Southwark Construction Skills Centre Moves to Canada Water

Southwark Construction Skills Centre Moves to Canada Water

Southwark Construction Skills Centre (SCSC) is moving from its original base at Elephant Park, to a new home at Canada Water. SCSC has been at the site in Elephant Park since 2016 and has been supported by major contractor Lendlease in providing training and upskilling to those interested in a career in construction. During this time, SCSC has contributed £40 million in social value to the local economy, training more than 10,000 residents, and helped to create more than 3,000 jobs in the construction sector. Now the community-centred skills and training centre, supported by Southwark Council and run by The Skills Centre, is set to move to its new home at Hawker House, Canada Water in April, in support of the British Land Canada Water Masterplan. “The aim was always to move the training facility to support additional projects in Southwark and this is the first move it has made since opening in 2016 – and we’re hugely excited about becoming a meaningful part of the community at Canada Water,” said Jon Howlin, Managing Director of The Skills Centre, which runs SCSC. “It has been an honour to work with the Elephant Park community and to help so many people learn new skills and train to gain great jobs in the construction industry – we’ve simply had the best experience. The Skills Centre now looks forward to doing the same again for the community at Canada Water.” SCSC will be offering the same opportunities at Canada Water as it did in Elephant Park, with employment prospects, apprenticeships and pre-employment training for local residents, as well as continuing its schools’ programme; inspiring Southwark school children to consider the varied jobs on offer through a career in construction. The move is a joint initiative between The Skills Centre, Southwark Council, British Land, and Art Invest. “Thousands of our residents have walked through the doors of Southwark Construction Skills Centre at Elephant Park to receive expert training and support, with many going on to secure real jobs at sites across the Borough,” commented Councillor Rebecca Lury, Southwark Council’s Cabinet Member for Finance, Business & Jobs. “With a 20-year programme of construction work at Canada Water, one of the Council’s largest regeneration schemes, this is an ideal location for creating an exciting training venue for our residents. I’m excited to see SCSC and The Skills Centre go from strength to strength, with the help of new partners British Land and Art-Invest to create opportunities for residents from across the Borough.” Canada Water Masterplan is a joint initiative between Southwark Council and British Land, working closely with Art-Invest, to develop a 53-acre scheme that will deliver workspace to accommodate around 20,000 jobs, retail, leisure, entertainment, education and community spaces. There will be around 3,000 new homes, of which 35% will be affordable, as well as 12 acres of open space and a new town centre for Southwark; the first new town centre built in London for more than 100 years.   Construction of the new centre in Canada Water will begin in April, with a planned opening on June 21st. Opening hours will be from 8.30am to 5pm Monday to Friday, with community-based activities planned for Saturdays. Local residents will also have access to a digital library, basic digital training as well as use of computer equipment, which will all be free. The centre will be run in a Covid-safe way, with Covid safety training also provided.

Airthings Launches Its Smart Indoor Air Monitor

Airthings Launches Its Smart Indoor Air Monitor

Airthings, makers of the best-selling indoor air quality and radon solutions for businesses and professionals, has launched its View Plus indoor air quality monitor, including the brand’s most advanced air quality technology to date. View Plus is a battery operated device which includes sensors for particulate matter (PM), radon, carbon dioxide (CO2) and much more, along with a customisable display for easy visualisation. For businesses, View Plus is the most comprehensive indoor air quality monitor to complement the Airthings for Business solution, helping create healthy, productive, and energy-efficient indoor spaces, whether it be a school, office or a restaurant. According to the World Health Organisation, 9 out of 10 people breathe unsafe air on a regular basis. The effects of allergens, pollution, wildfire smoke, radon and airborne viruses impact the health of people all over the world, yet these invisible enemies often lurk freely in our everyday environments without the ability to detect them. View Plus is here to change that and offer a level of control over the air that has never been possible before. By monitoring for PM, radon, CO2, humidity, airborne chemicals (VOC), temperature, air pressure, and even outdoor air quality, View Plus displays a comprehensive spectrum of insights and provides a glance into air quality in a way that is easy for anyone to understand. View Plus for Business also includes a light and noise sensor, as well as occupancy data and the Virus Risk Indicator. Invisible to the naked eye PM detection is a new addition to Airthings’ range of product capabilities and will provide a level of insight into air quality, both at home and at work. The term “particulate matter” describes microscopic particles in the air, which can include anything from dust and pollen to pollutants emitted from car exhaust, industrial activity, wood-burning stoves, smoke from wildfires, cooking, cigarette smoke, and pets, and more. While invisible to the naked eye, the impact of PM on our health can be colossal – it can irritate lungs, agitate pre-existing conditions such as asthma, and can even contribute to serious illnesses, such as heart attacks and coronary artery disease. The only way to combat PM in the air is to gain awareness of its presence and take informed action; which is where View Plus can help. The product features a built-in particle sensor that can detect PM2.5 and PM1, and provide users with continuous access to data, as well as notifications to alert about changes in the air. “Since the beginning of the pandemic, we’ve seen the levels of awareness about air quality increase dramatically,” said Oyvind Birkenes, CEO of Airthings. “We decided to develop View Plus to help people everywhere understand that they have more control over their air quality than they might think. Our mission at Airthings has always been to educate people and foster constructive conversation about how air quality can impact their health and daily lives. With View Plus, we can empower people and businesses to learn about the air quality in schools, offices, or even their favorite restaurants, in a way that is constructive and easy to understand.” Customisable to everyone’s needs With a sleek and minimalistic design interface that will fit seamlessly in any building, View Plus adapts to the surroundings, showing the most relevant data based on the location. It also allows for customisation options for users who want to prioritise the air quality data that matters most to them – whether it be PM, radon, CO2, humidity, or something else. Gaining an understanding of the air with View Plus is as easy as waving a hand in front of the device for a colour-coded air quality check. Users can log into the Airthings Dashboard for in-depth insights into the air or open the Airthings app for a quick and easy view of the air quality levels. The View Plus for Business is wireless and connects to the Airthings for Business solution over SmartLink using the Hub, allowing for a battery life of up to four years. View Plus can be placed in any school, office, restaurant, or other commercial buildings—making for a convenient way to transform indoor air quality from an invisible threat to a visible, understandable, and controllable aspect of life. Airthings for Business has been developed to allow businesses to monitor, visualise and control indoor air quality to ensure a safe and healthy environment for staff. This in turn improves general health, wellbeing and productivity of the workforce. Set up in a matter of minutes, the wireless monitors run on long-lasting batteries, making the solution easily scalable and customisable to any new or existing space.

CEMEX Invests to Phase Out Fossil Fuels at Plant

CEMEX Invests to Phase Out Fossil Fuels at Plant

CEMEX has announced that it is investing US$25 million in a new system to replace fossil fuels at its Rugby cement plant in the United Kingdom, as part of its “Future in Action” program to achieve carbon neutrality. The new system, which incorporates the use of green hydrogen in the production process, is expected to be fully operational in June 2021. Once completed, it will have the capability to operate at 100% with alternative fuels. This important investment is designed to reduce the site’s consumption of fossil fuels. CEMEX is one of the largest contributors to the circular economy and a leader in using alternative fuels with over 60% use across its European operations, significantly higher than the industry average. In the UK, CEMEX also obtains 100% of its electricity from renewable sources. The project, which is part of a US$100 million investment program in the UK that has contributed towards reducing CO2 emissions from European operations by 35% from 1990 levels, 10 years ahead of its global business target, is instrumental towards reaching its commitment of at least 55% CO2 reduction in European operations by 2030, in line with the European Commission´s aspiration for all its member states. “We believe that this very significant investment in this upgraded facility supports CEMEX’s position to minimise the use of fossil fuels for both environmental and economic reasons. It will enable the Rugby plant to consistently operate with up to 100% alternative fuels, which will contribute to our climate action targets,” said Sergio Menendez, President of CEMEX Europe, Middle East, Africa & Asia.

Band of Builders Charity and DEWALT Tools Support Tradespeople

Band of Builders and DEWALT Tools Support Tradespeople

National construction charity Band of Builders has teamed up with professional tools brand DEWALT in a partnership that will provide help and support to tradespeople impacted by illness, injury or financial crisis across the UK. Band of Builders (BoB) is a registered charity that aids members of the construction industry when times get tough through hands-on support, as well as providing help and advice through its extensive online community. The organisation was founded by tradesman Addam Smith in 2016 to assist his friend and fellow builder, Keith Ellick, after he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Addam recruited volunteers from around the country to ensure that the home renovations Keith had originally commenced were completed for his family. Since then, the charity has undertaken numerous projects throughout England, Scotland and Wales to support trade professionals facing adversity or hardship. “We’re excited to welcome DEWALT as a partner this year. Having the backing of a global brand in this way will undoubtedly strengthen our profile and drive awareness on a larger scale than ever before. Our aim is to reach as many construction workers across the country as possible and having DEWALT championing our cause will enable us to communicate our message to a significantly larger audience. Most importantly, it will also allow us to help a greater number of beneficiaries over the coming months and years,” said Gavin Crane, chair of the Board of Trustees at Band of Builders. “The pandemic has hampered many of our fundraising activities and projects over the last twelve months, with countless events postponed or cancelled. With DEWALT’s support, we will be able to resume work almost immediately, and our goal is to complete many more projects throughout 2021.” As part of the collaboration, DEWALT will supply tools and equipment for volunteers to use during construction or renovation projects, and the company will also engage in a programme of activities throughout the year to raise vital funds and drive awareness of the charity’s essential work. “We are passionate about supporting the professional trade community and are eager to start work with Band of Builders – a hugely inspiring charity that is run by tradespeople, for tradespeople. This partnership is an important opportunity for DEWALT to give back to individuals within the industry who have backed our brand for many years. Our teams are extremely keen to participate on a personal level, to boost awareness and fundraising efforts, and provide a helping hand to professionals through the toughest of times,” Chris Wayne, group marketing manager at DEWALT, added.

Affording a New Boiler

Purchasing and installing a new boiler is one of the biggest expenses that you can undertake as a homeowner. However, a majority of people prefer not to look into a boiler replacement because of the price of a new boiler.  But if your boiler is old and worn out, then getting a new one is a no-brainer. This means that you will have to put some money to the side for you to afford it.   Experts at iHeat confirm it. You can save more by making a simple decision today rather than postponing the inevitable. A new boiler will not only serve you better but will also allow you to enjoy your home even more. So, how can you afford a new boiler? Here’s how to do it: Put money aside If you feel like your boiler is getting to the end of its lifespan, it may be time to make some gradual savings. Do not ignore problems with your boiler until it’s broken down and dysfunctional.  If this happens then it will be impossible to get a new boiler, especially if you are on a tight budget at home. However, putting money aside now means that you can afford the boiler at the end of the year. Before setting your savings to the side, go on a research spree to find out the prices that you are looking at. Do not purchase the first boiler that you come across.  Take time to shop for boiler prices as well as suppliers. By doing it this way, you are bound to save a boiler that fits your needs and your budget. Go for boiler finance Boiler financing is just like financing a car or washing machine. It means that you can have your boiler installed without paying an upfront cost.  Unfortunately, a majority of people are unaware of this option and try to pay for a new boiler out of pocket. The good news is that there is an array of financing options to choose from. Take time in examining your options as well as the interest rates that are associated with the financing options.  By choosing boiler finance, you will make the most of a brand new boiler without having to fully pay for it right off the bat. When Should You Get a New Boiler? If your boiler is still functioning well, then there is no need to consider a new one. However, if you are constantly paying someone to come and carry out repairs then it could be a good time to invest in a boiler. Also, if your current boiler system is not giving you control over your heating systems (for example, your heater control can no longer be adjusted), a new boiler will improve your family’s comfort. Bottom Line If you are looking to buy a new boiler and replace your old one, the aforementioned tips will help you afford it. Do not forget to do your research as it will help you find the perfect boiler for you. Once you’ve carried out your due diligence and purchased the boiler of your choice, you can invest in a boiler cover that will come in handy whenever repairs are needed.

Hilltop Secures Investment from Metropolitan Real Estate

Hilltop Secures Investment from Metropolitan Real Estate

Hilltop Credit Partners, a UK-based specialist development funding partner, has secured investment from Metropolitan Real Estate, the global real estate multi-manager platform. As part of this, Hilltop will target to deploy up to £300 million over the next three years to finance the construction of over 1,000 new residential units across the UK, with a focus on affordable regional markets with strong supply-demand fundamentals. The investment provides Hilltop with an immediate opportunity to grow its existing UK residential development finance platform. An investment of this type is critical to achieving the UK government’s target of delivering 300,000 new homes per year. “I’m delighted to announce this partnership, which further establishes Hilltop as a leading player in the UK development lending market. Working with Metropolitan Real Estate will bring together our collective experience in real estate and credit to support proven housebuilders in the UK, and to promote greater housing supply. This partnership is a validation and recognition of our work so far, and we look forward to growing our lending portfolio across Britain this year,” said Paul Oberschneider, Founder and CEO of Hilltop Credit Partners. Hilltop believes that UK residential development lending has fallen up to 40% since 2008, as high-street banks have withdrawn from the market due to new regulatory capital requirements and the impact of Covid-19. The UK could therefore face a funding gap of c. £200 billion that will need to be covered over the next decade in order to achieve the government’s housebuilding targets. Hilltop is backed by global real estate investment firm, Round Hill Capital, and the firms’ combined expertise, industry knowledge and access to capital has facilitated the construction of 250 residential units across the UK to date. The partnership with Metropolitan brings further institutional validation of Hilltop’s strategy and track record. Metropolitan committed c. £60 million in 2021 to purchase a portfolio of existing development loans across five regions and to continue funding the active pipeline. This commitment also demonstrates the strong appetite among institutional investors for the attractive risk-adjusted returns offered by residential real estate credit strategies. Despite the challenging economic backdrop in 2020, UK residential property prices rose at their fastest rate in six years, as strong pent-up demand coincided with a slowdown in the supply of new housing, with more affordable regions outside of London showing the strongest performance.

Women in Construction: A Spotlight on Charlotte Goode at Keepmoat Homes

Women in Construction: A Spotlight on Charlotte Goode at Keepmoat Homes

Often stereotyped as an all-male industry, getting ahead in the construction industry was something Charlotte Goode, Regional Managing Director at Keepmoat Homes aspired to achieve. Having started her career in accounting, she soon realised the building industry opened many doors for her and since joining Keepmoat Homes in 2016, she was able to achieve her goal of Managing Director within two years. Here she shares how her passion for numbers was the perfect foundation for a fulfilling career within the construction sector. Charlotte commented: “I must admit, a career in construction was not the most obvious choice when I initially started my career. Having qualified as an accountant with Deloitte, I was first introduced into the construction industry during my 10 years with SIG plc, a specialist distributor of building materials. Whilst maintaining the position of Head of Due Diligence, I was transferred into the Corporate Development department to lead a team of financial and commercial specialists and oversee a number of acquisition projects. It was through heading up the integration of an offsite manufacturer recently acquired that I realised I wanted to pursue a career in construction. With the construction industry slowly becoming more diverse over the years, in particular in managerial roles, Charlotte added: “I joined Keepmoat Homes as a Finance Director with a personal aim of becoming Regional Managing Director within five years. After a lot of hard work, late nights and dedication, I was offered the role within two years. As Regional Managing Director for the West Midlands I find every day brings such a variety of work and challenges – whether it be driving land acquisitions, building relationships with our partners, managing operational issues out on site, developing the team or liaising with customers. For me, being operationally minded, continually changing and adapting to new challenges and developing a great team around myself, has helped progress my career quickly – being good with numbers is of course an added bonus.” During Charlotte’s time with Keepmoat Homes, she has established the West Midlands region and grown the area including from last September, managing the South West geography. The region currently has 9 sites in development across the West Midlands and South West, with a further 7 sites due to commence development within the next few months. With an aim to open more doors to women at Keepmoat Homes, Charlotte added: “There is no doubt we need to encourage more women to select and remain in construction careers. “Many doors are already open to women, there are so many different areas that all contribute towards the project from conception to delivery including site management, quantity surveying and marketing, and all these roles play a key part. If you’re starting out, an apprenticeship is a great option as it enables you to gain first-hand experience, whilst also an insight into other areas of the business. “My advice to young women who are interested in the industry would be that you have to be flexible in your role and take up opportunities as and when they arrive, even if it’s not exactly the path you originally planned to take. “With the industry starting to bring in flexible / agile working, I feel this is key for attracting more women into the industry – from working from home to job sharing, there’s now a variety of ways we’ve been able to incorporate flexible working into our region at Keepmoat Homes to attract and retain female talent. As a mother to two young girls, who both swim competitively, the flexibility at Keepmoat Homes has allowed me to support my girls driving them to galas and meets, and more recently becoming a committee member at their swimming club. “It’s about finding the perfect balance and I’m an advocate that if you put your mind to it, along with the added work, you can achieve anything.” Andy Mason, Divisional Chairman at Keepmoat Homes, said: “We have achieved great things in the West Midlands over the last four years. It’s great that Charlotte, who has helped set up the region and has excelled in her previous roles, is being recognised for her achievements. “At Keepmoat Homes, our vision goes far beyond bricks and mortar and we aim to be at the forefront of the industry and transform lives, not only with new neighbourhoods and supporting the local community which we serve, but for our employees as well. Charlotte is an inspiration to other women, and it clearly demonstrates the important role women play in the construction sector. I hope this inspires future generations to consider this industry for their careers.”
