Amey To Develop Pioneering AR App

Amey To Develop Pioneering AR App

Amey has joined forces with a specialist supplier in the augmented reality field to develop a new app to address ‘unflushables’ in the sewer network. The firm will utilise ClicksandLinks technology to show householders right before their eyes how flushing the wrong items would block their drains and sewers. The app allows sewer operatives to ‘overlay’ a typical sewer network on a customer’s property or surrounding area on their Android mobile phone. The app then runs animations which mock-up how ‘unflushable blockages’ are formed in real time. It will be piloted across the Severn Trent contract, which serves 4 million properties and 8 million customers across the area. Currently, blockages are the most frequent waste issue reported to all water companies, with around 70% of sewer blockages on the network caused by unflushables, such as fats, oils, grease, wet wipes etc. Amey is hoping that the app will be an effective way to increase customer understanding about the impact unflushables have on the water network, and help to prevent future blockages. Speaking about the app, Ben Hawkins from Amey’s innovation team, said: “The UK water industry spends about £90m a year clearing sewer blockages. Many of these are caused by putting unflushables down the drain. This app is the first of its kind and demonstrates Amey’s commitment to using new technology, in increasingly tech-reliant times, to help our customers visualise and solve these issues.” The app will be launched in 2020.

Tony Butler, route asset manager for earthworks at Network Rail, said: “This vital upgrade as part of the Great North Rail Project will keep important Northern passenger services running safe and reliably on this section of the Furness line. “The first phase involves making the embankment shallower and the second involves keeping the track in place. The work has been designed to put passengers first as it will be carried out without closing the railway.” Phase one of the work to stabilise the embankment will last until the end of the month. Phase two begins on 02 February and will last until March, with work taking place overnight at weekends while trains aren’t running.

This represents an impressive 106% increase on 2017 and the previous two years where turnover averaged at £36 million. Much of its recent success has been attributed to the growth of the North West operation which opened in 2014. Throughout 2018/19 Triton has continued work on the ongoing Premier Inn hotels extensions framework and developer led Premier Inn new build hotels such as the new 85 bed hotel in Skegness. The company has also recently handed over a 66,000 sq ft commercial development over three units for J Pullan Developments in Leeds, a 60,000 sq ft flagship Big Yellow storage facility in Manchester and the new Kirkhamgate Primary School in Wakefield. Eutopia Homes Venture Launched

Eutopia Homes Venture Launched

A new housing development called Eutopia Homes has been launched by Scott Hammond, one of the co-founders of Essential Living, the UK’s first build-to-rent developer and operator. The new venture has been launched with £365m development pipeline containing homes for sale and rent in key regional cities. Hammond, managing director of Essential Living between 2012 and 2017, has acquired sites in Greater Manchester, Exeter and Birmingham for his Eutopia Homes brand. The firm’s strategy is to focus on delivering mid-market homes across a range of tenures close to transport hubs. Eutopia Homes’ latest project is a £105m scheme in Salford that will deliver 500 homes offering a mix of build-to-rent and market-sale apartments spread across two adjacent plots in the inner-city Ordsall area with waterside views. This area is currently seeing a boom in development, with 1,250 residential units in planning. Eutopia’s 2.8 acre site rests on the banks of the River Irwell, a short distance east of MediaCityUK, and will appeal to young professionals working there or who have recently graduated from Manchester’s four major universities. Eutopia’s £130m Exeter site will deliver 104 houses and 66 apartments for sale, 230 build-to-rent homes and a 65-bed retirement community across 15 acres of land acquired from Network Rail. Subject to planning in the new year, start on-site is expected Q3 2020. In Digbeth, Birmingham, Eutopia has submitted plans for £130m mixed-use scheme featuring a 167-bed hotel, affordable workspace and 480 homes on a four-acre site acquired from Mucklow plc. The site is occupied by engineering firm Sulzer, who are moving to a new purpose-built facility in Q2 2020. Darling Associates are the architects across all three projects. Scott Hammond, founder and CEO at Eutopia Homes, said: “UK regional cities are attracting swathes of investment, thanks to rising student retention rates, improving culture and leisure scenes and new employment opportunities driven by major corporates moving operations outside of London. By creating mixed-tenure developments, we can help create genuine communities, accelerate delivery and de-risk development while meeting a range of housing needs.” Tomas Pierce, Director from Darling Associates said: “We are delighted to be working with Scott on an exciting new brand that promises to raise the bar for housing across the regions. Having recently expanded into Manchester, we have an extremely strong presence across the north-west, and are able to commit some amazing local talent to many of the exciting regeneration schemes that are now spreading out around the country. “Considerable investment is continuing to flow into build to rent, and the improving regional economy is supporting the housing for sale market across Manchester. Eutopia’s exciting blend of tenures and its focus on high quality design for the mid market is the right product for the right time.”

Caddick Completes Work on New C4 HQ

Major refurbishment works on Channel 4’s new Leeds-based media hub has been completed by the Caddick Group. Caddick Group, a family-run property development and construction business, has finished transforming an old six-acre printworks in central Leeds into a creative complex just 15 minutes from the Majestic, where Channel 4 will be opening its new headquarters. Acquired by Caddick Group in October 2017, the site will now host 110,000 sq. ft. of studio space after extensive refurbishment, including the demolition of the Petty House office building and removal of abandoned plant machinery and asbestos. New landscaping and access points have been provided, along with charging points for electric vehicles. Local contractor CBM Construction carried out the refurbishment. The history of the former printworks spans almost 150 years, starting in 1865 when Petty & Sons family printing company first opened its doors. In 1981 it was acquired by Robert Maxwell, who used it for his British Printing and Communications Corporation. The site subsequently changed hands a number of times before finally shutting for good in December 2014 with the loss of 250 jobs. A fire which broke out on 07 October 2016 destroyed the old Bindery building and the site was then abandoned. Caddick has already secured Opera North as a tenant for a 9,000 sq ft. unit on the six-acre site which is being using for storage and rehearsals. The remaining space will be occupied by studio operator Leeds Studios, who are subletting the property from Leeds City Council after a landmark deal with Caddick Group that saw the local authority take the head lease. Leeds Studios will now undertake internal fitouts of the six units they occupy, with the facility due to open in May 2020. Leeds’ media scene is booming, and the city is the UK’s fastest growing, with the largest professional and financial services cluster outside of London and now an emerging creative cluster following Channel 4’s decision to relocate to the city. Completion of refurbishment works at the Polestar Petty site follows the start on-site at New York Square. The official ground-breaking ceremony took place in the nearby Leeds Playhouse earlier this month and involved live performances from local artists and musicians. Offering 515 apartments designed and built exclusively for rent, New York Square is the largest city centre residential project to begin construction in Leeds this year and will be developed and managed by Moda Living, Caddick Group’s rental housing brand. Sister company Caddick Construction is the main contractor. The 515 homes mark the first phase of Caddick Groups’ SOYO neighbourhood, a £300m mixed-use development, in Leeds city centre right next to Leeds Playhouse, Northern Ballet, Leeds College of Music and BBC studios. In addition to the Moda Living apartments, SOYO will provide further residential, a hotel, restaurants, bars as well as new high-quality public realm and green space that will host outdoor activities throughout the year. Caddick Group has a £5bn development pipeline spanning residential, industrial/logistics and mixed-use city centre regeneration projects. Johnny Caddick, director at Caddick Group, said: “There is huge demand for studio space across the UK and in Leeds particularly thanks to the arrival of Channel 4. The broadcaster’s move will prove a massive boost to the city’s economy and Caddick Group is proud to be part of that growth story by transforming a derelict site into a world-class film and TV complex.” Tony Bashforth from CBM Construction, said: “The refurbishment of the former Polestar Petty works has received a lot of interest locally, due to the connections many in Leeds have to the site. Our works have helped transform the old warehouses into a modern workspace for the 21st century, including new electric car charging points and upgraded services to power the studios. It’s great to have been involved in this project bringing the space back into employment use.” Dawn Carlisle, partner in the commercial property team at Shulmans LLP, who represented Caddick Group on the granting of the lease, said: “We have a long-standing relationship with Caddick Group and, as two Leeds-based organisations, it has been a pleasure to have played a role in this significant cultural project, Channel 4 in Leeds, which will help to bring wider economic benefits to the region in 2020 and beyond.”

It will benefit the residents of The Mannings and the wider community.
