Industrial Metal Services have announced that they have saved more than £250,000 a year by improving their vehicle routing as well as the driving behaviour of their drivers across their 55-strong truck fleet. The steel stockholding company have managed to make their operations more efficient after integrating the WEBFLEET fleet management solution which has been developed by TomTom Telematics and Maxoptra’s route planning and scheduling software. The systems have been implemented at Industrial Metal Services by the Gold Partner of TomTom Telematics, Communicate Better. Industrial Metal Solutions has implemented the new fleet management solutions from TomTom and Maxoptra across their fleet of trucks in order to help the company plan their deliveries in a more dynamic way as well as utilise vehicle location data and estimated times of arrival. WEBFLEET is used to send route and schedule information and is then sent to IMS’s mobile workers through their TomTom PRO 8275 TRUCK driver terminals. The company uses this system to allocate more than 400 delivery jobs every day. These jobs are now allocated according to the quickest arrival times, taking into account traffic information as well as historic route data. IMS has updated and uses the WEBFLEET system in order to keep their businesses up to date with more accurate arrival times, using the technology to easily and quickly adjust arrival times according to traffic delays and other problems that could possibly occur. Being able to keep businesses informed has led to an improvement of the company’s customer experience. The miles that have been cut through the routing systems installed has led to an annual saving of more than £191,000. It is thought that this saving has come from an anticipated reduction in vehicle maintenance as well as an increase in productivity. There is also a driver improvement programme, underpinned with OptiDrive 360 which is a component of WEBFLEET. This training programme has boosted the number of mile travelled per gallon which is thought to lead to further savings for IMS of around £62,000 each year. OptiDrive 360 is a programme that scores drivers according to a range of key performance indicators as well as offering real-time feedback for the drivers and advice that will help them to improve their driving performance.
Ecotricity’s green gas mill has been given the go-ahead to be built. The project at Sparsholt College in Hampshire – the first of its kind in Britain – received planning permission this week from Winchester City Council. The £10 million green gas mill funded by Ecotricity will be fuelled by locally sourced grass and produce enough clean gas to heat over 4000 homes per year. The project is also expected to inject £60 million into the local economy. As part of the partnership, Ecotricity will also help fund the development of a Renewable Energy Demonstration Centre at the college. The college has also agreed funding of a £1.2 million in grant from the Local Enterprise Partnership (M3 LEP). Ecotricity founder Dale Vince said: “This is great news, green gas from grass has so much to offer Britain, and this planning consent gives us the opportunity to get started. “Earlier this week the government overruled the local planners in Lancashire to grant approval for the first Fracking site in Britain – as opinion polls show opposition to Fracking reaching an all-time high. “Green gas is the answer; Hampshire looks set to lead the way.” The original planning application for the site was refused in April 2016 but the supplier addressed the transport concerns in a fresh application and included significant traffic alterations and new information. Sparsholt College principal Tim Jackson said: “I had every confidence that the planning committee would see the logic of this application which is entirely in line with local and national planning policy. “The low carbon aspirations of Winchester through their Low Carbon Strategy are commendable but ambitious, and it needs projects like this one at Sparsholt College to help the 20 per cent target of energy generated from renewables by 2020 to stand any chance of meeting this.” Ecotricity introduced the concept of making green gas from grass in Britain early last year, and says it will be full speed ahead to complete the necessary preparation before construction can begin on its latest project. This month, the green supplier also told Utility Week that it would be interested in entering the water market and taking “an eco-approach to water”. Source link

A new development has gone on sale. The new homes have the unique feature of rooftop terraces and are located in the exclusive SA1. The private terraces of each property will measure 20 square meters, which is thought to be the size of an average living room. The properties will have sea views and will catch most of the day’s sun. There are sixteen homes that are a part of this development and feature a terrace, and a total to twenty-three houses in the development on a whole. The development has been carried out by Neath based Hale Homes and can be found at Prince’s Wharf. The development in SA1 also includes one detached property featuring a rooftop terrace and a garden. The properties in the Prince’s Wharf development are available on sale from £250,000. Each home is either three or four stories high and features a central staircase that runs throughout and from the garage below. As well as the homes that feature the private roof terraces, five of the properties also have a garden. When the development was first opened for reservation, four of the properties were quickly snapped up, which means that the development could be very successful for Hale Homes. The Prince’s Wharf development has been created with a number of environmental concerns in mind. All twenty-three of the properties in the Prince’s Wharf development have been constructed to high energy efficiency ratings. Every house features Triso-Warm which is a specialised type of external wall system that could have significant benefits for heating and lead to a cut in heating costs. Hale Homes have expressed their delight at being able to develop a number of homes in a sought-after area. The Prince’s Wharf development is located in a sought-after area and is perfect for those wanting to live somewhere with both coastal and city elements, offering people the best of both worlds.
Let’s be CO safe abroad, says APPCOG Published: 16 May, 2016 The All-Party Parliamentary Carbon Monoxide Group (APPCOG) has called for greater awareness amongst travellers regarding carbon monoxide (CO) safety, and for both the government and travel industry to act to help keep Britons abroad safe from CO. This follows a recent panel discussion chaired by David Burrowes MP, called following the death of Francesca Dingley from CO poisoning in Chengdu, China in 2015. The panel featured evidence from Mark Dingley, Francesca’s father, alongside the CO All Fuel Forum’s Leigh Greenham, and Angela Hill, destinations services manager at the Association of British Travel Agents. Mr Dingley urged the audience that CO alarms should be seen as an essential travel item, and that the travel industry should do more to promote the need for holidaymakers to take alarms with them when they travel. Additionally, Mr Dingley urged that advice on CO included on the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website should be made more prominent, and be delivered more forcefully. Research by the Safer Tourism Foundation has revealed that just 5% of respondents consider CO risks before going on holiday, despite the same research finding that 1 in 10 of the 12,000 respondents surveyed had been affected some way by CO. Jersey Water’s application to allow the pesticide oxadixyl to exceed the legal limit in the island’s mains water has been granted. The dispensation, involving a key reservoir that was brought back into service this month, has been approved by Jersey’s environment minister Steve Luce. The regulatory limit for oxadixyl in treated water is 0.1ug/l which is equivalent to one part in 10 billion. The new temporary limit has been set at 0.3ug/l, 100 times lower than the already prudent health-based limit of 30ug/l. Jersey Water said it has so far been able to keep the levels below the regulatory limit but may need to rely on the dispensation in the event that oxadixyl levels increase over the summer. The dispensation will remain in place for up to three years while the company researches and implements a long-term treatment solution to the oxadixyl problem. The company brought Val de la Mare reservoir back in to service at the beginning of June after five months, following the discovery in February of pesticide oxadixyl in streams feeding the reservoir. To enable the water from Val de la Mare to be used over the summer, the company applied for a temporary dispensation under the Water (Jersey) Law 1972 allowing it to exceed the regulatory limits. Jersey Water chief executive Helier Smith said: “The need for a dispensation in this instance is principally a legal and regulatory compliance matter rather than a health-based issue. The water that we supply will remain safe to drink. “The presence of oxadixyl in Val de la Mare reservoir and elsewhere is historic and has arisen due to factors outside of the company’s control. We are working hard to find a way to remove oxadixyl through treatment but in the meantime will work to complying with the lower regulatory limit where it is practical for us to do so.” Val de la Mare Reservoir represents 35 per cent of the company’s water storage capacity.
