Timber marketing summit to focus on health and wellbeing

The timber industry is invited to take on the health and wellbeing agenda this autumn at the Wood for Good Marketing Summit. Aimed at timber marketing and communications professionals, the event ‘Marketing Timber for the Health and Wellbeing Agenda’ will take place on Thursday 20 September at Headspace in Farringdon, London. Health and wellbeing, indoor air quality and the use of healthy building materials are becoming increasingly important in construction and the marketing summit will assess the market potential, demand and drivers for healthy building products. The event will cover innovative approaches and best practice in marketing for the health and wellbeing agenda. An interview style panel debate with speakers including Harry Knibb, principal consultant and healthy buildings expert at WSP, and Olga Turner, director and co-founder of Ekkist. This will be followed by an open audience discussion allowing for speakers and delegates to establish requirements for healthy building products and how to meet them. Christiane Lellig, Wood for Good campaign manager, said: “We’ve had discussions with organisations such as the Construction Products Association, Savills and Legal and General and they’ve all shared that there is currently no particular focus or research on health and wellbeing trends in residential buildings. “To date the focus has been on office buildings with the intention to increase employee retention and performance, but we want to know what the key challenges are for timber marketing and communications professionals catering for the wider health and wellbeing agenda. “For example, how does everyone describe a healthy building material? This is an opportunity for us to come together and unite in our messaging and gain a better understanding of healthy building standards and material databases, so we can communicate this effectively and accurately.” The marketing summit, taking place the day before the Timber Trade Journal Awards, is an essential opportunity for anyone responsible for communicating about timber products and allows for networking with like-minded professionals. The final session on the day will be exclusively for Wood for Good supporters to discuss the main focus for 2019, receive a brief update on 2018 performance, and learn about the new funding strategy. Tickets are free to Wood for Good supporters and a 25% discount is available for British Woodworking Federation and Timber Trade Federation members. Numbers are limited so register for tickets now: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/wood-for-good-marketing-summit-autumn-2018-tickets-48237635065 Subscribe for the latest e-news on timber in design and construction here: www.woodforgood.com/info/sign-up

Snows invest to improve operations at Mansfield and Glastonbury Distribution Centres.

At Snows, our promise to customers is a simple one. We aim to give the trade exactly what they need and inspire trust in our ability to deliver on the promises made. To make this promise a reality, we are making substantial investments to refine and modernise our operations and ultimately, better cater for the customers of tomorrow. One of our biggest investments takes place at our Mansfield Distribution Centre, where a regeneration programme of circa. £0.5million is taking place until the end of July 2018. The site will be reconfigured, which will include demolition of existing offices, erection of 900m2 of warehousing and installation of 1200m2 of hardstanding ground adjacent to the existing site – alongside this, an additional high-speed line will be installed in the mill. The result of these changes will improve efficiencies and productivity across the picking and milling of product and enlarge our geographical area for delivery.   Double shift capabilities will be introduced into the Mansfield and Glastonbury Distribution Centres to improve overall capacity of the organisation and improve our already-considerable level of flexibility.   These operational changes will result in Snows ability to offer competitive prices and deliver on our original promise to give the trade exactly what they need, due to improving cost efficiencies throughout the business. Have you heard about our new National Sales Office?   Our Regional Sales Offices have recently been consolidated into a central location in Towcester, Northamptonshire. Its aim is to provide high quality customer service, which promotes two-way communication between us and our customers. Although customers can (and will) still receive support from our regional locations, the change to one central office will allow us to properly structure and manage every aspect of the customer journey – from enquiry, to quotation, order processing and relationship development. The new office is made up of individuals who have a proven track record in customer service, and have a fresh, forward-thinking attitude that align with the new vision of Snows Timber. Customers can be assured that “communication” is set to be the word of the year at Snows.

Metsä Wood: MIT Architecture contributes to Open Source Wood

Metsä Wood is pleased to announce that a graduate architecture design studio called ‘Mass Timber Mid Rise’ at the Department of Architecture at MIT is contributing to the Open Source Wood initiative – the pioneering open innovation project aimed at facilitating knowledge sharing and growth in modular wood construction. “At a moment when many coastal US cities face the challenges of urbanization, innovating and so testing ideas for green urban hybrid housing is more essential than ever. Our MTMR studio explores new models of mid-rise affordable housing utilizing mass-timber technologies and Metsä Wood’s Open Source Wood initiative provides us valuable insight into wood construction and prefabrication technologies”, says Professor Andrew Scott of MIT Architecture. The Open Source Wood initiative aims to speed up the growth of modular wood construction by making wood element designs freely available for all. Only a fraction of urban construction today is wood, partly because knowledge and expertise in wood construction have been difficult to find. Open Source Wood gathers innovations in modular wood construction from all corners of the world and makes them available for all, free of charge. “We are excited to work with the design studio at MIT Architecture and I look forward to what we can achieve together”, says Mikko Saavalainen, SVP Business Development Metsä Wood. The MIT group participates today in an Open Source Wood Hackathon in Finland together with Metsä Wood and students from Aalto University. DHF produces comprehensive guide to benefits of complete Timber Doorsets

Door & Hardware Federation’s (DHF) Timber Doorset Group has produced a comprehensive guide to the benefits of ‘factory prepared complete timber doorsets’.  The group actively promotes the commercial and legal benefits of specifying complete timber doorsets, as opposed to purchasing individual components from various sources; they are then made up on site.  And with an all-inclusive list of benefits now available in an easy-to-download publication, it is anticipated that building professionals such as specifiers, architects and contractors will achieve a wider understanding and recognise the advantages to purchasing a complete product, including those involved in the modular build market. The new DHF publication lists the many benefits of choosing a complete timber doorset, primarily, that these products derive from one single source of supply, are quality-controlled products and will ultimately, result in cost-savings as all necessary items are included.  In addition, using a complete timber doorset is a greener option, as they are engineered for energy efficiency and sustainability. “In everyone’s minds, recent events have brought to the fore, the premise that a poorly fitted door, or one that has had the integrity compromised, can be a liability,” explains DHF Marketing Manager, Patricia Sowsbery-Stevens.  “DHF believes that installing a complete doorset that has been tested as a complete unit, manufactured under a third-party certification scheme, installed and maintained by a company certified to do so under third-party certification, provides peace of mind, reduced installation time and ultimately, costs. “It is a ‘no fuss’ solution, with no need to purchase separate components as everything is included.  In addition, complete doorsets can be installed later in the building process, reducing the risk of on-site damage whilst works are on-going and are a perfect solution for modular builds.  There are so many advantages to purchasing a complete doorset and we believe that DHF’s latest publication will enable a greater understanding of the benefits of selecting these products.”
