first time since February’s rush, indicating the market is settling following recent changes to stamp duty. Sales were up 3.9% from April; a total of £2.7bn. However, year-on-year figures were down by 20% (£0.7bn). Combined, residential and buy-to-let sales for the intermediated market totalled £6.4bn, up 4.3% from April. Every region in the UK reported growth; Northern Ireland led the way with an uplift of 14.3%, followed by Scotland (9.9%), the South Coast (6.5%) and Home Counties (5.7%). Iain Hill, Relationship Manager at Equifax Touchstone, said: “We are pleased to see the market has passed through the buy-to-let turmoil witnessed in the first quarter of the year and returned to steady growth. However, strong growth across both buy-to-let and residential sales has thrown June’s performance into sharp focus. Indicators are there that the current political environment and uncertainly could have a negative impact on sales. As the scale and longevity of this impact is still unclear, we will be closely watching the markets response to the outcome of the EU referendum.” Source link

Cloud Expo Europe and Data Centre World 2016, hosted at ExCel London 12-13 April, were back in full force yesterday to open Day One with over 15,000 visitors and huge support from a world-class speaker line-up and exhibitor community.   Joining the co-located events for 2016, Cloud Security Expo and Smart IoT London both proved their place alongside the industry heavyweights, with bustling aisles, impressive conference streams and a cutting-edge showcase of products and services from across the burgeoning markets. Day One highlights included an opening keynote address from UK Minister for Culture and the Digital Economy, Ed Vaizey, who argued the need to push for a ‘Gigabit Britain,’ inspiring businesses to embrace technological innovation and encouraging investment into research and development projects nationwide. The Navisite Cloud Keynote Theatre was also host to the first edition of organiser CloserStill’s Women in Technology Initiative, which saw a lively and inspiring panel of female leaders discuss their personal successes and the challenges faced during their illustrious careers. Panelist Alejandra Leon Moreno, IT architect and digital business at Inter IKEA Systems, shared her own experience of climbing from a 3D startup prize winner to an internationally renowned expert on digital transformation and enterprise architecture. The Oracle IoT Futures Forum theatre also featured a dynamic presentation delivered by R ‘Ray’ Wang, principal analyst and founder of Silicon Valley-based Constellation Research, which opened the debate around IoT as a business model shift – “Businesses must move from gut to data driven decisions,” he said. Wang argued for a future built on insight, where businesses no longer compete against each other but battle for user experience and outcomes. Speaking at the end of Day One, CloserStill managing director of technology, Thomas Standley, commented: “Yet another roaring start to Cloud Expo Europe and Data Centre World, and what a welcome for Cloud Security Expo and Smart IoT London! The events have seen enormous growth over the years and yet again we’re hearing hugely positive feedback from our exhibitors across all industry vectors.” Even after the first day, Standley was overwhelmed by the visitor numbers and vendor enthusiasm for 2017: “We’re significantly up on delegates this year, and exhibitors are very happy. Our stand sales are already ahead of this point last year. We’ve sold over half of the floorplan for 2017 after the first day alone, with many more expected to book tomorrow.” Particularly happy with the first day of business, Colin Bridges, senior director, North Europe at Cloud Innovator Sponsor, Mellanox Technologies said: “We’ve been really busy. We’ve been coming here for two years, and it’s a good opportunity to bring our products to a new client base. It’s a good show for raising awareness and getting our brand out there. Three quarters of the people we’ve seen are end users so it’s been a really good first day for us.” Soojin Choi, marketing director at Penta Security and silver sponsors of Cloud Security Expo added: “We’re here from South Korea and this is our first UK event. It’s been the perfect opportunity to expose our brand. We’ve had lots of people visit the stand who want to learn about us – it’s been very successful.” Data Centre World visitor Hiren Joshi, director at Alternatum IT, added: “I would definitely recommend this event to all my team and clients too. I will be bringing them all along next year! I have attended in previous years, and have been very impressed with this year’s show. Data Centre World is really on their game this year!” Delegate Samuel Sigbehm, director at CompTTEC, said: “This is my third year of attending. It’s a really excellent event. I attend many talks and seminars, but this is the best. The speakers are very knowledgeable and interesting. I’ll definitely be coming back in 2017.” For real-time updates follow: @CloudExpoEurope #CEE16 @DataCentreWorld #DCW16 @CSE_London #CSE16 @Smart_IoT #SmartIoT16 Source link

Unit International in $4.2bn Iran power deal

©Reuters More On this topic IN Energy Istanbul, June 4 — Turkish energy company Unit International has reached a $4.2bn deal with Iran’s energy ministry to build seven natural gas power plants there, in what it said was the biggest investment in Iran since the lifting of sanctions. The power stations, to be built in seven separate regions of Iran, Turkey’s eastern neighbour, would have a combined installed capacity of more than 6,000MW, the company said in a statement. The US, EU and UN lifted most sanctions on Iran in January under a deal with world powers whereby Tehran agreed to curbs on its nuclear programme. Turkish companies have seen the move as a major trade and investment opportunity, with the car, clothing, textiles, machinery and chemicals sectors also seen offering potential. “Unit International has reached a deal with the Iranian Energy Ministry worth some $4.2bn to build natural gas combined cycle power plants,” Unit said, adding the agreement was signed at a ceremony in Tehran on June 1. Unit International is owned by Unal Aysal, the former chairman of major Istanbul soccer club Galatasaray. Mr Aysal said that when completed the power plants would meet 10 % of Iran’s energy needs. Construction of the seven plants was planned to begin in the first quarter of 2017. Source link

SWC wins cleaning deal at landmark City building

13 June 2016 | Herpreet Kaur Grewal Specialist Window Cleaning (SWC) has been chosen to provide services at 41 Lothbury in the City of London, which is managed by property management company Cushman and Wakefield.   SWC – part of Incentive FM Group – will be responsible for cleaning all the external windows of the seven-floor serviced office building every other month, in addition to a six-monthly and annual deep clean.   Because the building retains its grade II listed traditional façade and many of its original features, SWC will be using a combination of window cleaning methods including the use of eye bolts to ensure that the small intricate windows are kept to a high standard of cleanliness.   This will be supplemented by a team using a small internal and external cradle. All work will be undertaken at weekends to ensure that there is no disruption to the operation of the building. Incentive FM acquired SWC in January, which it said would help the business self-deliver additional services. Source link
