Harnessing that satisfaction that only building can give you #iBuiltThis2019

The #iBuiltThis2019 competition is open for entries. The competition, run by FIS, now in its third year, is a visual campaign that draws on the pride construction workers take when they see finished projects that they have worked on – harnessing the “I Built This” feeling to promote construction as a career choice. The competition platform goes live on 13 June and entries will close on 15 September with the winners announced at the awards ceremony at UK Construction Week on 8 October 2019. FIS CEO, Iain McIlwee stated, “The construction industry employs around 3.1 million people, that equates to one in ten people working in the UK. #iBuiltThis is about celebrating this through social media. It is something that everyone in construction can get behind. We’ve focussed on making it simple. This launch is a call to action to individuals and companies to take #iBuiltThis and make it your own, use it to highlight excellent work one of your new starters or apprentices has done, as an initiative to help engage with your local school, college or even Scout group, make entering an activity for a young person on work experience or encourage your own children to enter – use it to help those around you to understand the joy that can be found in making and building, making a mark on the future landscape of the UK.” To encourage young people to get involved, the competition has been divided into three age groups with some fabulous prizes to be won: 13 and under (family trip to Legoland with an overnight stay at Castle Hotel, 14-18 (an iPhone XR) and 19 plus (a getaway for two adults in one of Canopy & Stars exclusive properties in the UK). We would like entrants to share a photo of themselves (selfie) with the image of a completed project they have built, or helped to build and enter on the competition platform when it opens on 13 June. FIS is encouraging schools and colleges to get fully engaged with and run their own mini #iBuiltThis competitions and enter the finalists and winners via a secure platform. A special prize for the most engaged school or college will be awarded to the institution that makes the most entries. The competition is open to everyone who has a passion for building, construction, design, fit-out, interiors and more. Entrants are encouraged to be as creative as possible, whether it’s a model, a physical structure, building, drawing or even a digital design using software. They are free to use any material for their build. This year’s competition sponsors include, UK Construction Week, Silver Trowel Ltd, Building Heroes, CSCS, Astins Ltd and Michel Mersh Brick Holdings Plc. We also have an exclusive line-up on the judging panel consisting of industry leaders, advocates and educators who are backing this competition. The diversity the judging panel bring demonstrate how collaboration across the industry can help us to reach out to a wider audience and present construction as an attractive industry, full of opportunity and diversity of careers for young people and new entrants. This year’s judging panel: • Alison Watson MBE – Founder and chief executive of Class of Your Own • Brendan Williams – CEO of Building Heroes • Fred Mills – Co-Founder and managing director of The B1M channel • Kathryn Lennon-Johnson – Founder and director of Built Environment Skills in Schools (BESS) • Mark Farmer – industry advocate and Founding director and CEO of Cast Consultancy • Naomi Hamilton – winner of IBT2018 – 14-18 age category contest – will be in attendance • Rebecca Lovelace – Founder of Building People • Steve Coley – FIS immediate past president and FIS Skills Board member The competition will be judged on the best creative picture and best response to the question asked within each age category. The public vote will make up 50% of the overall scores. The remaining 50% of the scores will be ranked in order by the judging panel. Alison Watson MBE, Founder and chief executive of Class of Your Own said “I am thrilled to be involved in #iBuiltThis 2019 competition, it’s a great way to engage with people of all ages, especially young people and inspire them to use their skills in building and showcasing the projects they are proud of. I would encourage everybody to enter, especially schools and colleges. I am looking forward to seeing all the brilliant entries for this competition”. New safety performance displays to be launched across SIG Distribution

Following the introduction of the Health and Safety at Work Act in 1974, the United Kingdom has gone on to have one of the best combined health and safety records in the world. Taking place from 17 to 21 June 2019, UK Health and Safety Week celebrates excellence in health and safety, while recognising there is still room for improvement. At SIG Distribution, Health and Safety goes beyond a check list of do’s and don’ts. Our goal is to achieve zero accidents, through proactivity and education, creating a culture of awareness and compliance that even the smallest action in our business plays its part in ensuring the safety of everyone that encounters our business. This includes our people, customers, our industry and the communities we serve. Since the launch of our Zero Harm prorgamme in 2014, several initiatives have been launched to support this ambition, and the latest will see the installation of ‘Incident Performance Placards’ at the entrance to each of our SIG Distribution centres.  Through proactively displaying key accident performance information, including days since last lost time accident, total accidents and number of work days lost in the year, everyone working at and visiting these locations will be aware of the centre’s performance and can drive continuous improvement to health and safety together. This drive for ongoing improvement will be reinforced through the inclusion of a performance rating on each placard, from A to C, based on the centre’s most recent audit score and recent accident performance. Rupert Tubbs, Operations Director for SIG Distribution, said “Zero Harm means sustaining a work environment which supports the health and safety of our staff, customers and visitors and minimises the impact our business has on the environment. “The new placards will be used to convey a clear, unambiguous message that can be easily understood by everyone.”

10 Ways to Browse the Internet Securely and Privately

Taking a saying from one of the most successful – if not the most successful – TV series of all time (Game of Thrones), the above could not be truer. One moment, you could be checking out some cute cat videos on YouTube and the next, you land on a website that scrambles your device’s data, demanding a token (ransom) before they release it to you. That makes it very important to ensure the safety and privacy of your personal data when browsing the web. Here are some tips to help you make that happen. 1) Install A Secure Browser You need a browser to access the Internet. This makes your choice of browser the first step in ensuring your online safety. ‘How?’ You may ask. You may not know this, but some of the common web browsers out there are equipped with various security settings designed to keep you safe while surfing the Internet. An example of this is the SmartScreen URL and Application Reputation Filtering feature which Microsoft has incorporated into its Edge browser since as far back as 2017. What this feature basically does is run checks on the reputation of websites you choose to access before they load into your browser. Should there be any funny business in the code of such a website, Microsoft Edge notifies you immediately. From that point, you get the option to choose whether you’d like to proceed to the website or go back at that point. As of the time of this writing, the best browsers you can go for (in terms of usability and security, which are the most important things here) are: Google Chrome Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Edge 2) Use HTTPS wherever possible When websites first started gaining traction, they worked on a protocol known as HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol). As time went on, there came the need for better security on the Internet, which brought about the last ‘S’ which stands for ‘Secure.’ Ever since it has always been the best thing to browse websites with https in their domain name rather than the old http. One thing you should always look out for is that extra ‘s.’ In fact, it is possible for you to access the unsecured form of a website which has a secure version, so keep an eye out for that too. Better still, download the ‘HTTPS Everywhere’ extension for your browser. That will force every we bite you visit to transmit over the secure channel, giving you more protection than before. 3) Stay Away from Public Wi-Fi Sometimes, the problem is not with the browser you are using. Likewise, the website you are accessing might not be at fault. That potential breach waiting to happen could just be a function of the kind of connection you are surfing the Internet with. Public Wi-Fi is almost everywhere you step into these days: Cafes, shops, parks, hospitals, airports… you name it. Since they usually come free, it is no surprise that many people prefer to use these networks when they have the chance. What you do not know is that you are exposing yourself too much for comfort. If you ever stopped to think about the true cost of free, public Wi-Fi networks, you would not want to pay it anymore. For one, the offerors of such networks (i.e. the shops, park operators, airports, etc.) can see all you do on the network and even record your Internet data. In the same vein, an experienced hacker can intercept your messages (man in the middle attacks), inject malware onto every computer connected to such a Wi-Fi network, and even steal sensitive information (bank login, passwords, etc.). 4) Manage your Cookies Better Cookies are supposed to be one of the best things that ever happened to web browsers. They are the tiny bits of code that keep you logged in to a website from the first time you visited. They do so much more than that: helping to keep your location preferences, language choices and other settings fixed on websites. Well, until advertisers and hackers got wind of what they could do with those cookies too. Now, advertisers can place a cookie on your browser when you visit their website. This cookie will track your activity throughout the Internet, collecting information on websites you visit. Hackers can use the same cookies to steal your passwords and record your key logs, among other things. While it is not advisable to get rid of all cookies (unless you don’t mind having to log in to every website every single time), you should keep track of the cookies your browser is storing. Keep the ones you need and discard the others. This might take extra time, but that is a small price to pay for your security. 5 Use a VPN Another sure-fire way to keep all prying eyes out is to always be connected througha secure VPN. If you have ever used a VPN before, you will know they are designed to change your IP address (computer’s location) without you having to change physical location. Thus, you can access the web from the US while being physically based in Australia, or anywhere else in the world. Following up the point on cookies, this feature of VPNs allows you keep your location anonymous if anyone were to be collecting your personal data. Speaking of data collection, a VPN also tunnels your Internet traffic through a massive array of servers whenever you connect to the Internet. This throws anyone following your trail off track, keeping you as anonymous as you would like to be. 6 Try Alternate forms of Payments The Internet has grown to the point where we can simply buy things and pay for them online. To make such payments, vendor websites will require your card details. Basically, your card details hold every information there is to know about you: your name, and access to your finances. That sounds like a hacker’s heaven. It is

Air pollution is killing construction workers

The British Safety Council has launched a campaign for air pollution to be officially recognised as an occupational health hazard for construction workers and others who worked outdoors. Among the measures it is calling for is the adoption of a workplace exposure limit for diesel engine exhaust emissions. Air pollution is linked with up to 36,000 early deaths a year in the UK. It is considered the biggest environmental risk to public health. Research from King’s College London suggests that more than 9,400 people die prematurely due to poor air quality in London alone. Ambient air pollution is linked to cancer, lung and heart disease, type-2 diabetes, infertility and early dementia. The British Safety Council has launched a report ‘Impact of air pollution on the health of outdoor workers’ which provides evidence to recognise ambient air pollution as an occupational health hazard in Britain. In the report, the charity presents the demands that spearhead its campaign to limit the dangers of air pollution to the health of outdoor workers. Several pilot schemes are beginning to monitor and measure the levels of air pollution experienced by people working and living in London. Their findings will be instrumental in developing recommendations for reducing people’s exposure to air pollution in the capital.  However, the government and regulatory bodies such as the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) continue to show a lack of interest in regulation and guidance on air pollution, the British Safety Council says.  In March 2019, the council launched its Time to Breathe campaign, which is focused on the protection of outdoor workers from air pollution. The cornerstone of the campaign is Canairy, a mobile app that gives outdoor workers and their employers insights into pollution and how to reduce staff exposure to it. It has been created in co-operation with King’s College London. Canairy draws on the London Air Quality Network (LAQN) pollution map at King’s and the user’s GPS to calculate an individual’s exposure to pollution on an hourly basis.  The new report ‘Impact of air pollution on the health of outdoor workers’ is the next step in the campaign. It gathers available evidence about the causes and consequences of air pollution in Britain. It also reviews international examples of initiatives set up to measure air pollution in different locations and their recommendations for risk reduction.

HSE INSPECTIONS TO TARGET CONSTRUCTION FIRM DUST CONTROL PRACTICE

Firms across Great Britain are to be targeted in a new series of inspections focusing on dust control by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), it has been announced today. Over the next few weeks, HSE will be concentrating on industries such as construction where occupational lung diseases, including in some cases occupational cancers, are more common. Inspectors will be visiting businesses across the country to see what measures have been put in place to protect workers’ lungs from the likes of asbestos, silica, wood, and flour dust. They will be looking for evidence of businesses and their workers knowing the risks, planning their work and using the right controls. Where necessary, HSE will use enforcement to make sure people are protected. HSE’s Chief Medical Officer, Professor David Fishwick said: “Exposure to asbestos, silica, wood, flour and other dust can have life-changing consequences. “Each year work-related lung diseases linked to past exposures are estimated to kill 12,000 workers across Great Britain. In many cases these diseases take a long time to develop after exposure, so the damage done may not be immediately obvious. Others, such as occupational asthma and acute silicosis, can occur more quickly. “These conditions can and do have a significant impact on both the individuals affected and those closest to them, so it is imperative that workers take the necessary precautions to protect their lungs.” Sarah Jardine, HSE’s Chief Inspector of Construction said:“We are carrying out this series of inspections to ensure businesses are fulfilling their legal duties to protect workers from harm. This includes controlling the levels of dust in workplaces. “We want to ensure employers and their workers are aware of the risks associated with any task that produces dust. Such work needs to be properly planned and use the right controls, such as water suppression, extraction and masks. “The bottom line is we want everyone, workers and their employers, to be protected from harm and ill health so they can go home healthy to their families.”
