ASCENA has been named as the hotel operator at the much-anticipated £120 million Guildhall development in Nottingham. Ascena will bring a 160-bed four-star hotel offering to the city which will include a rooftop fine dining restaurant, spa and wedding and conference facilities. The scheme will be submitted for detailed planning over the next few weeks. Ascena has been working over the past few months to bring forward the redevelopment of the listed Guildhall. John Wilby, project lead for Ascena, said: “We are delighted that this scheme has taken a significant step forward. We will soon be submitting the development for planning and it is likely that all being well, that work will start on site in autumn 2020. “It is a landmark development for the city and a key destination for people across the East Midlands. The Guildhall is an amazing building and we are naturally delighted to be working the city council.” There will be sensitive restoration of the Grade II listed Nottingham Guildhall – the city’s former magistrates’ court – and Fire Station House, he added. “There will be a new lightweight extension to the northern elevation of the existing Guildhall to replace an unsightly latter-day extension,” John said. “We will be utilising high-grade materials and are working closely with our heritage consultant Turley and Historic England to ensure that this listed building is brought back to its former glory.” Ascena owns and runs a number of luxury hotel and restaurant facilities in Birmingham and the south West, one of which is the Birmingham Michelin starred restaurant Opheem – which is run by Ascena business partner Aktar Islam. Aktar, who is a former winner of The Great British Menu and The F Word, will be running the rooftop restaurant. The existing courtrooms will be sympathetically converted to bar and restaurant facilities, retaining many of the original key listed features. There will be a rooftop bar and restaurant to the new build extension incorporating Fire Station House. The Guildhall building itself will house the hotel, while more modern extensions at the back of the building would be demolished and rebuilt. The remaining part of the site, including the old fire and police stations, are subject to a mixed-use redevelopment which will be announced soon. Following detailed planning approval, it is likely that work will start on the hotel in autumn 2020. Since it was built in 1887, it has hosted a magistrates’ court, police station, and fire station. Nottingham City Council was based at the building between 1996 and 2010, until it moved to new offices in Loxley House. There will be a public exhibition on Monday 2 December at 38 Carrington Street from 3pm to 7pm when it will be possible to see images of the development and meet with the project team.

The work was part of the recent interior refurbishments of the Celebrity Summit and Celebrity Millennium cruise liners. Barnshaws delivered a tonne of precision-curved stainless steel to create two modern, curved canopies forming the entrance to the ship’s restaurants. Though more commonly associated with curved structural steel and aesthetic metal elements in the construction industry, Barnshaws is seeing growing involvement in the marine sector. Its wide range of specialist bending machines, its branches in the West Midlands, Manchester and Scotland, combined with its EXC class 4 for steel fabrication, means the business is well-placed to meet the volume and quality demands of the industry. Leisure Structures reached out to Barnshaws to provide five stainless steel 200 x 100 mm RHS sections at six metres in length curved to a 8980 mm radius. Having worked with Barnshaws in the past, the contractor was well aware of the high-quality workmanship the business could provide. This was particularly important as the curved stainless-steel elements of the canopies would be visible to passengers on both vessels, so it was imperative that rolling and transportation left minimal marking on the steelwork. Each section was ‘protection wrapped’ during the metal bending process to ensure the best possible finish. The Celebrity Summit and Celebrity Millennium were fitted out in Alaska and Singapore respectively. Both are sister ships of the Millennium-class, operated by Celebrity Cruises. The Summit’s two GE gas turbines allow the ship to reach 24 knots and carry 2,218 passengers; while the Millennium relies on the same turbines to carry 2,138 passengers while attaining the same top speed. Stuart Anderson, Sales Manager at Barnshaws, said: “As a group, we have previously supplied high-quality fabrications to support the offshore industry. Supporting cruise liners was new to us, but we have employed our steel curving experience and extensive in-house capabilities to deliver these sections within the project timeframe.”

The team, led by Ming Chan and Hiroko Takata, will specialise in Tonkotsu Ramen, a creamy pork broth that is cooked for 16 hours and served over noodles. Beza is a traditional Ethiopian restaurant that uses plant-based and seasonal ingredients to serve a range of authentic dishes from a 100 per cent vegan menu. Beza was previously a tenant at Artworks Elephant, a temporary pop-up retail park that was created to provide community-led space for start-ups and small businesses in the area. With an increasing number of retailers moving into the development, Elephant Park is rapidly becoming one of the most desirable areas to live, work or visit in south London. Kristy Lansdown, Project Director of Elephant Park for Lendlease, said: “Having Beza and KOI Ramen Bar open their doors has made this corner of south London feel even more special. This ‘Center for Sporting Excellence’ has been designed with efforts to not disturb the surrounding landscape and environment, with solar panels built into the roof of the building to supply it with hot water. When will the football renovations – including the Stade Louis II – be finished? The Louis II Stadium Center for Sporting Excellence and the ASM student dormitories are expected to be ready by the 2020-21 football season. How much money has been spent on this project? It is unclear how much has been spent on all three projects, however investments into the construction of the Stade Louis II Center for Sporting Excellence have amounted to €55 million – that’s £47.4 million or $61.1 million. Since AS Monaco President Dmitry Rybolovlev took over in 2011, around €335 million has been invested into the club. Is Rybolovlev planning to sell the football club? There has been ongoing speculation that Rybolovlev wants to sell AS Monaco, however the Russian billionaire has completely denied this. In a management meeting earlier this year, Rybolovlev expressed his commitment to taking the club forward into the future, saying: “Rumours about a potential change of ownership at the club have been repeatedly denied. The Newcastle division of the international property and construction consultancy will provide quantity surveying, employer’s agent and principal designer services for the scheme, which will see the creation of a new centre with a 25-metre swimming pool, sports hall, spa facilities, fitness suite and studios. It will also have a new community services hub that will include a library, customer service centre and adult learning area. Construction work is due to start next year, with the centre open for business in 2021. Meanwhile, a £20m project to build a new leisure centre in Berwick has been given the green light by planners. The existing Swan Centre is being demolished in phases to ensure continuity of leisure services for local residents and replaced with a new facility with a 25-metre swimming pool, sports hall, an outdoor all-weather football pitch, fitness suite, fitness studios and spa facilities. Construction work is due to start by the end of this year, with the centre operational in 2021. Advance Northumberland, the development arm of Northumberland County Council, is project-managing both schemes supported by Henry Riley and several other key partners. Both schemes are being funded by the council. Scott Davidson, managing director of HDD, said: “We are delighted that councillors have approved this well-planned scheme that will bring significant economic benefits to the local area. “The proposed 84 bed Premier Inn is set to generate around 29 new jobs, with a target for 50% to be taken by those not in employment, education or training aged between 16 and 24. The new Aldi store will employ 50 full time equivalent employees, as well as supporting the expansion of facilities at the new Sheppey Distribution Centre which ultimately will provide 400 jobs and will broaden the retail offer in Faversham. “Thanks to the support and dedication of the team at Pegasus Group we now look forward to progressing this development at the soonest possible opportunity.” Steve Lewis-Roberts, a Senior Director at Pegasus Group, added: “We are extremely pleased that HDD’s vision for this development, that will bring much needed services to the new community and the existing town, has won the support of Swale Borough Council. “During the consultation process significant design changes were made to ensure a bespoke development that is right for Perry Court, and this was reflected by the fact that were no objections from statutory consultees and that the application had the support of the local Faversham Town Council. “It has been a rewarding project to be part of with all parties working hard to steer it towards today’s positive conclusion.”

The new 58,500m2 warehouse, Lidl’s largest in Great Britain, is a base for 600 existing Lidl employees, who have relocated from the retailer’s existing distribution centre in Livingston. The site at Eurocentral will support Lidl’s growing store estate across Scotland, set to reach the milestone of 100 locations in the new year. A further 12 new stores are planned over the next three years in locations including Dundee, East Kilbride, Cowdenbeath, Larkhall and Dumbarton. “We’re very excited to be celebrating the opening of our new Eurocentral distribution centre, which represents a pivotal moment in our ambitious growth plans across Scotland,” said Lidl GB Regional Director for Scotland, Ross Millar. “The warehouse underlines our commitment to creating more jobs for Scotland and I’d like to extend my thanks to both store and warehouse colleagues, who’ve worked so hard to get us to where we are today.” The discounter also plans to open a further four warehouses by 2025 in Bolton, Peterborough, Luton and Leeds. Wates Construction will deliver the scheme for Liverpool City Centre, which will see a four-star hotel built with 200 units. Liverpool City Council’s Planning Committee approved plans for the development at a meeting today, 08 October. Construction of the new hotel is expected to commence in early 2020 and will see Wates fulfil a commitment to provide extensive training and employment opportunities for local people as well as boosting the city’s economy through the appointment of local supply chain partners. “Liverpool should be the premier cruise destination on the west coast of the UK and our new terminal will underpin that ambition and make it a reality. This hotel is critical to the plan to create a world-class experience for the cruise companies and their passengers. The city is working with some of the very best in the construction industry to deliver the facilities and I’m delighted they’ve got the green light to start this hugely important scheme,” added Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson.
