Local housebuilder raises £16,000 for Young Lives vs Cancer, as part of ongoing partnership

Local housebuilder raises £16,000 for Young Lives vs Cancer, as part of ongoing partnership

Local housebuilder Crest Nicholson’s Chiltern division recently hosted a charity ball in aid of Young Lives vs Cancer, raising an amazing £16,000 over the evening to help those fighting cancer, and their families. Hundreds of people from across the housebuilding industry gathered at The Crowne Plaza Hotel in Marlow on the 26th January for a gorgeous black tie event in aid of Young Lives vs Cancer. The event was hosted by comedian Paul Sinha. Throughout the night, money was donated through raffles and a guest speaker, Patience, took to the stage to share her story about her son Jeremy, his cancer journey, and how Young Lives vs Cancer supported them throughout his treatment, so he could battle through. As a business, Crest Nicholson has now raised over £100,000 for its charity partner, in addition to volunteering its time and expertise to support with hands-on projects, such as repair work to Young Lives’ Homes away from Home. Charlie Joseph, Sales and Marketing Director at Crest Nicholson Chiltern, comments: “Thank you to everyone who attended our charity ball and who contributed to the money raised via purchasing entry tickets, raffle tickets or making additional donations. The event was a huge success not only in the money raised but was a great way to raise awareness and for everyone to find out more about the impact the charity has on young people and their families. “Looking ahead, we hope to build on our partnership with Young Lives through more sponsorships, events, challenges, and hands-on projects, in the hope that the charity can support even more young people and their families at what is an incredibly difficult time in their lives.” Young Lives Vs Cancer helps children and young people, and their families, find the strength to face whatever cancer throws at them. The charity has Homes from Home, located close to hospitals and principal treatment centres where children have treatment, so at a time when families should only have to focus on their child or young person’s treatment, they can stay close to them, keeping families together at a difficult time. The charity has 11 Homes across the UK including Paul’s House and Ciaran’s house, helping families to avoid the extra financial burden of travel, accommodation, and food whilst their child is completing their treatment. The Homes, and the charity more broadly, works to ensure families are as comfortable as possible and can experience at least a bit of normalcy whilst they are away for cancer treatment. Apprentices tackling national skills gap and housing shortage recognised by Britain’s fastest bricklayer at NHBC apprenticeship graduation in Milton Keynes

Apprentices tackling national skills gap and housing shortage recognised by Britain’s fastest bricklayer at NHBC apprenticeship graduation in Milton Keynes

The UK’s fastest bricklayer has praised the talents of more than one hundred apprentices at the National House Building Council’s (NHBC) latest graduation ceremony in Milton Keynes. Held at the UK’s leading warranty and insurance providers NHBC Headquarters in Knowlhill, Milton Keynes, on Friday 16 February 2024, YouTube sensation and Super Trowels Bricklaying Competition winner, Charlie Collison, said apprentices are key to the housing industry’s future and urged more people to consider a career in the sector. “What NHBC and its national network of bricklaying hubs is achieving is vital if we’re going to close the skills gap and housing shortage we are facing,” Charlie said. “Each NHBC Training Hub across the country is enabling 100 apprentices to be trained by experienced tutors each year, enabling house builders to create a flow of new talent onto sites. It’s a great start to begin to address the skills gap in house building, the impact of which cannot be underestimated. The research is showing the need for an additional 225,000 construction workers in the UK by 2027 – that’s a staggering 45,000 per year. “When this is considered alongside recent reports that builders are struggling to recruit bricklayers, it becomes clear just how important it is for the house-building industry to attract more people from all backgrounds to bricklaying. It also highlights how significant it is to have so many accomplished bricklayers here with us today,” Charlie said. Amongst those recognised was Jack Hart, 17, Leicestershire, bricklaying apprentice who trained at NHBC’s Training Hub in Tamworth. Jack, who passed with a distinction was today awarded NHBC Apprentice Bricklayer of the Year. Jack said a career in the housing industry offers so many opportunities. “Training at the NHBC Training Hub, meant I had leading experts teaching me real on-site experience from just five weeks in and my apprenticeship was completed in just 18 months. That’s a standout difference compared to 30 months which it can take through more traditional routes,” said Jack. “I would recommend an apprenticeship at one of NHBC’s Training Hubs as it’s a great way to learn. I’ve not only gained bricklaying skills, but I’ve expanded my people skills and learnt a lot about communication. I knew I wanted to learn about bricklaying so the opportunity to do this while also still earning money was really attractive to me. People are often surprised to learn the average bricklayer earns 50 thousand pounds a year. An apprenticeship in bricklaying is a pathway to a really well-paid and greatly varied career in the housebuilding industry. I’d encourage everyone to consider it. Since becoming a registered apprenticeship provider in 2020, around 450 people have progressed through NHBC’s Bricklaying Training Hubs. Also recognised at the ceremony were students studying with NHBC for apprenticeships in Construction Site Supervision and various other housebuilding roles. Stephanie Black, 23, Northampton, was awarded NHBC’s Construction Site Supervisor Apprentice of the Year. Stephanie said: “An apprenticeship in house building is for everyone!” We must attract the widest pool of talent and people from all backgrounds to take up an apprenticeship in the house-building industry to help address the nationwide skills gap and housing shortage. I took on such a varied, interesting and demanding apprenticeship, and have gained such extensive knowledge and expertise in a wide variety of topics. I’m looking forward to what I hope to be a great career ahead which offers many opportunities and makes a real difference.” Darryl Stewart, responsible for NHBC’s apprentice training programme and training hubs, said, it’s encouraging to see people entering a career in housebuilding but there’s still more to do. “In recent years, house builders have found it more challenging to recruit people for a range of reasons. It’s an industry which is facing an ageing workforce and has been seen as a career path mainly for men.  This means we must continue to find ways to encourage people from all walks of life to join the sector as it offers a fantastic range of careers and an apprenticeship in the house-building industry is a pathway into a rewarding and well-paid career that can make a real difference. “At NHBC, our apprenticeships and training programmes and our growing network of national NHBC Training Hubs, are getting more people started in the industry and helping to close the skills gap by training the next generation of house builders. Our house-building apprenticeships are an excellent alternative to the more traditional educational routes with our courses designed with input from across the industry and leading experts. It’s fantastic to see this latest cohort today of over 100 apprentices being equipped with skills for life which they can take forward and use to build high-quality new homes. NHBC’s apprenticeships are for everyone and we’re delighted to see people from all backgrounds coming through, including women, career changers, diverse cultures and school leavers wanting to work in house building. It’s never too late to learn a new skill!” Darryl said. Keon Homes brings in 2024 with £28m of new deals

Keon Homes has sealed a quartet of new land deals worth over £28m to get 2024 off to a flying start. One of the fastest growing developers of affordable housing and Extra Care schemes has built on a record-breaking 2023 by unlocking three crucial sites in Coventry, Nuneaton and Wolverhampton that will see it build a 150-strong mixture of houses and apartments. The Burntwood-based company, which has taken on 14 new people to cope with the increase in demand, has also agreed its first partnership with Birmingham Municipal Housing Trust. This will see it construct 65 new homes, a sports pavilion and football pitches for the community as part of the Local Authorities “Our Future City” plans. Matt Beckley, Head of Development at Keon Homes, commented: “These latest deals underline our ability to find land, securing planning and then, using strong relationships with housing associations, develop schemes that makes a real difference to local people. “The region is crying out for more affordable housing, and, with these recent wins, we are now programmed to start eight sites this year, delivering 300 new homes in total. “This will include working with our existing partners, such as Midland Heart and Walsall Housing Group, not to mention first projects for the Black Country Housing Group, Birmingham Municipal Housing Trust and Citizen Housing.” He continued: “This is more just than bricks and mortar. We are using the latest construction techniques and the strength of our local supply chain to regenerate brownfield sites into communities where individuals, couples and families can enjoy living.” 2023 was a transformational year for Keon Homes, with the company celebrating its 5th birthday and securing its first two Extra Care schemes. This started with a £15m deal with Wrekin Housing Group to deliver a scheme of 70 properties and a host of communal facilities. Situated just a ten-minute walk into Newport, Queenswood is set to provide high quality living space and wraparound care and support for people over the age of 55, offering a mix of one and two-bed apartments, private gardens, and a café. This was quickly followed by the £28m ‘Streethay’ development in Lichfield with Sanctuary Group, a project that will see the company build 138 plots in total, comprising 60 bungalows and a 78-bed Extra Care scheme. Matt went on to add: “Our mission is all about ‘Doing the Right Thing’ and that flows throughout the business, from the way we treat our staff and the way we develop our supply chains to the way we forge exceptionally strong partnerships with Housing Associations and our other client partners. “This has seen us successfully complete 14 sites and 400 plots in just five years, with a secured £103m pipeline of deals in place. Importantly, in the most recent Best Workplaces List survey, 100% of Keon Homes employees stated that we are a great place to work.” Warren Bolton, Director at Keon Homes, concluded: “Our sector is experiencing a raft of challenges and there will be some casualties this year. That is why we are seeing strong demand for our services, as we have strong financial backing and a proven track record of delivering high quality affordable housing and extra care schemes.” For further information, please visit www.keonhomes.co.uk or follow Keon Homes on its social channels. Family traditions, modern visions: three apprentices build generational legacies in construction

Family traditions, modern visions: three apprentices build generational legacies in construction

Three young joiners are following in their relatives’ footsteps to build successful careers in construction thanks to their Apprenticeship schemes with Harron Homes. This National Apprenticeship Week (5th-11th), the apprentices are calling for other young people to consider this route into the industry. Harron Homes’ passion for building quality homes means the business is keen to get apprentices stuck in with practical on-site work as soon as possible. Wickersley-born Bradley Panks, aged 20, is currently undertaking the second year of his joinery apprenticeship. His grandfather also works in the construction sector, and Bradley was inspired to follow in his footsteps by embarking on the apprenticeship scheme. The level 2 Joinery diploma operates as a ‘day-release course,’ with work at Harron Homes North Midlands’ De Maulay Manor site in Doncaster balanced with one day per week spent at Rotherham College. The course, which is studied over three years, is designed to equip people new to the industry with all the crucial skills for the job. “Harron is great because they had me working on site really quickly,” says Bradley. “College is useful, but there are some on-site scenarios that a college course simply can’t predict. Being able to get some real-time experience has significantly benefited my progress, and it’s also improved my confidence. In Nottinghamshire, at Harron Homes’ The Brambles development in Retford, Kieran Armes, 17, is in his first year of an apprenticeship with Harron Homes North Midlands. Kieran is also on a day-release course, studying at Nottingham College. Kieran’s father Paul works in construction and has been an inspiration to the young apprentice. A Nottinghamshire local himself, Kieran has settled right in to his joinery apprenticeship.  “I think one of the most beneficial aspects of the whole thing is that you learn your way around problems in real time,” says Kieran. “Getting to grips with that kind of situation requires practice within an unpredictable and busy environment, which is what the apprenticeship provides.   “I’m proud to become a part of the build process and would encourage anyone considering an apprenticeship to go for it.” In Huddersfield, at Harron’s Highfield Manor development in Fixby, 17-year-old Connor Simpson has started his three-year joinery apprenticeship, with one day per week spent at Leeds College of Building. Like Kieran, Connor is also following in the footsteps of his father Daniel, who is a Site Carpenter for Harron Homes, and the father and son often work together as a team. The apprentices building a career, the companies finding the skills

The apprentices building a career, the companies finding the skills

This week is National Apprenticeship Week, a celebration that brings together businesses and apprentices across the country to shine a light on the the positive impact that apprenticeships make them and the wider economy. We met two on a building site at Barratt Homes Bristol  Two years ago, Alex Biruls was selling cars. He’d left school not really knowing what he wanted for his future and spent the next three years taking roles in a supermarket and then the motor trade. But, while he was at it, he discovered and developed skills and confidence that shaped a desire to ‘go back to school and learn more’, an interest in surveying and a pathway into the construction industry, in his case with Barratt Homes in Bristol.  Today, at just 26, he’s picked up a Level 4 HNC and is studying (part time) for a degree at Sheffield University to become a Quantity Surveyor. Both courses are fully funded. Ambassadors of apprenticeships have long fought to see them on an equal footing with other qualifications and recognised as a prestigious option that meets the skills needs of employers across the country.  Crucially, they’ve advocated the pathway for students who don’t want or aren’t suited to full time academic study so they can enjoy an alternative route into their chosen career. This week – National Apprenticeship Week [ed note hyperlink if required at https://naw.appawards.co.uk/] – is celebrating and showcasing their success in doing that, with stories across the sectors – from accounting to agriculture, the creative industries to construction – looking at how the schemes deliver skills for life.  “We’ve seen and celebrated so many of our team training and taking on key roles in Barratt thanks to apprenticeship training,” says Andrea Pilgrim, sales director at Barratt Homes Bristol. “At the moment we have both Construction Graduate Apprentices (a five year programme) and Trade Apprentices (in areas like Bricklaying and Carpentry) and we know, like the organisers of this awareness week, that the opportunity to learn while you earn, to combine study with skills training on the job among a team of trained professionals,  is absolutely the best route for some people and never a ‘second best’ option. It brings so many benefits, not least allowing people to learn while they earn with colleagues established in the industry.”  “I think I was lucky,” says Alex Biruls today. “My parents were ambitious for me but there was no pressure – they wanted me to find something that was right for my future. But nothing was wasted during those early exploratory jobs – they showed me what I was good at (skills like negotiation, customer service) and gave me chance to explore careers and find one that was right for me.  “Now it all seems like a no brainer,” adds Alex. “The surveyors I work with are fantastic, and this role allows me to be part of a bigger team building something special for communities. Learning while doing a job makes me more enthusiastic about my study, and the study is absolutely relevant to my day-to-day work.”  Alex’s degree course is delivered in residential blocks up in Sheffield.  “So I can be in a technical lecture one week learning about, say, timber frame construction and the materials involved, and then I am back on site the next with a real understanding of what I am seeing and the methods we’re using,” he says. “And I have a mentor to monitor and support me all the way. I was a chatterbox at school, but now I am a bit of a bookworm. I am really invested in this role and know what the outcome and future might look like. And, while I study, I am part of a team building these new, more efficient than ever houses and communities and I find it really fascinating. Even developing the playgrounds on the developments is special. The attention to detail – the landscaping, flooring and more – to deliver a positive experience for families is really exciting to see and be a part of.” Finn Tucker, 16, will be one of the apprentices working on those timber framed houses Alex describes. Growing up in a household with a dad who is a self-employed plumber and a brother who is a bricklayer, he knew he wanted a physical, hands on, out-in-the-fresh-air practical job and says learning while he earns is brilliant.  “It was the practical stuff I’d loved at school – design, technology, sports – and because I was doing okay there was some pressure to go onto A Levels and there were several options presented to me, like mechanics or sport. But I really wanted to be a carpenter, was focused on and loved woodwork,  and I am so glad I made this choice.  “The role I am in and the course I am taking feels so different from learning in a classroom or even doing practical projects in a college workshop. Carpentry here covers everything you can imagine – the doors, the floors, the roof – and I am part of a team who are teaching me every day while I work with them.  It’s hard work, but none of it – the work or the study (via two-week college placements) ever feels like a chore. I have a mentor based at the college who visits me on site.  And, crucially, I am learning fast that when you enjoy something you feel like you can achieve anything. It makes you hungry to learn more.” Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals
