London’s latest £85m district heating infrastructure is taking shape in Enfield and will be delivered by Vital Energi on behalf of energetik, the energy company owned by Enfield Council. The new district heating network will accommodate up to 30,000 homes and businesses, including the £6bn Meridian Water development. energetik want to revolutionise the local energy market and improve the reputation of district heating, in a currently unregulated market, to ensure customers receive a quality service. Vital Energi will design, build, operate and maintain the main energy centre for Meridian Water and install the district heating network over the next 12 years, under a contract worth £15m. This heat network is part of an integrated energy and regeneration strategy in Enfield that will interconnect with energetik’s other networks at Arnos Grove and Ponders End. Enfield Council is committed to cutting carbon emissions in the borough by 40% by 2020, and the carbon footprint of homes connected to the energetik network will be up to 80% less than homes with conventional heating. The scheme underpins Enfield’s regeneration ambitions for the future and will provide £225m of economic, environmental and social benefits to local residents and businesses whilst creating new jobs in the area. Rob Callaghan, Regional Director (London & South) for Vital Energi commented, “We are very excited to be working on a project of this magnitude in London. The US Customs and Border Protection is set to start constructing the very first segment of the Trump Border Wall in the month of November, going through a wildlife refuge with funding that was received from Congress. The news broke as an official from the US Fish and Wildlife Service discussed it with a NGO that is raising money for the support of 2 South Texas national wildlife refuges. It was reported that a 3 mile border barrier has been quietly planned in the past 6 months through Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, with soil testing and drilling also reportedly started in New Mexico and California. The construction of the wall was expected to start in January but the House did approve a $1.6 billion spending bill to build some pieces in California and Texas. CBP declared that although the Senate is not sure of this, it will shift own budgets in order to start the work on the segment. According to Carlos Diaz, Customs and Border Protection spokesman: “It would be premature to speak about specific locations.” He went on to say that the only projects that are now authorized are installing 35 gates that exist in the current border fence. The Santa Ana 2,088 acre refuge is one of the country’s most important bird watching sites housing over 400 species. Unfortunately, even if environmental damage would be substantial, the Department of Homeland Security is allowed to wave environmental regulations stopping construction in such sensitive wildlife areas. Democrats are expected to be unified in order to stop such a project. President Trump did make the border wall construction a signature promise and did make huge allegations about its construction, with costs being estimated as being a lot lower than what it would actually cost. While the wall was not mentioned much in recent months, the CBP did start a bidding contest in order to build models for the wall, with concrete and different alternative designs being allowed. Winners are expected to be announced in the month of November. According to The Luxury Team, building a border wall across the entire border with Mexico would be totally impossible and would cost so much more than what many expect, especially if concrete would be used. It seems that President Trump agrees with this and stated that the wall that should be built needs to be see-through, with parts of the border not having to be covered as it is protected by topography. Nothing is officially known about how President Trump will achieve the wall project, even at a lower scale version. Under President Obama administration the current fence, which is a really modest project, cost around $3.2 million per mile. The CBP announced that their entire yearly budget is $20 million. The Republican and Democratic lawmakers did not manage to come up with any feasible idea about how the wall would be paid. According to the Department Of Homeland Security, the entire cost would be $20 billion. The Mexican officials did vigorously reject all propositions about financing the construction.

New collaborations to boost consumer protection for gas customers Published: 23 March, 2016 Two government-backed schemes, TrustMark and Gas Safe Register, are working together to provide consumer protection services to registered gas engineers and their customers. As part of a year’s pilot, they will also be informing and educating gas engineers about the new consumer protection law and the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Regulations, which both came into force on 1 October 2015. With just over half of the complaints Gas Safe Register receives each year unrelated to gas safety issues, TrustMark and Gas Safe Register will pilot a scheme to help resolve these issues. This will involve TrustMark providing access to support services for non-technical complaints with an independent first-stage dispute handling and conciliation service. Gas Safe registered engineers will also be able to use TrustMark’s certificated ADR services, which will help customers and businesses with a clear, simple and low-cost dispute resolution alternative to formal legal action. In addition, gas engineers will have the opportunity to use TrustMark Escrow, a low-cost protection payment scheme to help protect their customers and themselves through a financial contract, and obtain trustworthy regulatory advice on any consumer issues relevant to their sector through TrustMark’s ‘assured advice’ with it’s Primary Authority partnership with Buckinghamshire and Surrey Trading Standards. Simon Ayers, chief executive of TrustMark, said: “The collaboration between TrustMark and Gas Safe Register will bring a greater strength to the existing gas scheme by providing support and advice to gas engineers about good customer service practice, consumer protection law and the ADR Regulations. We are looking forward to working together and providing extra consumer protection for the many registered gas engineers and their customers.” In addition to this news, the Welsh government has announced that it will be joining forces with Trustmark to promote its consumer protection service. The integrated marketing campaign – which coincides with TrustMark’s 10th anniversary – will target Welsh traders whose businesses can benefit from gaining accreditation and also raise awareness of the scheme amongst consumers in Wales. Economy Minister Edwina Hart said: “We have all heard harrowing cases of rogue traders and incompetent operators working in the home repair, maintenance and improvement market causing great distress, disruption and financial loss for many home owners. TrustMark was established to eliminate poor practice in this sector and helps householders find reputable local tradespeople who have been vetted and inspected to work on their properties. It covers the full range of trades in and around the home and acts as a signpost to help householders find local firms and expert tradespeople, providing them with choice, confidence and protection.” Source link

It said that the decision was particularly significant in the capital where large numbers of construction workers are paid just £7.20 an hour compared to the London Living Wage of £9.40 an hour. Ucatt regional secretary Jerry Swain said “I commend Land Securities for their decision to introduce the Living Wage. House & Garden is known for being a magazine publication, in order to expand into furniture, a partnership has been formed with Arlo & Jacob. This collaboration has taken place in celebration of the magazine’s 70th anniversary and the new collection will be on display at the Decorex International 2017 show. The furniture featured in the collection has been designed to deliver elegant and comfortable furniture that is reasonably priced in order to make the collection accessible to as many of their readers and other interested parties as possible. Arlo & Jacob is a designer that has been established for a number of years and uses their expansive history in order to create their high quality furniture. The new collaborative furniture collection has been inspired by the English countryside. Within the designs for the furniture, there is an emphasis on comfort that has been merged with style and a delicate design. The collection includes six elegant designs that can also be personalised by the client. The collection consists of three different sofas, two chairs and a footstool. Each of the pieces that make up this new House & Garden and Arlo & Jacob collection can be upholstered any of a collection of 20 fabrics. Construction work on a retail site on the outskirts of Penzance was stopped very suddenly when the main contractor for the project ceased trading with immediate effect. Recently the former contractor, Wieser Construction released news that they were in liquidation. On the 31st of July the contractor was apparently advised by DC Business recovery to cease trading with immediate effect. The contractor had a winding-up petition issued against them and HSBC the business account provider of Wieser froze the contractor’s bank account after an audit flagged up a number of discrepancies. The company was advised that it would be best to apply for Voluntary Administration. All staff have been made redundant as a part of this Voluntary Administration process. The Developer Consolidated Property Group announced that they would be beginning the development on the Cornish site in October. The plan is to create a 15,800 sq. ft. retail site which would include a number of popular chain names such as Pets At Home and Poundland. Also on the site there will the first Costa drive-thru to open in Cornwall. This development, could bring 18 new jobs to the area. According to the developers, a contractor has already been found to continue the development in the place of Wieser Construction. Due to the speed in appointing a new contractor, the development is still expected to be complete before the end of 2017. It is thought that this hiccup has in fact had very little impact on the schedule of this construction work, with the shops expected to be open in the Autumn. Initially the schedule of works had the development complete at the end of the summer or towards the end of the year, therefore the developer’s estimation shows that the need to replace the contractor has had little to no impact on the projected time period of this build.
