New Apprentice Cohort Joins Caddick Construction

New Apprentice Cohort Joins Caddick Construction

Caddick Construction Group is ramping up its investment in the future workforce with the recruitment of seven new apprentices and two new trainees, boosting the Group’s provision of work-based learning across the North West, North East, Yorkshire and Midlands. The new recruits include Apprentice Quantity Surveyor (QS), Isabelle Roberts, who first gained hands-on work experience at Caddick Construction Group’s Farrington Park project in Lancashire. Isabelle has now embarked on a 5-year Quantity Surveying degree with the University of Central Lancashire, attending university one day a week and spending the remaining four days with the site team at Progress Housing Group’s £23m extra care development in Lancaster. Orlando Wilson, one of Caddick’s new Construction Trainees, recently joined the business on a five-year Construction Management degree. Working across a number of Yorkshire developments, including a new £28m scheme for YARA Fertiliser, Orlando is now gaining valuable skills in various different departments at Caddick, whilst also studying for his degree at Leeds Beckett University one day a week.  Working in the Caddick Construction team alongside Isabelle and Orlando is Brandon Crowther as Apprentice Engineer, Rob Knowles as Apprentice Quantity Surveyor, George Reynolds Winstanley as Trainee Site Manager, Evie Belwood as Apprentice Quantity Surveyor and Oliver Fauguel as Apprentice Engineer. Caddick Civil Engineering has also been joined by Apprentice Site Manager, Harvey Fenton, and Trainee Quantity Surveyor, Harry Webster, who will support the business’ growing pipeline of residential and public sector contracts. The nine join Caddick Construction Group’s expanding team of work-based learners, bringing the business’ total number of apprentices and trainees to 23.  Working across the Caddick Construction Group’s key regions, the new recruits will gain first-hand experience of live construction projects in a variety of sectors, including residential, offices, manufacturing, healthcare and retail.  Of her apprenticeship, Isabelle commented: “I am a very hands-on learner so an apprenticeship is perfect for me. Studying for my degree in this way means that I can earn while I’m training and not rack up huge debt as I start my career. I’ve worked with the Caddick team before at Farington Park so I already feel part of the team. Anyone considering an apprenticeship should go for it. It’s a great route into the industry.” Orlando, who works on a number of Caddick Construction sites, added: “Becoming a trainee whilst also studying for my degree has been the perfect route into the industry for me. I’d always known I wanted to follow in my dad’s footsteps in construction, and initially had my eye on the planning department. This training opportunity will be great for understanding which sector best suits me because it gives me a taste for each, while I study for my Construction Management degree at Leeds Beckett University.”  Recruitment of the new wave of apprentices and trainees has been spearheaded by Caddick Construction Group Managing Director, Paul Dodsworth, who himself began his career as an apprentice bricklayer. Paul Dodsworth, Managing Director of Caddick Construction Group, commented: “I’ve always championed apprenticeships; learning on-the-job is the quickest way to master a skill or trade whilst getting paid. This is especially true for construction. I’ve had a very rewarding career since my apprenticeship and I’m eager to ensure we give young people a good start and add to the industry’s skill set for the future. “This is much more than a personal passion. Investing in skills is about the long-term strength of the Caddick business, succession planning and also our wider industry. Providing real opportunities, passing on our experience and knowledge to the next generation is the only way to future-proof the construction industry. It’s also an incredible way of bringing in fresh ideas; embracing new ways of thinking and increasing diversity, and I’m really excited to see what our new apprentices bring to the team.” Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

Boosting Curb Appeal: Exterior Upgrades That Make A Difference

Boosting Curb Appeal: Exterior Upgrades That Make A Difference

Curb appeal is more than just a buzzword in the real estate world; it’s the first impression your home makes on neighbors, visitors, and potential buyers. A house with an appealing exterior can boost its market value and foster a sense of pride for homeowners.   In home improvements, companies like Prairie Exteriors have gone the extra mile to offer exterior upgrades that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing. They stand out as a testament to innovative solutions that beautify homes.   But how do you determine which exterior upgrades will provide the most significant boost to your home’s appearance? In this article, we’ll explore the importance of curb appeal and some impactful exterior improvements for your property.   Understanding The Importance Of Curb Appeal  Curb appeal is the overall visual impression that a home makes from the street. It’s important for several reasons, including:  By understanding what your home’s curb appeal is like, you can make informed decisions about improvements, sell your property for more money, and enjoy living in a more beautiful place.  Exterior Upgrades That Boost Curb Appeal  There are numerous ways to enhance your home’s exterior. Let’s delve into some of the most effective upgrades: Nothing revives your home’s exterior like a fresh coat of paint. Over time, weather elements can cause paint to chip, fade, or peel. Consider getting a refreshed paint job for your property. Opt for high-quality, weather-resistant paint to ensure longevity. Neutral colors like beige, taupe, and gray are classic choices that appeal to most tastes. However, don’t be afraid to choose bolder shades for doors or shutters to create contrasting focal points. A well-maintained lawn and garden can significantly enhance your home’s curb appeal. Start with landscaping basics like mowing the lawn regularly and trimming overgrown bushes. But don’t stop there. Additionally, plant colorful flowers. Seasonal blooms can bring vibrancy to the front yard.  Also, add mulch as it can help protect plants and offer a polished look to garden beds. Lastly, install a garden path. A stone or brick pathway can guide visitors to your front door while adding an elegant touch. Your front door is a focal point of your home’s exterior. A worn-out door can diminish the overall appearance. Consider either refinishing your current door or replacing it with a modern design. If you’re on a budget, upgrading the door handle or adding a stylish knocker can make a difference. Good lighting is both practical and decorative. For instance, outdoor sconces, hanging lights, or landscape lighting can transform the ambiance of your home after sunset. Furthermore, solar-powered pathway lights are an eco-friendly option that illuminates the way to your door without increasing your energy bill. Cracked or stained driveways and walkways can detract from your home’s appeal. So, consider resurfacing options or replace old concrete with pavers, bricks, or stamped concrete to create a more refined look. Older windows can be less energy-efficient and can detract from your home’s visual appeal. Therefore, modernizing windows can be an excellent exterior upgrade. For example, modern window designs can offer better insulation and come in various styles to complement your property’s architecture.   Additionally, updating window treatments, like shutters or flower boxes, can further elevate the overall look. Siding doesn’t just protect your home from the elements. It’s a significant factor in defining its style. Whether you opt for vinyl, wood, or fiber-cement siding, ensure it’s in good condition. A faded or damaged siding can be an eyesore, so consider power washing or replacing sections as needed to improve the appearance.   Though often overlooked, the roof plays a pivotal role in curb appeal. A sagging or leaky roof can be a potential red flag for buyers. Regular roof inspections can help identify issues early and perform routine maintenance to prevent more serious problems.   However, if your shingles are aging, consider a replacement. Today’s market offers a plethora of styles and colors, allowing you to choose one that best complements your property. Sometimes, minor decorative additions can make a significant impact. For example, swap out old numbers with stylish, modern designs and replace the old mailbox with a unique one, adding a touch of charm to your home’s exterior. Strategically placed planters can also add warmth and greenery to the entrance. A well-maintained fence can frame your property beautifully. If you already have a fence, ensure it’s in good condition free from rust or rot. If you’re considering installing a new one, choose a design that complements your home. Decorative gates can also serve as an inviting entrance to your abode.  Conclusion   Boosting your home’s curb appeal is a combination of various elements. From foundational upgrades like siding and roofing to decorative touches like lighting and landscaping, every aspect contributes to the overall allure.   As you consider the plethora of options available, remember that the objective is to create a cohesive look that reflects your home’s character and your personal style. With careful planning and by keeping the information mentioned above in mind, you can transform your home’s exterior into a captivating sight for all who pass by.

Dandara Living’s Latest BTR Development Tops Out at Stafford Yard in Bristol

Bristol City Council’s Bedminster Green regeneration plans took a further step forward today with a topping out ceremony at Dandara Living’s new Stafford Yard development in Bristol. Situated on a former brownfield site within the Bedminster Green Framework Area, Stafford Yard occupies a prime location within this rapidly developing neighbourhood, just south of the city centre and Temple Meads train station. Representatives of Bristol City Council and invited guests from local businesses and community groups, joined Dandara Living’s CEO Jim Davies to commemorate the topping out of the development. Featuring 295 new apartments, resident amenities including, private balconies, roof terraces with vegetable beds, a gym, lounge, retail space as well as courtyard gardens, Stafford Yard will also deliver 21 affordable homes and is the first of three sites Dandara Living is developing in Bristol. This includes a current application for 339 residential homes adjacent to Stafford Yard on Malago Road/Hereford Street/Clarke Street known as Plot 5 Bedminster Green, and a further site with prominent frontage onto Clarence Road and Temple Gate where Dandara Living has submitted planning for a sustainable mixed-use development opposite Temple Meads station with 432 much needed high-quality homes, resident amenity and retail space. Jim Davies, CEO, Dandara Living said: “Build to rent is already very popular with young professionals who want to live and work in vibrant city centres like Bristol. However, we are also seeing increasing interest and demand from retirees and families for whom the security of tenure, professional management and sense of community that developments like Stafford Yard provide, is very appealing. “Bristol is a vibrant, ambitious city and like many others is experiencing a period of change as people reassess what they want from our cities. Build to rent still makes up a relatively small percentage of the UK’s overall housing sector, however it plays a vital role in maintaining overall housing supply and attracting inward investment. Bristol City Council has demonstrated its recognition and support for built to rent and I hope that our investment in Stafford Yard, Bedminster Green and Clarence Road, demonstrates our confidence and commitment to the city’s bright future. Propertymark: Passing of Second Reading of the Renters (Reform) Bill

Commenting on the passing of Second Reading of the Renters (Reform) Bill, Timothy Douglas, Head of Policy and Campaigns at Propertymark, said: “It is clear that more needs to be done to get the balance right for landlords, agents and tenants. Outstanding questions need to be answered about the role of a reformed judicial system. The UK Government have failed to take seriously the potential impact and the unintended consequences of the removal of Section 21 and the impact this could have on landlords exiting the market, which will do nothing to tackle the demand crisis in the private rented sector. It is important that the details are published and shared. “The UK Government has listened to the concerns of our members with the need for special requirements for the student market, which is welcome, and many MPs outlined how the Bill can be strengthened through a review and reversal of recent tax changes, raising the Local Housing Allowance and local authority capacity to enforce legislation – issues that Propertymark has consistently raised. “Propertymark will engage further at Committee Stage to ensure the Bill is evidence based and the role of property agents is incorporated fairly within the introduction of a new Ombudsman for landlords, and agents can play a full role in increasing property standards.”  Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

The Future of Carbon-Neutral Buildings: Trends and Predictions

The Future of Carbon-Neutral Buildings: Trends and Predictions

By Paul Bullard, Product Director at SFG20, recognised as the industry standard for building maintenance specifications… As the world grapples with the realities of climate change, the construction industry has a significant role to play in reducing carbon emissions.  In the UK, buildings contribute to 33% of the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and 40% of the global energy consumption. This article explores the concept of carbon-neutral buildings, current trends, future predictions, and the role of sustainable building practices in achieving carbon neutrality. Understanding Carbon-Neutral Buildings In a carbon-neutral building, energy efficiency is paramount. Architects and engineers use principles such as passive solar design, natural ventilation, and high-efficiency insulation. In addition to energy-efficient design, carbon-neutral buildings also use renewable energy technologies to generate electricity. This can include solar panels, wind turbines, and in some cases, geothermal systems. The electricity generated by these systems can be used to power the building’s lighting, heating, and cooling systems, as well as any appliances or equipment in the building. Current State of Carbon Emissions in the Construction Industry In the UK, the construction industry is a significant contributor to carbon emissions. The embodied carbon of a building, which includes the carbon emissions associated with the extraction, production, and transportation of construction materials, as well as the carbon emissions from the construction process itself, can be equivalent to 20 years’ worth of its operational carbon emissions. Trends in Carbon-Neutral Buildings The drive towards carbon-neutral buildings is gaining momentum, with several key trends shaping the future of the built environment. These trends reflect a growing commitment to sustainability, energy efficiency, and technological innovation. Solar panels and wind turbines are becoming a common sight on buildings across the UK. As the cost of these technologies continues to fall, they offer long-term cost savings, making them an increasingly attractive option for building owners and operators.  Architects and engineers are using principles such as passive solar design and high-efficiency HVAC systems to minimise energy consumption. Passive solar design takes advantage of the sun’s energy for heating and cooling, while high-efficiency HVAC systems use less energy to provide the same level of comfort. These materials, which include recycled or reclaimed materials, can significantly reduce a building’s embodied carbon – the carbon emissions associated with the production, transport, and disposal of building materials.  By choosing sustainable materials, builders can reduce the environmental impact of their projects while often also improving the performance and aesthetics of their buildings. Smart thermostats, energy management systems, and other technologies can optimise a building’s heating, cooling, and lighting systems, further reducing energy consumption. These technologies can also improve comfort and convenience for building occupants. Future Predictions The landscape of the UK’s built environment is set to undergo a significant transformation. The drive towards carbon neutrality is expected to accelerate, spurred by technological advancements, evolving government policies, and heightened public awareness of climate change. The government’s Ten Point Plan for a Green Industrial Revolution and Net Zero Strategy provides a roadmap for this transition, outlining strategies for improving energy efficiency, promoting low-carbon heating solutions, and encouraging the construction of energy-efficient new homes. Moreover, the decarbonisation of the UK’s electricity grid and the development of a low-carbon hydrogen sector are set to make it easier for buildings to reduce their carbon footprint. At the same time, investments in carbon capture usage and storage (CCUS) technologies could further help offset emissions from buildings and industrial processes. Beyond government initiatives, we anticipate a growing number of businesses and individuals investing in carbon-neutral buildings. As energy prices continue to rise, buildings that generate their own green electricity can offer a financially attractive proposition. The public sector is leading by example, with the government committed to achieving net-zero emissions from its operations by 2050. This sets a precedent for the private sector, demonstrating the feasibility and benefits of carbon-neutral buildings. Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

Construction begins at Oxford and LCP’s “groundbreaking” West Midlands Interchange project – the UK’s largest logistics development site

Construction begins at Oxford and LCP’s “groundbreaking” West Midlands Interchange project – the UK’s largest logistics development site

Oxford and LCP acquired the site in joint venture in 2021 and will invest over £1 billion to develop the park, which will also provide intermodal access through a new Strategic Rail Freight Interchange. The first phase of development has already commenced at the 734-acre site near Birmingham, comprises significant infrastructure works including earthworks, highways construction, water installation and the creation of two new country parks. The first plots will be available for vertical builds from the first half of next year with the site able to accommodate new warehouses ranging in size from 200,000 sq ft to over 1 million sq ft and building heights of up to 30 metres. The site is centrally located in the UK, northwest of Birmingham in the key West Midlands logistics corridor and will deliver significant economic benefit to the region through the creation of 8,500 jobs. It is expected to generate £430 million local economic activity, and £900 million nationally every single year. It benefits from excellent transport connectivity to the UK’s major cities, ports, and airports, with immediate access to the M6 motorway allowing 88% of the population to be reached within a four-hour drive, well inside the HGV single trip limit. West Midlands Interchange will be a technologically advanced and environmentally sustainable development that meets the significant demand from modern occupiers for high-quality, well-located space that can effectively satisfy their operational and environmental requirements. The project is a major milestone in the decarbonisation of UK logistics. It aims to capitalise on the low CO2e output from rail in comparison to road freight, with 70% less CO2 output, up to 15 times lower nitrogen oxide emissions and nearly 90% lower particulate emissions, to support the UK’s net zero targets. WMI could remove as many as 77 HGVs from the road with every freight train, aiming to secure a reduction of 50 million kilometres of HGV traffic annually. Throughout construction Oxford and LCP will be working on an Employment and Skills Plan to maximise opportunities for local people and businesses with a majority of the 8,500 jobs created to be local. Oxford and LCP also want to ensure that the WMI project includes providing employment, apprenticeships, and trainee positions for those who traditionally find themselves out of work. An Employment Fund Steering Group has been established in collaboration with the City of Wolverhampton, South Staffordshire Council and Staffordshire County Council to maximise these opportunities.   James Boadle, Head of Logistics and European Strategy at Oxford Properties, commented: “Demand for best-in-class logistics space that’s sustainable and well connected continues to significantly outstrip supply; especially in the UK’s ‘Golden Triangle’. With spades now in the ground, we are at the first step in the construction of this major project that we are undertaking alongside LCP.” LCP Managing Partner, James Markby, said “We look forward to delivering what will be a world leading logistics hub, with a new Strategic Rail Freight Interchange, while delivering significant economic benefit to the region and nationally, and creating a milestone example for private investment that materially contributes towards a carbon net zero future. Construction firm, Winvic have been appointed on the first phase of the construction. Rob Cook, Director of Civils and Infrastructure said, “Our team is experienced in delivering similar sustainable rail served logistics parks and in working collaboratively to give local people access to construction skills and employment.” For more information on the project visit www.westmidlandsinterchange.co.uk  and https://www.linkedin.com/company/west-midlands-interchange If you have a query and would like to contact the project team, you can reach WMI via: Email: contactus@communityrelations.co.ukTelephone: Mon-Fri 9am-5pm on the freephone number 0800 377 7345 Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals
