FMB Call for Major Reforms of CITB

The Construction Industry Training Board, or CITB have been given their last chance by the Federation of Master Builders, or FMB. Members of the FMB are divided in regards to their opinions on the future of the CITB. Some members would like to see the training board continue, while others feel that the organisation should be completely scrapped. Despite the split decision about the training organisation’s future, it has been agreed upon by members of the Federation that the CITB does not work for smaller firms operating in the construction industry. The call has been made by the FMB for the CITB to carry out significant reforms in order to deliver quality training on a large scale in the smaller firms of the construction industry. The FMB has made the decision to support the continuation of the levy. However, they have explicitly stated that this continuation of support is not an agreement with the status quo, and feel that the CITB is broken, and support is needed from the industry in order to make sure that in the future the levy works for everyone. It is thought that unless the changes are put into place there could be an impact on the construction skills crisis, which will continue to get worse. If a transformation of the CITB isn’t carried out and the skills crisis get worse, the Government will fail in their house building and infrastructure ambitions. It is vital that, for the CITB to succeed, there needs to a review into how the organisation is structured. The CITB Board at the moment only contains one representative from SMEs in the construction industry. This needs to change to ensure more impact and lead to better changes to benefit the smaller companies in this industry. The reforms need to spread further than the CITB according to the FMB with other changes suggested including making the grant scheme more simple, allowing SMEs to claim back CITB grants.

2017 Serpentine Pavillion Extended Opening

The 2017 Serpentine Pavilion will be remaining open for a further six weeks because of popular demand. The Pavilion will now be open until the 19th of November. AECOM has collaborated with David Glover in order to create the technical advisory services used in the fifth annual Pavillion. David Glover provided the structural and civil engineering as well as the fire and electrical engineering and lighting design for the project. This year’s Pavilion was designed by an award-winning architect Diébédo Francis Kéré, from Gando in Burkina Faso. Diébédo responded to the design brief with a bold and innovative structure that brings his trademark feel of light and life. The Serpentine Pavilion has been constructed in Kensington Gardens and reflects the architects aim of connecting people together and to nature. This year’s Pavilion has an exposed canopy structure which has been engineered by AECOM, and has been created with a range of traditional materials that can encourage visitors to engage with the structure. The architect felt that it was important to make the Pavilion a beacon of light at night. In order to achieve this, AECOM worked with the architect and the contractor, Stage One, in order to deliver visualisations of the final designs. AECOM engineers were involved with the creating the mood of the structure, with a subtle and inviting glow. This year, the Pavilion design has been ambitious and has been successfully completed with the hard work and dedication of everyone involved on the project. A large number of visitors have come to enjoy the Serpentine Pavilion and it will be great to see how the lighting feature will take centre stage as the nights draw in. The Serpentine Pavillion put forward an interesting challenge to the engineers involved, as a knowledge of the materials, planning and Building Control regulations put in pace was needed in order to turn the structure in to functional and buildable spaces in a way that still maintains the original architecture and artistic vision.

THSP’s new Risk Assessment Builder Available on Open Market

THSP has announced that their Risk Assessment Builder is now available to purchase on the open market. The Risk Assessment Builder has been advertised as revolutionary and set to transform the industry. So far the product has received a range of great reviews and has also been shortlisted for two awards already. Risk Assessment is a part of the industry that appears to be here for good, ensuring a safe environment for colleagues while work is being carried out. Therefore, a system that would allow those responsible for completing Risk Assessments through a simpler process is beneficial. It is also important that if anything does happen, the system that has been used to carry out the Risk Assessment has credibility in court. The THSP’s Health and Safety Director has said that the new Risk Assessment builder offered will cut down paperwork by carrying out the assessment needed for a task in a single document as opposed to a range of different documents for each activity. The Risk Assessment Builder has been challenged in a way that would challenge the assessor to think about the process before assessing the risk. This prior assessment than means that any elements of the task can be eliminated for the work is being carried out and the risk will be reduced. The Assessment also displays how much residual risk rating has been reduced by implementing a range of additional control measures. If the assessor is not satisfied by the level of risk for a task, the assessment can be amended to make sure that the level of risk is acceptable. The THSP Risk Assessment Builder offers an annual subscription for five users, including an administrator for 12 months. Additional users can be added to the system when required with company logos which can also be added to help the staff take more responsibility for their assessments.
