United Living sponsors Global Sustainability Film Awards 2022

United Living Group, the provider of critical infrastructure and affordable housing, is pleased to announce it will return as the main sponsor of the Television for the Environment (Tve) Global Sustainability Film Awards 2022, a film competition recognising those whose films most powerfully portray solutions for sustainability.   Previous shortlisted films include the World Wildlife Fund’s project to capture never-before-seen behaviours of basking sharks off the shores of Scotland using innovative camera technology. Another shortlisted film captured Breathe London, an ambitious project that measured and mapped Londoners’ daily exposure to air pollution using a network of advanced air pollution sensors. United Living has proudly sponsored the event for six years. The group is supporting its clients on their decarbonisation journey as well as setting its own net zero carbon and sustainability objectives. United Living has implemented a range of measures that prioritise sustainability, including commitments to reduce carbon emissions to Net Zero by 2030, two decades ahead of the UK government’s existing target of Net Zero by 2050. Other measures include reducing avoidable waste to zero in the development process of all United Living Homes, as well as eliminating the use of single-use plastics by the same timeframe.  All this whilst remaining focused on supporting a wholly diverse and inclusive environment. The Groups ethos is to continuously invest in its people through funded qualifications and trainee programmes, and in social value to leave a lasting positive legacy in the communities it serves. At the awards ceremony, a brief address will be given by CEO and Chairman of United Living, Neil Armstrong, on the importance of the Awards in spreading awareness of a more sustainable way of life, as well as the role organisations such as United Living must play in this endeavour. Neil Armstrong, CEO and Chairman, United Living Group, commented: “tve was founded on the very principle of supporting progress towards achieving UN Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG). United Living has embraced ESG targets which also align to the UNSDG. We are already on a journey, and have been for years as a responsible business, with sustainable priorities. We are proud and delighted to be able to put our shoulder behind the awards as the main sponsor for thesixth year. By doing so we can support tve in our own small way, in the fantastic work they are doing to highlight one of the most important issues we face as a society today. The stories the award ceremony celebrates, inspire further innovation and aid the global transition to a more sustainable future for us all.” Mei Sim Lai OBE DI, Chairperson of the tve Global Sustainability Film Awards, commented: “Tve is a charitable organisation which relies on the support of partners around the world to fulfil its mission of promoting sustainable development through film and other media. Were it not for the generous sponsorship of organisations such as United Living, we would not have the capacity or scope to hold such an event or attract and promote such a high quality of film entrants. The fact that the number of Award categories has continued to increase over the years, is a testament to the value of our partnership, and we hope that United Living Group and the GSFA can continue to go from strength to strength together”.

Winners of the Southside Hereford University Design Challenge Announced

The winners of the TDUK Southside Hereford University Design Challenge (#TDchallenge22) have been announced following an incredibly competitive nine-month process.  The challenge was based on a live project to design a net zero community center, showcasing timber construction and meeting Passivhaus Standard. After 150 students registered from 57 Universities and nine months of webinars, workshops, & interdisciplinary teamwork – the winning team was select at a live two-day event at the New Model Institute for Technology and Engineering (NMITE). Students presented (both in-person & online) their designs to a diverse judging panel representing both local clients and leading figures in UK sustainable construction. Proposals were judged for longevity, desirability, adaptability, circularity, and producing more renewable energy than required. The winning team brought together an interdisciplinary group of students from universities the length and breadth of the UK – from Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen to the University of Portsmouth – to produce a design the judging panel declared “A strong response and a great integration of uses, with simple elements including a good use of structural timber used effectively and meeting the Passivhaus standard”. The challenge was led by Timber Development UK and ran in partnership with NMITE, Edinburgh Napier University, and the Passivhaus Trust. Built environment students and 2021 graduates from UK universities were invited to take part in the challenge to design Southside Hereford, a detached single storey building to accommodate three diverse partners with net zero aspirations. Providing a vibrant, inspiring, and inclusive sports, food, and skills community focal point for the people of South Wye. Southside is a collaboration between two highly energised established community organisations Growing Local CIC and Belmont Wanderers CIC, and NMITE, all of whom share a common goal to improve the future health, wellbeing, life chances and employment skillset of the people of South Wye and Hereford. Each of the detailed designs for Southside is ‘net zero’, creatively employing energy and resource efficient building materials and construction methods, focusing on the health and wellbeing of people, the community, and the planet. The designs were judged for longevity, desirability, adaptability, circularity, and a warming climate, as well as producing more energy from renewable sources than required. With the main material focus and specification for Southside to be timber and timber hybrid systems, each team’s detailed design was to meet the Passivhaus Standard and exceed both the RIBA 2030 Climate Challenge targets and the LETI Climate Emergency Design Guide metrics. Congratulations to the winners Alice Senior (University of Portsmouth), Malwina Bartoszewicz (Edinburgh Napier University), Johanna Schwarting (Swansea University), Kyle Henderson (Robert Gordon University), Daniela Lopez (University of Gloucestershire), Ali Uddin (University of Edinburgh), and Deepak Sadhwani (Cardiff University). “The students tackled a tricky mult-client brief whilst tracking the golden thread of environmental excellence through their design iterations – I have no doubt that the rigour needed to familiarise themselves with the Passivhaus design outcome will stand them in good stead in their career progression, and the judges particularly appreciated the enthusiasm and energy they brought to this through inter-disciplinary collaboration.”Lynne Sullivan, Passivhaus Trust  Board “The #TDChallenge22 brought together interdisciplinary students, companies, sponsors, judges, and educators from across the UK, resulting in a phenomenal display of competence, energy and commitment to sustainability and learning. I was proud to have been a judge and that NMITE was a partner organisation, and a host to the competition. Well done everyone!”Professor Elena Rodriguez-Falcon, President & Chief Executive, New Model Institute for Technology and Engineering (NMITE) “We need a highly trained construction workforce with a better understanding of wood and timber to achieve net zero and hit the ever more demanding carbon targets for construction. Fortunately, it’s evident from every student who has taken part in the Hereford Southside: University Design Challenge that there is incredible built environment talent emerging from UK universities. I know the skills and knowledge you have gained and demonstrated in low-carbon construction will be greatly in demand. We all look forward to seeing what you do next.”David Hopkins, Chief Executive, Timber Development UK To find out more about the winning design visit: https://bit.ly/TDchallenge22winners

BDP Shortlisted in Two Categories of Scottish Design Awards

Glasgow Queen Street Station and the University of Strathclyde Learning and Teaching Building, both designed by BDP’s Glasgow studio, have been shortlisted in separate categories of this year’s Scottish Design Awards. The transformation of Scotland’s third-busiest rail hub from a run-down collection of outdated extensions into a soaring contemporary concourse that celebrates the station’s Victorian heritage, has been nominated in the ‘Public Building’ category, while the refurbishment of two existing buildings to form new teaching spaces, lecture theatre, Student union and support services, has been shortlisted in the ‘Retrofit’ category. And Ed Dymock, Architect Associate, BDP, said: “Since 1878, James Carswell’s original train shed has been hidden away at the heart of Queen Street, but the southern extension of the platforms gave us the opportunity to open up the views, work with volume and scale and allow the station to play a civic role within the city. Martin Jarvie, Architect Associate, BDP, said: “We are delighted to be nominated for these awards. At Strathclyde University the decision to transform the existing buildings rather than a new-build project has substantial sustainable benefits.  Our Sustainability Team compared the embodied carbon of the adaptive re-use of the existing building structure to a notional new build equivalent and demonstrated that the project saved around 67% of CO2e.” The winners of the Scottish Design Awards will be announced on 29 June.
