Abloy UK and HKC showcase digital security innovation at The Security Event 2025

Abloy UK and HKC successfully showcased their market-leading digital access solutions and intelligent intruder alarm systems at The Security Event 2025, held at the NEC Birmingham. The three-day exhibition attracted thousands of security professionals from across the UK, Ireland, and beyond to explore the latest innovations in security and smart building management. With the growing convergence of physical security and digital technologies, the event provided an ideal platform for Abloy and HKC to demonstrate how their integrated systems support safer, smarter, and more sustainable buildings. Visitors to the stand engaged with live product demos, received expert insights, and explored how to adopt digital connected systems with confidence. Pip Courcoux, Technical and Product Director at Abloy UK, commented: “As buildings become smarter and the demand for seamless, secure movement increases, digital access is no longer a luxury – it’s essential. “Buildings are rapidly becoming digital environments, and access control plays a key role in enabling that transformation. From commercial offices to critical infrastructure, the need for flexible and scalable access management is growing rapidly. “We were delighted to connect with customers, consultants, and industry leaders at The Security Event 2025 to share how our solutions – including PROTEC2 CLIQ and PRIMO – can support their journey to smarter, more secure, and more sustainable operations.” Abloy UK’s portfolio on display included its comprehensive range of electromechanical and wireless locking systems, software platforms for access management, and cloud-based solutions that enable secure, real-time control of doors, cabinets, and gates – even in remote or high-risk environments. Damian Lloyd, Marketing Lead at HKC, echoed this, highlighting the rapid evolution of intruder detection systems in the digital age: “Over the past decade, the security landscape has undergone a major transformation – driven in large part by the evolution of intruder alarm connectivity. “Technological advancements have reshaped industry attitudes, prompting a shift in how alarm systems are designed, installed, and maintained. Modern alarm systems are now smarter, more integrated, and significantly more reliable than earlier generations. Innovations in wireless communication, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things (IoT) have all contributed to this progress. “These technologies have ushered in a new era, enabling real-time insights, effortless remote access, and a greatly enhanced user experience. The Security Event was the ideal opportunity for us to discuss this topic with visitors face-to-face, demonstrating how our HKC solutions can be tailored for residential, commercial, and vertical specific environments.” HKC’s stand featured its latest range of intruder alarm panels, wireless sensors, app-controlled systems, and cloud management tools – all designed with installers and end-users in mind. The company’s integrated approach aligns with today’s demand for security systems that not only detect but also deter and inform. On Thursday 3 April at Manchester’s Kimpton Clocktower, the BCO’s annual Northern Awards recognised projects that demonstrate best practice in office design, fit-out, operation and sustainability, setting the standard for excellence across the diverse sector. The BCO Regional Award winners in each category for the North were: Highly Commended workplaces were: The BCO Northern Awards judging panel was chaired by Adam Tillis, Operations Director of Dragonfly Contracts, alongside Nathalie Baxter, Head of Workspace (Strategy) at the Home Group; Danielle Ford, Associate Director at GenNorth; Lee Treanor, Director at HBD; Richmal Wigglesworth, Associate Partner at Sheppard Robson. Commenting on each of the winners, the BCO judges noted: Winner in the Projects up to 2,500 sqm category, Henry Boot Group’s (HBG) new headquarters at Isaacs Building, Sheffield, is a workplace transformation that exemplifies modern, flexible, and sustainable design. The judges noted: ‘This relocation from the historic Banner Cross Hall represents a significant cultural shift, fostering collaboration and innovation. Sustainability was central to the project, which achieved a BREEAM Very Good rating and reducing carbon emissions by 79%. By aligning workplace strategy with HBG’s net-zero 2030 goal, the new headquarters enhances employee engagement, boosts productivity, and sets a benchmark for sustainable workspaces. This forward-thinking approach solidifies HBG’s reputation as a leader in progressive workplace design and environmental responsibility.’ As Refurbished/Recycled Workplace of the Year, the Foundation redevelopment in Altrincham is an award-winning transformation, repurposing the former Rackhams department store into a dynamic hub for work, leisure, and community engagement. Judges noted that the project revitalises the town centre, providing a new gateway with modern offices, co-working spaces, retail, and dining: ‘Foundation sets a new benchmark for urban regeneration, proving that adaptive reuse can drive long-term economic and social impact.’ Deloitte’s office at 100 Embankment, Salford, was named champion in the Fit Out of Workplace category. Judges said: ‘This award-winning office exemplifies innovation, sustainability, and inclusivity, setting new benchmarks for hybrid working environments. The 6,085 sqm space is designed to foster collaboration, flexibility, and well-being, incorporating cutting-edge technology, sustainable materials, and dynamic workspaces. Judges said: ‘The 115,000 sq ft transformation redefines modern workspace design, prioritising innovation, sustainability, and employee well-being. The fit-out seamlessly blends biophilia, advanced technology, and flexible work environments. Key features include a fully landscaped courtyard and an open-plan entrance, eliminating a traditional reception to create a more welcoming atmosphere. With collaborative workspaces, wellness facilities, inspiring art installations, and Net Zero Carbon strategies achieving an EPC A rating, this project sets a new benchmark for contemporary workplace excellence.’ A double winner in the ESG and Commercial Workplace categories, Eden in Salford was highly praised by the BCO judges: ‘Eden is a groundbreaking, award-winning office development that sets a new standard for sustainable workplaces. This 12-storey, Net Zero Carbon building features Europe’s largest living wall – an astonishing 3,300m² of greenery with 350,000 plants, redefining urban biodiversity. As the UK’s first 5.5-star NABERS UK Design Reviewed project, alongside BREEAM Outstanding and EPC A ratings, it proves that commercial spaces can be both high-performance and environmentally responsible. Beyond sustainability, Eden’s social impact is equally transformative; it prioritises well-being, offering a vibrant social hub including local business Spice & Grind, wellness spaces, and a rooftop terrace.’ Oldham Spindles was given the Innovation award for its groundbreaking, adaptive reuse of a building that has transformed a struggling 1990s shopping centre into a vibrant, multi-functional workplace and community hub. Judges commented: ‘Oldham Spindles is an innovative project that reimagines urban regeneration, proving that underutilised retail spaces can be repurposed for modern office environments. It sets a bold precedent for repurposing failing retail assets into thriving workspaces. A combination of architectural ingenuity, sustainability, and social impact makes it a worthy recipient of the BCO Innovation Award, showcasing a transformative model for urban regeneration.’ Alex Stork, Regional Committee Chair for the BCO, said: ‘This year’s BCO Northern Awards winners exemplify excellence in office design. These outstanding workspaces demonstrate how innovative strategies in well-being, sustainability, and community engagement can create remarkable commercial environments where people take pride in working. ‘The North continues to lead with some of the most exciting office developments, fuelled by collaborations between forward-thinking organisations, local authorities, and expert design and build specialists. Our judges were highly impressed by the exceptional quality of submissions this year. We extend our congratulations to the winners and those highly commended, and we eagerly anticipate the ongoing growth of the region’s office landscape.’ The Northern region winners will now compete for the BCO National Awards in October 2025. Global Safety and Health construction coordinators unite at APS/ISHCCO Edinburgh congress

Global Safety and Health construction coordinators unite at APS/ISHCCO Edinburgh congress

The Association for Project Safety (APS) and the International Safety and Health Construction Coordinators Organization (ISHCCO) recently hosted a landmark international congress in Edinburgh, bringing together construction safety experts from across Europe. The gathering focused on raising competency standards, tackling emerging risks, and strengthening global collaboration in construction health and safety co-ordination. The event provided a platform for leading professionals to discuss the latest regulatory updates, technological advancements, global challenges, building a resilient future and best practices in safety coordination. The key themes discussed included issues around competence and compliance in a Post-Grenfell Landscape. Indeed, with building safety regulations tightening, discussions focused on how Safety and Health Construction Coordinators (SHCCs) – including UK Principal Designers (PDs) and Principal Contractors (PCs) – must adapt to ensure improved safety standards. There were also discussions around New and Emerging Risks – beyond known hazards such as asbestos and silica, the event highlighted new occupational risks and the impact of climate change on construction safety. Speakers at the Congress also reinforced the role of technology, particularly on how digital innovation – BIM and emerging technologies, can enhance health and safety processes and improve risk management. Other themes discussed included introducing more collaboration between ISHCCO and International Social Security Association – Construction Section (ISSA-C) to tackle Global Challenges, building a resilient future by climate-proofing design infrastructure (European Council of Civil Engineers (ECCE) Manifesto) and measuring performance in a bid to improving safety outcomes to benefit long-term industry improvements. As a founder member of ISHCCO, APS has a long-standing commitment to improving health and safety coordination in the UK and Europe.  The joint Congress underlined the importance of sharing best practices and fostering international collaboration to advance construction safety. Andrew Leslie, Chief Executive, APS commented: “APS was formed by consequence of EU Directive 92/57 which impacted on all EU Member States.  Despite the UK decision to leave the EU, APS recognises the importance of sharing good practice and research and development with our ISHCCO colleagues, particularly as many design and construction goods and services are now delivered on an international basis.” Evangelitsa Tsoulofta, ISHCCO President, added: “ISHCCO’s vision, as the umbrella organization of safety and health construction coordinators in Europe and Worldwide, is to affirm its members’ professional identity and collaborate with OSH and construction professionals and institutions for a safer, healthier, and sustainable construction industry and infrastructure. “Promoting construction OSH, we not only protect the lives and well-being of construction workers but also contribute to the sustainability of our industry, infrastructure, and society.  I extend an invitation to all OSH and construction professionals to join ISHCCO in this noble mission, and I look forward to working together to build a better future for all. “Building on the success of Edinburgh 2024, our Spanish colleagues will host the next ISHCCO General Assembly and Congress in Madrid in 2025, further strengthening ties between European safety coordinators.” For more details visit www.ishcco.org and www.aps.org.uk

The official UKREiiF After Party: Regeneration Brainery DJ Battle 2025, ‘The Spin City Showdown’ of the UKs Metro Mayors

The official UKREiiF After Party: Regeneration Brainery DJ Battle 2025, ‘The Spin City Showdown’ of the UKs Metro Mayors

The UK’s metro mayors will battle it out on the decks for an iconic night of head-to-head musical entertainment at this year’s UKREiiF. Powered by Capital & Centric, the first Regeneration Brainery DJ Battle will take place at the O2 Academy Leeds, one of the country’s most popular music venues, on 21 May 2025. For one night only, the mayors will deliver spinbacks not speeches, regional rivalries will be tested, and the only fiery debate will be whether house is better than techno.  Ticketholders can expect a dazzling production, an all-star lineup of mayors-turned-DJs, and an electrifying clash of styles, from disco anthems to indie classics. This will be an evening where politics takes a backseat, and the musical talents of the nation’s regional leaders are revealed. This landmark event will raise money for UKREiiF’s official charity partner Regeneration Brainery.  All monies raised from ticket sales will go towards Regeneration Brainery’s continuing support of more than 6,000 young people from under-represented backgrounds, enabling them to gain hands-on experience in the property and regeneration industry.   Regeneration Brainery’s national social mobility programme offers in-depth insights into the property industry, through workshops, work experience, and opportunities to connect with inspirational mentors. “Brainees” develop crucial employability skills, with over a third of participants now in the industry.  With a crowd-powered vote, the audience will be the ones to decide who destroyed the dance floor with their powerful beats, and who should stick to their day job.   At only £20 a ticket, The Regeneration Brainery DJ Battle 2025 will be an event not to miss, where the power is in the playlist and the audience will decide which of the mayors is worthy of following in the footsteps of The Stone Roses, The Killers, and Robbie Williams in taking to the O2 Academy stage. Matt Christie, Director UKREiiF, said:  “We cannot wait for a night that will go down in industry folklore, one where we get to witness our regional leaders showcase their hidden talents. It’s going to be a special evening, featuring several special guests, raising money for an incredible organisation that UKREiiF is proud to support as its charity partner. I have my guesses who will emerge victorious, but I can’t wait to see who the audience decides is champion of this battle.”  Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals
