Hartlepool College for Further Education Hold Event to Promote Women in Construction

A number of top companies from across the North East have come together in order to help advance the promotion of the construction industry to women. The companies got together for this recruitment drive at an event which took place at Hartlepool College of Further Education. The North East branch of the National Association of Women in Construction announced their continuing Professional Development event. Tis event saw 13 women from the construction industry invited to take part in a series of hands-on bricklaying and joinery challenges. The women invited to take part in this event ranged from students to Managing Directors. Research has shown that women only make up 12.8% of the construction workforce in the UK. Earlier in the year a survey was commissioned by the housebuilding company Keepmoat that illustrates only 13% of women aged between 16-25 would consider going into a career in construction. The organisations that attended this recruitment and promotion drive at Hartlepool College for Further Education included Construction Excellence North East, WSP Seymour Civil Engineering, Seymour Architects, Working Well together North East, Emerald Architects, Gateshead Housing Company and Lambert Smith Hampton. There were also six Construction and Built Environment students from Hartlepool College that assisted with the challenges held as part of the event. The Head of Construction at Hartlepool College for Further Education, John Cartwright hosted the event and has said that these occasions are an essential part of the work needed to inspire the next generation of learners as well as demonstrate to female students just how successful they can be and the opportunities on offer. There is a rich variety of roles and opportunities available in the construction industry and it is important that more women are encouraged to consider this industry as a career path. Events such as this one helps to dissolve misconceptions that the construction industry is a career path just for men.

Improvement Construction Work for A14 Makes Progress

Progress is continuing to take place with the construction work on the A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon improvement programme. This £1.5 billion improvement work has been taking place since November 2016. A year later it has been announced that the temporary bridge that has been erected over the A14 at Swansea will be taken down this week. This bridge has been an essential asset to the work carried out in this area as it has been used to carry 160,000 cubic meters of construction materials from the south to the north of the A14 over the course of the last 2 months. Highways England has commented on the construction work taking place to upgrade the road between Ellington and west of Huntingdon, which is the Milton junction on the Cambridge Northern Bypass. The use of the temporary bridge has helped the team working on the programme to carry out work and to prepare for the construction of the planned Swansea Interchange while trying to have a minimal impact on people’s journeys. The use of the temporary bridge has been just one of a number of different solutions that have been but in place in order to keep people moving on this route, and cause as little disruption as possible while the improvements are being made. The bridge will be taken down overnight and there are expected to be closures of the A14 when this takes place, on Monday 20th November, Tuesday 21st November and Saturday 25th November between junctions 24 and 31 from 9pm to 5am. The construction work on this road is expected to be completed by March 2021. The road has narrow lanes and a 40mph restricted speed limit in order to offer safe working conditions while the building work to improve the A14 is carried out while also ensuring that traffic is still able to make use of the roads.

Saira Hussain from Hussain Architectural Design Attends Commons Debate

The multi-award winning, female-led Hussain Architectural Design founder, Saira Hussain attended the House of Commons last week for a debate. covering a range of different topics, the debate was hosted by Virendra Sharma MP and was attended by a number of other MPs such as Baroness Verma, Caroline West, Keith Best and Paul Scully. Paul Scully The debate held in the Commons looked at a number of topics such as immigration, Brexit, the NHS, and Housing. Of course it was the focus on Housing that was of most interest to Saira Hussain. The founder of the multi-award winning Architectural and design company has said that more work needs to be done in order to overcome the housing challenges seen at the moment. It has been estimated that around 10,000 new homes would need to be built every year in the North West of England alone in order to keep in line with the growing population. This means that the Government need to be looking into intensive and widespread house building in order to meet the demand for housing that is leaving a lot of younger people stuck renting. Saira Hussain has said that she has spoken to a number of different people living in Lancashire and Manchester feel it is impossible to get onto the property ladder. At the moment the lack of housing stock is creating a demand, which is in turn driving up housing prices. On top of this, research has been carried out that shows that housing prices are set to increase by well over a quarter over the course of the next four years. This housing price increase is a reflection on the feeling that what the government is doing isn’t enough. The lack of sufficient action means that there will continue to be a shortage of homes, and therefore a demand that increases prices. There is also the question of where the new homes go. Most people suggest that building on brownfield is the solution, but this still doesn’t offer enough scope to meet the demand. Therefore, construction needs to go up, in the form of skyscrapers, or out, in to greenfield land when required.

Top Modern Home Decorating & Interior Design Trends

Interior design and decor changes seasonally throughout the years just like fashion. Today’s modern trends are definite proof of this – the interior of your home practically reflects the time in which we exists. Since we are always trying to make ourselves feel more comfortable and still keep up with trends, redecorating our home is a normal part of everyday life. Adding a pop of color or removing it, using oversized elements or simply accentuating a corner in the living room with a small seating chair – everything is available on the market and made even easier with online shops nowadays. Still, some trends seem to have been better accepted than others, and following are the ones that have definitely deserved the fame they recently achieved. Texture A major trend in today’s modern homes is the presence of all kinds of  texture. You could achieve this effect by simply adding some massive curtains and letting them hang in a way that makes them multidimensional. Any other decor items that can appear as multi-dimensional is just as likely to work. For those of you on a tighter budget can start off with an unusual picture frame. An easy trick that is not often used but can look fantastic is hanging your frame sideways so that the corners point towards the ceiling and floor. Obviously, when using this technique the picture must still be placed correctly and not be slanted as well.  Those with a decoration fund can spice things up with multiple light fixtures or even chandeliers. It doesn’t have to require the US Powerball lottery jackpot – its prizes will most likely get you on the real estate market rather than the flea market looking for crystals. Exotic Elements The tropical theme is  a never-ending source of inspiration, and even though they haven’t been present in every season, it is time to bring them back. You could take it slow and purchase a neutral-colored sofa with a few green and yellow pillows. On the other hand, you could just as well spice things up and get a chair or a small yet thick rug with a tiger or zebra pattern. Green In the spirit of social preservation, that is one of the most urgent matters of modern time, people are trying to make their homes green and eco-friendly. Keep a few green plants or create a rooftop garden, use up all the sun by installing windows to that whole part of the home, or just use cotton instead of synthetics when choosing fabric – these are little steps that will make quite a difference for your home décor and the environment. Sharp & Geometrical This trend reflects a completely different subject, that of gender equality. As women are becoming equally engaged in professional affairs as men, there is nothing to stop men from including themselves in home affairs. This gave birth to the more masculine design elements, distinguished for their sharpness and geometrical tendencies. Functionality is dominating as this trend will solely allow you to buy what you need, not what you want. Antiques As much as it is in the past, every great designer has ultimately claimed the rightful place antiques should take up in your living room. It represents an appreciation of historical values and excellent craftsmanship, creating an air of timelessness.
