Mayplas adds new passive fire, acoustic and thermal products to housebuilder range

Mayplas, a specialist in passive fire protection, acoustic and thermal insulation for the housebuilding industry, has introduced three new products.  The new Thermal Eaves Batt, Party Wall Head Cap System and Therma Soffit add to Mayplas’ comprehensive portfolio of products for timber and masonry frame applications. The new Mayplas Thermal Eaves Batt provides a thermal barrier at the interface between the ceiling loft space and the external wall of new build homes.  Comprising two main components, an eaves tray and a stone mineral wool insulation batt, the batt prevents cold spots and reduces heat loss while providing a clear air path between the roofing membrane and insulation to avoid condensation.  The batt is suitable for roof pitches up to 45°. The new Party Wall Head System provides fire protection compartmentation at the party wall junction.  Installed together as per Mayplas’ Installation Guide, the two-component system – a party wall head cap and a tile batten barrier, achieves 60 minutes fire integrity and insulation tested to the principles of EN 1363-1:2012 and EOTA TR31:2008 and independently assessed in accordance with BS 476-20:1987 and BS 476-22:1987.  The system addresses Building Regulations requirements to maintain the continuity of fire resistance between a compartment party wall and the underside of the roof covering, so preventing the spread of fire and smoke. Mayplas’ third new product also works at the party wall junction.  The Therma Soffit provides thermal insulation within the soffit. It is available in two thicknesses, 100mm and 150mm, facilitating required thermal resistance values (Approved Document L) and providing resistance to the passage of sound synonymous with stone mineral wool insulation (Approved Document E). The new building, consisting of a classroom, office space, changing rooms and a storage area, will provide additional room to support the school’s outdoor education programme. King Edward VI Five Ways School is a highly regarded secondary school that prides itself on fostering academic excellence and personal growth in its students. Outdoor education is an integral part of the curriculum, designed to encourage exploration, cultivate responsibility and empower students to analyse and take risks. Students widely benefit from outdoor learning, clear evidence of which can be seen in a 2005 House of Commons report. The arrival of the new facility will make it easier for pupils to participate in more of these activities. Working with the appointed project managers, TRU Contracts, GCS Group identified a number of potential obstacles regarding installation. Namely, the site was compromised by the presence of ornamental pillars, large branches and a disused telephone wire. GCS Group was able to advise on these matters early in the project. One such solution was the use of a robot to tow the modules through areas where the presence of heavy vehicles could cause safety concerns. “The position of the classroom made it a challenging task. Access was very tight, along with restrictions for overhead cables.” Said the main contractor from TRU Contracts. “All these issues were dealt with at the early stages of the project, allowing for a fault-free installation. Hull and East Yorkshire Combined Authority to begin work

The long-awaited Hull and East Yorkshire Combined Authority can now officially begin its work after the final steps were taken by the Government to create the new body. The signing of the relevant order by the minister moves the area closer to unlocking a £400 million investment fund, alongside powers that will move from Westminster to local decision-makers. The Combined Authority will be led by an elected Mayor, with voters going to the polls on Thursday 1 May 2025. Elections will then take place every four years. The Combined Authority has been created after Hull City Council and East Riding of Yorkshire Council agreed a devolution deal with the Government. The Leader of Hull City Council, Councillor Mike Ross, said: “I’m delighted that we have got to this stage in the process after years of hard work by many people. “For too long our area has been left behind, but it’s now time for us to reach our full potential. “The creation of the Combined Authority unlocks vital empowerment and investment, and I believe we have the talent and drive to make the most of what devolution brings.” The Leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Councillor Anne Handley, said: “This is fantastic news and serves as a significant landmark in the devolution process. “It’s great to receive official confirmation that devolved powers will be coming to our area, with an elected mayor, and the ability to unlock investment and opportunities for our region.” Representatives from both councils will now put in place the necessary arrangements to operate the Combined Authority, including the delivery of May’s Mayoral election. The new Combined Authority does not replace either Hull City Council or East Riding of Yorkshire Council. Both local authorities will retain their independence and continue their work as normal. Residents will, for instance, still see council-branded bin wagons collect their household waste. The new Combined Authority will take on powers relating to transport, where it will become the Local Transport Authority for the area, allowing it to develop a single strategic transport plan for the North Bank of the Humber. GRAHAM completes M2 junction 5 improvements scheme in Kent

Civil engineering specialist GRAHAM is pleased to announce the successful completion and opening of the National Highways M2 junction 5 improvements scheme.  The project, which began in June 2021 was commissioned under the Road Investment Strategy (RIS 2), and has delivered a transformative upgrade to one of the UK’s busiest and previously most dangerous junctions, improving connectivity, safety, and traffic flow in the region. Located at the intersection of the M2 and A249 in Kent, the upgraded junction provides a critical link between the Isle of Sheppey, Maidstone, and the M20 motorway, which connects Dover to London and Sheerness.  With the improvements now completed, motorists will benefit from enhanced safety and smoother journeys, addressing long-standing concerns over congestion and accident risks. The project’s centrepiece is the new Stockbury flyover, a nearly mile-long structure that eliminates the need for traffic to interact with the heavily congested Stockbury roundabout.  The flyover, constructed using 1,500 bespoke Reinforced Earth RECO panels, features a design that blends with the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty by incorporating locally sourced flint and cobble.  The two bridges supporting the flyover were constructed using reinforced concrete beams, each weighing up to 56 tonnes, which were installed using a 450-tonne mobile crane during August and October 2023 without disrupting live traffic. In addition to the flyover, two new dedicated slip roads now provide direct access from the A249 to the M2, bypassing the Stockbury roundabout entirely to provide reduced congestion. A larger, redesigned gyratory system for the roundabout has also been created, with the removal of existing traffic lights, alongside the creation of a safer link road connecting Maidstone Road and Oad Street. Throughout the project, GRAHAM demonstrated its commitment to social value and community engagement. Efforts included construction aid for local facilities, volunteer days, and donations to charities such as Demelza Hospice, Maidstone Homeless Care, and Dandelion Time.  This approach earned the project full marks in the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS), reflecting their dedication to community involvement, workforce care, and environmental responsibility. Discussing the completion of the scheme, Dave Brown GRAHAM Contracts Director, remarked: “It is with great pride that we announce the successful completion of the M2 Junction 5 Improvements Scheme, which is a testament to the hard work, collaboration, and commitment of the entire team.
