Association for Project Management Registers 1000th Individual

Association for Project Management (APM), the chartered body for the project profession, has added the 1000th Chartered Project Professional (ChPP) to its register. Having received its Royal Charter in 2017, APM has led the way in setting and maintaining universally high standards for the project profession. The ChPP benchmark – the internationally recognised benchmark standard for the profession – enables those who meet the required chartered standard to demonstrate a defined level of technical knowledge, professional practice and ethical behaviour. Applicants who achieve APM’s chartered status are included on the Register of Chartered Project Professionals. People from a wide range of industries have succeeded in becoming a ChPP including engineering, defence, finance, healthcare, construction, transport and manufacturing. Recognition of the importance and value of the chartered standard is growing among these sectors and others. Debbie Dore, chief executive at APM, said: “This is a significant milestone for APM and the profession. We are seeing a growing interest in chartership from both individuals and employers as they realise the benefit and value it can bring – both to people’s careers and to businesses. With the project profession adding £156bn* to the UK economy annually, having more chartered professionals will only bring further value.” The youngest ChPP so far is Craig Scott, aged 26, a project manager at Eurofighter GmbH, who started with BAE Systems as a business apprentice straight from school.  Craig said: “It’s fantastic to be recognised as the youngest person ever to become Chartered. I have worked extremely hard over the past four-and-a-half years ensuring that I have a full rounded level of experience within the profession by undertaking different roles, from customer-facing and supplier based roles to delivering all aspects of the project lifecycle from bids through to contract execution and closure.     My advice for anyone looking to become chartered is to ensure you have broad experience, keep track of everything that you have done, and keep a note of it. You will realise you have done more than you think, and it’s quite refreshing to see what you have achieved!” Sue Phillips, a programme manager for HM Revenue & Customs, believes that becoming a ChPP has given her greater confidence in her professional skills and has had a positive impact on her career. Sue said: “Achieving chartered status has given me greater confidence in my own professional skills. It is recognised by colleagues and stakeholders as a premier award. My professionalism is recognised and accepted without question. I have recently moved to a new programme leadership role and being a ChPP has helped me establish strong professional relationships quickly.”

Construction Company Adopts Fingerprinting Drug Test

Construction Company Adopts Fingerprinting Drug Test

Part of the Wilco Group, the largest civil and landscape development group in Western Canada, has adopted the Intelligent Fingerprinting Drug Test to use in its recruitment process. The HR team at Wilco Contractors Southwest Inc’s headquarters in Calgary is using the fingerprint-based drug screening system, that works by collecting and analysing tiny traces of sweat from a fingerprint to detect drugs, to assess fitness for works in the construction sector. The rapid, non-invasive fingerprint method replaces a traditional off-site urine test approach. Together with operational and efficiency savings resulting from Intelligent Fingerprinting’s 10-minute test, the switch to the fingerprint method is set to save Wilco Southwest $20-25,000 CAD annually. As part of Wilco Southwest’s commitment to workforce health and safety, all new employees who are set to operate construction heavy plant vehicles, truck operators or labourers who are working in these environments are required to take a drug test as part of their interview process. Previously, candidates were asked to visit a third party off-site location within 48 hours of the interview to provide a urine sample. Dan Maat, Vice President of Wilco Contractors Southwest Inc said: “We recruit up to 500 new employees annually who work in quite high risk environments, so we want to ensure from the outset that our employees are safe and fit to work. As part of this, we routinely drug test as part of our recruitment process. We were attracted to the fingerprint method as we can now test in-house, and gain access to results within minutes during the interview process. We’ve also found that interviewees are much happier to provide a fingerprint sweat sample compared to our previous intrusive urine test approach. From a process and operational perspective, we have also projected that the adoption of fingerprint drug testing is set to save us between $20-25,000 CAD in the first year alone. “This saving is not only due to the cost-effectiveness of the fingerprint method, but also thanks to savings from optimising our recruitment process and increasing the percentage of candidates offered a position who accept our employment. Previously we found that we lost candidates and money due to the urine test taking 24-48 hours post-interview. We were having to pay for many booked appointments where the candidate failed to turn up – either where the candidate was put off by the urine test or, in that one to two day period, they were offered alternative positions. Our HR manager is now managing the drug tests himself during the interview process – eliminating the need for an external party and enabling job offers to be made there and then,” added Dan Maat. Intelligent Fingerprinting’s Dr Paul Yates added: “Drug testing clearly has a valuable role to play in recruitment, particularly as tackling drug misuse is so important in maintaining a safe workplace. Because fingerprint drug testing is quick and easy to use – unlike traditional urine or saliva-based tests that can be invasive, time-consuming and undignified for both testers and employees alike – our approach is certainly attracting attention from construction businesses – both in North America with Wilco and in Europe with organisations such as Alandale Group.  And because our portable drug screening system supports all forms of employee drug testing – from pre-employment screens and random drug tests to post-accident investigations – construction firms are finding that fingerprint-based drug tests provide a cost-effective and practical way of supporting their health and safety initiatives and enabling drug misuse policies.” Fingerprint-based drug testing – how it worksIntelligent Fingerprinting’s drug testing solution features a small, tamper-evident drug screening cartridge onto which ten fingerprint sweat samples are collected, in a process which takes less than a minute. The Intelligent Fingerprinting portable analysis unit then reads the cartridge and provides a positive or negative result on-screen for all drugs in the test in ten minutes.

STEM Campus Moves Forward In West Suffolk

STEM Campus Moves Forward In West Suffolk

A new £8 million Campus for Science Technology Engineering and Maths (STEM) Innovation has opened its doors to students in West Suffolk. The West Suffolk College development has reached completion in Phase 1, comprising a 4,300 sqm teaching facility with two seminar rooms, 10 classrooms, six laboratories, learning hubs, social spaces and a business centre. This marks the first of a multi-phased campus redevelopment programme which will bring state-of-the-art, specialist STEM facilities to the region. Contractor Coulson Building Group worked with landscape architect Wynne-Williams Associates and consultancy Pick Everard to bring the project to life. Speaking about the project, Pick Everard director Keith Prendergast said: “This first phase has significantly modernised the college’s offering. Our designs have enabled further and higher education teaching services to take place under one roof, alongside a space for local businesses. This creates greater links with industry, addressing the skills gap in STEM and creating an opportunity for real collaboration. “The campus is on the site of a former specialist engineering facility, where high-end equipment for TV and media was developed. It’s great that we’re helping to continue this story, creating a space that will train the next generation of engineers. “The space has now been completely refurbished, enhancing its exterior appearance and significantly improving the internal specification. “The site will eventually house 350 students and has also been designed to accommodate space for businesses linked to the educational offer. We’re incredibly proud to have been involved and look forward to seeing the rest of the campus develop.” The completion of the £3.4 million facility in phase one has meant that West Suffolk College can consolidate its computing and engineering departments, bringing them together under one roof. Gary Jefferson, executive director engineering and technology at West Suffolk College added: “The transformation of the Vitec factory is nothing less than remarkable. We have taken a 1960’s factory and, in phase one, we have created a state-of-the-art computer science and engineering facility which will train the creators, programmers and innovators of tomorrow from GCSE level through to degrees. “We now have an ultra-modern teaching accommodation for nearly 400 students, covering digital technologies and engineering disciplines and are already approaching our capacity. The philosophy of the design is helping the cross-disciplinary project work that our students are completing with businesses. By creating spaces for students to circulate and collaborate on projects in a flexible environment, we can future proof them for success in their careers ahead. “At this phase, we have still only developed approximately one third of the site and have amazing plans to develop the remaining two thirds. We’re set to expand our site by creating labs for agritech, physics, chemistry, biology, big data, artificial intelligence and fully immersive augmented and virtual reality technologies.”

Signs You're Ready To Sell Your Home

Signs You’re Ready To Sell Your Home

Regardless of the size and price, buying a house is an expensive investment. Your financial health will be affected before, during, and after you make this purchase. For individuals who have limited budgets, they’ll likely have to save a lot of money and change their spending habits just to afford to buy a house. You might even think to sell my mobile home to earn money for a new house. Paying for a house is one of the most expensive investments you’ll make in your life, but this doesn’t mean that you should live or keep it forever. There are situations in life when selling your home to a we-buy-houses company such as Element Homebuyers can provide more benefits than actually holding on to this investment long-term.   To help you decide whether or not it’s time to sell your home, look for the following signs: 1. Your Family Is Growing As the number of your family increases, expect that everyone in the household will have different needs. The house that perfectly provides comfort and safety to you and your partner might not have the same efficacy when you welcome new members in the family. How can you let your kids play if your home isn’t spacious enough for a play area? Can you guarantee your kids’ safety in your current house? If your home has bedrooms enough for you and your kids, how can you accommodate a guest? If you notice that your house is too cramped to accommodate all the members of your family, consider selling your house to a we-buy-houses company such as Fair Cash Deal. A growing family is one of the most obvious signs that you’re ready to sell your house. Although convenient and cheap, choosing to live in a house that no longer fits the size and lifestyle of your family can result in inconvenience and stress. Choosing to live in a small house if you already have kids can even impair their development and growth. 2. You Have Savings Selling your home is a great way to earn money. Since the value of real estate investments will increase over time, selling your home allows you to earn bigger money from the amount you spent in buying it. Selling a home can be financially rewarding, but don’t expect that you’ll incur zero costs during the process. Contrary to popular belief, selling your home isn’t cheap. In order to haul in buyers fast and sell your home at the best price, you’ll have to: Hire the services of a real estate agent to help you properly hold open houses. You need their professional services to know what you should and shouldn’t to ensure that your open houses will be successful. Pet owners will also have to board their pets, so potential buyers aren’t disturbed by frequent barking or purring. Pets are adorable, but not everyone likes the idea of having a furry friend in their properties. Think about homeowners who have sensitive skin or allergies. Since you’ll have to move out the moment you decide your home, you’ll also have to pay for movers and the down payment of your new house. Expect to pay bigger moving expenses if you’re relocating to another country. If you’re confident that you can pay for all of these costs, go ahead and sell your home. Having enough savings is vital for you to successfully sell your home and transition to a new neighborhood. Moving is already stressful, and not having enough money can make the entire move more taxing. 3. You’re Ready To Cut Emotional Ties It’s common for homeowners to become emotionally attached to their homes. Aside from the money that you’ll have to shell out when buying a home, you’ll also be living in this space for years. You’ll have memories with your friends and family in different areas of the home, which is why selling the house and letting go of these memories can be tough.   But if you’re ready to cut emotional ties with your home, choosing to sell it might be an easy decision to make for you. Once you’re emotionally prepared to sell your home, removing your family photos from your living area, or putting your favorite seating furniture in the storage area won’t be a heartbreaking experience. Instead of being unhappy with the changes made to your home, you’ll likely see these as opportunities to sell your home fast and earn the most profit from it. Decide How To Sell Once you’ve ticked any signs in this article, decide how you’re going to sell your home. Are you going to do it through a we-buy-houses company? Or are you planning to dramatically reduce your selling price? Scheduling open houses and renovating certain areas of your house can also help when you’re selling your house. However, to ensure that you’re going to sell your home fast, compare all of your available options and choose one that suits your schedule, and financial goals.

Working Space Arriving to Manchester

Working Space Arriving to Manchester

ISG is set to continue its successful working partnership with Manchester City Council after securing a further two projects. The firm has signed on to transform an outdated 1970s office block in Hulme into a modern working space for council staff. Another scheme will also see ISG improve a well-used public car park for customers of the Council. The £10.2 million transformation at Alexandra House on Southcombe Walk will see the complete strip out of the old office block creating new working areas, improving the energy efficiency, reducing the carbon footprint of the building and replacing the windows. The eight floors will boast open plan working spaces, breakout areas and two new lifts, plus a brand-new entrance on Moss Lane East with the project set to complete by December 2020. Repairs will then be delivered to the two-storey car park, to control the ingress of water, and the lift will be replaced to enable better access and use by council staff and visitors to the leisure centre situated above the car park. Improved lighting and security will also be provided. These works are the latest rocured through the North West Construction Hub’s medium value framework for Manchester City Council, a partnership that has seen ISG deliver projects across various sectors throughout the North West over the last 10 years. ISG Framework director Neil Walker said: “Our work with the North West Construction Hub and Manchester City Council has seen us deliver stand out, award winning projects and we’re delighted to now be on site at Alexandra House transforming the working space of some of Manchester City Council’s staff. By also improving the car park we’re able to have a wider impact in the ongoing regeneration of Hulme High Street. “Not only that but our commitment to making a real difference to those who live and work in the surrounding area is clear – we’re working with people at every step of the project to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to have a say and that we’re sharing our expertise with people in the area through placements and job opportunities. We’re also supporting Manchester City Council in their work since announcing a climate emergency by continuing to improve the energy efficiency of the council estate and lowering their carbon footprint. All of this helps us leave a lasting legacy long after we’ve completed the project.” ISG secured the new contracts after success refurbishing Hulme District Office earlier this year and the library and leisure centre in 2018.

HMS Victory Gallery Contract Awarded

HMS Victory Gallery Contract Awarded

Marcon and hsd have struck a deal to deliver a new £1.1 million HMS Victory gallery at The National Museum of the Royal Navy in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. The companies will design and build the new facility, which will see the Sir Donald Gosling Victory Gallery redeveloped to tell the story of the oldest commissioned warship in the world – HMS Victory. The National Museum of the Royal Navy and HMS Victory Preservation Company will work closely with the contractors, using the new facility to complement the HMS Victory on-board experience which focuses on the Battle of Trafalgar. After an initial design period the fit-out of the museum will begin in January 2020. Designed to reveal the physical and cultural aspects of Victory’s story from ‘acorn to icon’, the gallery charts significant events from the laying of her keel to the huge ongoing conservation effort to preserve the nation’s flagship. Marcon Fit-Out will carry out the fit-out of the museum space, manufacturing the specialist joinery to ensure the highest standard of finish is achieved. Martin McErlean, Heritage Contracts Manager, Marcon commented: “This project is another landmark scheme for Marcon’s heritage team. We are excited to be working with hsd on the design and build of the Sir Donald Gosling Gallery. HMS Victory is a world-famous tourist attraction and to play a role in showcasing the history of the ship to future generations will be very rewarding.” Lindsay McGuirk from hsd commented: “The fascinating story of conservation is not just a present-day one, for many years people have battled to Save Victory! With modern day techniques in conservation bringing together science, technology, engineering and art and craftsmanship, visitors can understand and appreciate her historical value, but also see the passion and pride in the team that make it their mission to protect her.” Andrew Baines, Deputy Director of Heritage, The National Museum of the Royal Navy added: “HMS Victory is the jewel in the crown of Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. Visitors are already familiar with the dramatic story of the ship’s role at the Battle of Trafalgar. In the new gallery we will be sharing the unknown stories of her 260-year story, bringing to the fore extraordinary but little-known episodes such as bomb-damage in the Second World War, the ship’s near loss in a ramming accident in 1903, and her development from a weapon of war to a national icon. At the heart of the new gallery will be an immersive AV experience unlike anything else on site. We are extremely excited to be working with Marcon and hsd on this project and look forward to welcoming visitors to the new gallery which opens Easter 2020.”

Profile 22 Optima Windows Used in Retirement Housing

Profile 22 Optima Windows Used in Retirement Housing

Profile 22 Optima windows were specified in the development of 26 one and two bedroom apartments in a retirement development in Upper Norwood, London. Lewis House is a development of 26 one and two bedroom retirement apartments in Upper Norwood in London from McCarthy & Stone, the UK’s leading retirement housebuilder. As in all McCarthy & Stone developments, high quality was a top priority – it is the only housebuilder of any size to have been awarded the five-star rating for customer satisfaction by the Home Builders Federation every year since the awards began. When it came to the 97 windows and 26 door and sidelight combinations required on the project, McCarthy & Stone approached Epwin Window Systems. The systems house recommended the Optima system from Profile 22 and put the developer in touch with local Profile 22 Approved Window Installer Newview Homes Ltd. The company is one of the largest installation companies in the South East and is the one of the few UK installation companies to hold both ISO 9001 for Quality Management and ISO 14001 for Environmental Management. Profile 22 Optima Chamfered Windows deliver specifications required. The window specification required a U value of 1.4 wm2/k on all windows and Secured by Design accreditation on ground floor and easily accessible first floor windows. Acoustic glazing was also required because Lewis House is situated on a busy road so traffic noise needed to be minimised. Visually, the local authority had requested a grey exterior to give a modern appearance and provide a close match to aluminium. Newview used Profile 22’s Optima 70mm casement windows in smooth slate grey on white with 28mm Low E sealed glass units. Secured by Design accredited windows were fitted where required. Michele Wietscher, Commercial and Finance Director at Newview, said: “The Optima profile is always well-received because of its ability to meet demanding requirements at a competitive price.” The windows were manufactured by Newview’s long term fabrication partner, Emplas Window Systems Ltd, one of the UK’s largest window and door fabricators. Michelle said: “We work with Emplas because they are consistently reliable and offer excellent quality and good customer service.” Newview is an experienced commercial installer used to working on new build developments so was well-placed to ensure installation ran smoothly and coordinated with all other trades on site. It was the first time the company had worked with McCarthy & Stone and Michele said the team appreciated the developer’s meticulous approach. “McCarthy & Stone are well organised on site and their efficiency helped us be more productive. The installation process went well.” Everyone involved is delighted with the finished result. Senjey Sehmi, Senior Technical Manager South East, McCarthy & Stone Retirement Lifestyles, said: “We are very happy with the appearance of the windows, as they give a clean and contemporary look, which is in keeping with the architectural style of the building.” The quality of the Optima profile and Newview’s standard of workmanship have also been well received. Michele commented: “It was the perfect little contract for our first time working with McCarthy & Stone. We have priced two other sites in the South East now and hope to be working with them again soon.”
