McGee turnover tops £100m

Wembley-based demolition and groundworks contractor McGee Group saw its turnover top £100m last year for the first time and the company is continuing to busier than ever before. For the year ended 30th November 2015, McGee Group made a pre-tax profit of £4.7m on turnover of slightly over £100m. Finance director Paul Hickey said: “2015 has been a transformational year for the business with turnover breaching the £100 million mark and delivering a robust pre-tax profit performance. The group generated £11.1m cash from operating activities which allowed us to deleverage our balance sheet, repaying all external debt. The group had no bank overdraft at 30th November 2015 with cash in hand increasing to £4.4m at the year end.” He added: “Based on the outturn to date in 2016, the group is on track to deliver an even better financial performance in 2016.” Managing director Brian McGee, pictured below, said: “We have every reason to be optimistic about the future. Mitsubishi warns of Y150bn loss on assets

©Bloomberg Mitsubishi Corp has become the second Japanese trading house in two days to report massive asset impairments and a likely annual loss, echoing Mitsui & Co’s warning on the effect of plunging commodity prices. On Thursday Mitsubishi, the largest of Japan’s trading houses, said it would write down the value of its assets by Y430bn ($3.8bn). This will wipe out its operating profits and leave a net loss of Y150bn for the year ending March 2016. However, the company it will maintain its dividend of Y50 a share. More On this topic IN Asia-Pacific Companies Losses on this scale illustrate both the aggressive investment by Japanese trading groups in recent years and how far commodity prices have fallen. Ken Kobayashi, chief executive, said Mitsubishi had recognised losses on all of the assets that it is worried about. “The price of oil and minerals has fallen simultaneously after we increased the scale of our resource investments,” said Mr Kobayashi. “The technological innovations allowing extraction of shale gas have been a very large factor.” Mitsubishi’s 20.4 per cent stake in Anglo American Sur, the Chilean copper miner, caused it the greatest pain: a Y280bn impairment. It bought the stake for $4.51bn in 2011 and held it at a book value of Y470bn. Other losses came from gas and iron ore in Australia, ferrochrome in South Africa, decommissioning costs for North Sea oil and a range of other businesses. Mitsubishi’s rivals are suffering in similar ways after shifting their businesses away from trading and towards resources investment in recent years — buying up assets around the world in order to secure resources for the island nation. Mitsui on Thursday forecast its first annual loss since 1947, taking writedowns on many of the same projects that have hurt Mitsubishi. In January, Marubeni also announced large write-offs on commodity investments. Adopting international accounting standards has added to the volatility in trading companies’ results, as it has forced them to recognise impairment losses on their investments. Mitsubishi’s share price fell 4 per cent on Thursday after its announcement, to Y1,920. Copyright The Financial Times Limited 2016. You may share using our article tools. St Olaves Marina sails towards new owner

Savills, on behalf of a private client, has brought to the market St Olaves Marina in Norfolk at a guide price of £1.65 million.  The marina and commercial boatyard benefits from a prime position on the Norfolk Broads, where the River Waveney meets the New Cut, and has excellent road connections via the A143 and A146 with Great Yarmouth 6.5 miles away and Norwich 17 miles. The nearest train station is Haddiscoe, around one mile from the marina with services to Lowestoft and Norwich. The marina has three pontoons providing 144 serviced berths but capable of accommodating  approximately 150 boats. In addition there is around 250m of piled moorings along the New Cut. Two office buildings, car parking, a boat storage area and travel lift accommodating boats up to 70ft by 18ft is also provided. Kay Griffiths, associate in the leisure and trading team at Savills, comments: “St Olaves is a unique opportunity for an owner occupier to acquire a  well located marina that boasts good access by both river and road. The marina has been significantly expanded in recent years and has not yet reached maturity. Whilst able to benefit from good mooring income, the property affords the new owner the opportunity to take the business to the next level and explore avenues such as boat sales and repairs, further moorings, storage and developing holiday lodges.” According to Savills Aspects of Leisure report, UK marina development is on the rise as operators look for additional sites. Several portfolios of marinas came to the market in 2015, the most significant activity in recent years, with bidders from both within and outside the sector. Savills anticipates that the sale of St Olaves Marina is likely to generate a good level of interest. Source link

Apprenticeships funding should meet employer demand, says CITB

CITB has responded to a new report on apprenticeships by saying that funding must meet employer demand. The wide-ranging report, by the National Audit Ofice (NAO), looks at how to maximise benefits from the Government’s apprenticeships programme. Among the NAO’s recommendations was that the Department for Education should set out the overall impact on productivity and growth, how  the programme’s success will be measured, and should develop more robust ways of managing risks. Steve Radley, Director of Policy at CITB, said: “While this report supports boosting apprenticeship numbers, it also shows they must be good quality and targeted at the skills employers need to increase productivity. “High quality construction apprenticeships are vital to building the homes and infrastructure our economy needs. “A target for apprenticeship starts helps to raise its profile but it must take into account employer demand to ensure funding is targeted where it can have the greatest impact.” Source link

BBA enhances wall testing capability

The testing capabilities of the British Board of Agrément (BBA) are set to be significantly expanded with the imminent arrival of some new kit. The BBA has invested in a bespoke environmental chamber that can sending temperatures up to 70°C and down to -20°C to put domestic and commercial wall systems under one of the most onerous test conditions. Described as ‘super-sized and super-stringent’, the new test equipment challenges the performance of externally applied wall systems. Measuring 3 metres in width and 2.8 metres high, the chamber increases the BBA’s capacity to carry out a wide range of hygrothermal tests – thermal cycling with water spray – designed to simulate and accelerate the most extreme conditions a wall system can expect in service. The results can be used as part of a BBA Certification assessment or European Technical Assessment (ETA), leading to an estimate of durability on various externally applied wall systems including external wall insulation, render systems and prefabricated wall panels. The new chamber is currently being built and is expected to be commissioned before the end of June 2016.       This article was published on 17 Jun 2016 (last updated on 17 Jun 2016). Source link

‘DECC may be no more but our energy commitments remain’ says EUA

‘DECC may be no more but our energy commitments remain’ says EUA Published:  19 July, 2016 The Energy & Utilities Alliance (EUA) is calling for clarity and reassurance following the closure of the Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC). Prime Minister Theresa May closed the department under her first cabinet reshuffle and transferred its responsibilities to the newly named Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy, under MP Greg Clark. “The announcement is distracting but we must stay focused,” said Isaac Occhipinti, head of external affairs at the Energy & Utilities Alliance (EUA). “We are disappointed that the DECC has been moved. At a time when industry is looking to the government for some certainty and continuity, this won’t help. However we recognise the links between energy and industrial strategy and so we are looking forward to working with Mr Clark and his new team on decarbonising UK heat and exploring how green gas can help us meet our 2050 climate targets. “I will be calling on the new Minister to clarify, as a matter of urgency, where they stand on existing policies such as ECO. Industry wants reassurance and soon. “Attention needs to be directed at decarbonising heat. All too often politicians use heat and power interchangeably and this needs to stop. The new department needs to embrace green gas as a means of decarbonising heat by utilising the existing grid to deliver low carbon heat to UK buildings with little disruption or expense. EUA will be closely monitoring the performance of the new department.” Source link

New female ambassadors promote careers in industry

New female ambassadors promote careers in industry Published:  09 May, 2016 Training charity JTL has welcomed three additional young women to its Ambassador programme, which aims to raise awareness of the opportunities that exist for young women in the HVAC industry. Hollie Heffer, Gina Mann and Sarah Dengate have joined the group of women from across England and Wales, all undertaking an apprenticeship or already working in the building services engineering sector, to talk to other young women about the pleasures and pitfalls of their chosen careers.  “Women are enormously under-represented in the sector – for example, currently less than 1% of new electrical apprentices in the UK are women. But our experience demonstrates very clearly that young females can – and do – achieve great things in this industry,” said JTL’s Ambassador scheme manager, Yasmin Damree-Ralph.  “Our aim is, quite simply, to educate young women about the career opportunities that exist for them in building services. The best way for girls currently at school or college to hear our message is via other young women, so back in 2013 we brought together a fantastic group of intelligent and enthusiastic advocates to help us spread the word.  “They do a truly fantastic job – speaking in schools, relating their experiences, answering questions, offering advice and dispelling the odd myth or two! What better way for our message to be relayed?”  All from Kent, Hollie and Gina are both plumbing and heating apprentices, while Sarah is an electrical apprentice.  The JTL Ambassadors can be contacted via JTL’s website or on Facebook.  Source link
