5 Key Benefits of Integrating Advanced Alarm Systems in Modern Building Designs

5 Key Benefits of Integrating Advanced Alarm Systems in Modern Building Designs

As a homeowner, the chances are that you often grapple with concerns about your home’s security and safety, facing challenges ranging from unauthorized access to environmental hazards. After all, your home isn’t just a major financial asset, it is also supposed to be a safe, comfortable place for your whole family.  That’s where advanced alarm systems can help. Tailored to tackle these issues head-on, these systems present a forward-thinking approach to building security. They not only deter potential threats but also offer ease and efficiency that traditional methods lack. Discover how these integrations can transform the security blueprint of any home in the guide below.  Enhanced Security Against Unauthorized Access and Environmental Hazards The cornerstone of any robust security plan is protecting against unauthorized access. Traditional locks and keys have evolved into sophisticated systems that can alert you the moment an intruder tries to breach your peace.  But why stop there? Modern systems go a step further by guarding you against environmental hazards – which are often more difficult to detect and more treacherous. With real-time alerts, push notifications, and remote monitoring, you’re immediately informed of dangers like fire, floods, or earthquakes, giving you precious time to react.  Considering that ninety percent of natural disasters in the United States involve flooding – which also stands as the most economically damaging environmental threat – this feature of modern alarm systems offers a shield against a wide spectrum of hazards, securing both life and property. Improved Operational Efficiency Through Real-Time Alerts When it comes to improving your home or business security, staying ahead means assessing your property’s risks and knowing the moment something happens. That’s where cutting-edge alarm company software steps into the limelight.  This isn’t about drowning in a sea of notifications but about receiving precise, actionable alerts the instant something out of the ordinary occurs. Whether it’s an unauthorized entry attempt or a system malfunction, you’re in the loop without delay.  This real-time information flow doesn’t just make managing security more straightforward – it also transforms security into a dynamic, responsive aspect of your day-to-day operations. In practice, this translates into cutting down on response times and ensures that every alert gets the attention it deserves, when it deserves it. Insurance Premium Reductions Insurance premiums represent a major running cost for both homeowners and business owners. Depending on the specifics of your property, you could be paying an average of $1,759 per year to insure your real estate asset! That is why it is important to know that insurance companies value proactive measures. When a building is equipped with advanced alarm systems, it’s viewed as a lower risk for claims related to theft or environmental damage.  The result is straightforward: reduced insurance premiums. By demonstrating your commitment to securing your property against a plethora of risks, you essentially invest in long-term savings, making advanced security not just a measure of protection but also a wise economic decision. Seamless Integration with Smart Building Technologies The future of smart homes doesn’t just involve convenience – it focuses on security. Advanced alarm systems today can effortlessly mesh with other smart building technologies, creating a unified front against threats.  From adjusting lighting to deter potential intruders to shutting down HVAC systems in the event of a fire, this seamless integration means your home not only reacts to threats but does so in a way that maximizes safety and efficiency. It’s a stride toward not just smarter homes, but safer living spaces, where every element works in concert to protect and preserve. Contribution to Sustainability Goals Sustainability isn’t just about reducing your carbon footprint – it’s about smart resource management. Advanced alarm systems contribute to this by monitoring electricity and water usage, and alerting homeowners to leaks or inefficiencies.  This proactive stance ensures that resources are not just conserved but utilized in the most effective manner, aligning your home’s operation with broader environmental goals through thoughtful, technology-driven solutions. Getting Started: Opt For a Tailored Approach To Security A one-size-fits-all solution rarely covers all bases in security. For example, if your property is located in an area prone to wildfire or floods, installing CCTV systems may not be enough to keep your spaces secure. Oppositely, if your neighborhood is affected by high crime rates but rarely experiences flooding, your security strategy should focus on reducing the risk of unauthorized access.  That’s why opting for a tailored approach fully customized to your property’s specific needs is crucial. It ensures that every layer of security not only fits perfectly but also serves a purpose, providing optimal protection.

University prioritises student safety and wellbeing by upgrading to IoT alarm systems within student accommodation

Canterbury Christ Church University (CCCU) has upgraded its student accommodation alarm systems via the implementation of IoT connected smart home sensors from Aico. The university offers guaranteed accommodation, to all students during their first year. Following the most recent British Standard revision for the planning, design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of fire detection and fire alarm systems in UK domestic premises, CCCU sought to upgrade all of its fire and smoke alarms to a Category LD1. This is the highest level of protection and incudes alarm coverage in all areas where a fire could start. Alongside fire detection, Aico’s HomeLINK Connected Home Solution has been designed to gather data on indoor environmental conditions. monitoring indoor air quality, Aico HomeLINK connected devices check temperature, humidity, ventilation, and carbon dioxide levels, enabling proactive maintenance and improved indoor conditions across CCCU’s student homes. The sensors give occupants actionable insights into the indoor environment in their student accommodation to help them prevent condensation, and damp and mould and provide a better experience within their accommodation The Aico HomeLINK solution also minimises nuisance and false alarms, by offering the university’s security and fire teams real-time data and trends in alarm activations to help them reduce call-outs that were not genuine fire or smoke alerts. Aico’s HomeLINK solution gives CCCU remote monitoring for property management so the right departments and people receive custom notifications and tags at the right times. This in itself has saved the university the cost of not-needed call-outs as the Aico Gateway only sends personalised notifications to whoever needs the alert and data. A CCCU Estates Team spokesperson said: “The Gateway system with instant notifications has helped us already to identify which students are triggering the alarms and then addressing the issue. The added benefit of the environmental sensors has led us to prioritise some remedial works to improve thermal efficiency of certain properties. Overall, so far it has shown how technology can benefit us as landlords, and plans are already in place to roll out across more of our properties.” The installation of the Aico Gateway sensors has tackled more problems than initially intended thanks to insights highlighting the key areas that need addressing in properties’ ventilation and insulation, and assuring the university that all of their alarm systems are working as they should. Chris Jones, Chief Executive Officer for Aico|HomeLINK, comments: “Canterbury Christ Church University is just one of the educational institutions we are working with to help keep their students safe and well. By leveraging IoT technology and integrating their teams with constant monitoring via sensors in real-time, the notifications allow the university to determine if there is a fire in progress or if the alarm is just a low battery or false activation in error by one of the students.” Aico|HomeLINK works with educational institutions across the UK, including the Universities of Bristol, Leeds and York, and Harper Adams University in Shropshire, to name just a few. Brad Wain, Regional Specification Manager, Aico, concluded: “I was thrilled to see CCCU implement Aico’s HomeLINK technology. Student accommodation providers play a key role in supporting these students as many leave home for the first time. Providing these properties with not only LD1 multi-sensor protection, but environmental sensors to monitor air quality, showcases the utmost care and consideration for the students staying in these properties.” To find out more about Aico’s HomeLINK Connected Home Solution, please visit: www.aico.co.uk/homelink Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

Hedgehog Havens: commercial security fencing solutions for hedgehog protection

Hedgehog Havens: commercial security fencing solutions for hedgehog protection

Jacksons Fencing, a renowned supporter of wildlife conservation, is making significant strides in promoting hedgehog-friendly security fencing. In 2015, the company became the first British fencing manufacturer to introduce a hedgehog-friendly timber gravel board, for residential use. This breakthrough innovation is compatible with their timber fence panels and slotted posts. This pioneering product not only safeguards fence panels from ground contact but also incorporates a designated hole to facilitate the passage of hedgehogs. This seemingly small modification plays a crucial role in combating the declining population of hedgehogs by providing them with convenient access between areas for essential activities like foraging and mating. Pushing boundaries Recognising the need to extend this initiative beyond residential gardens, Jacksons Fencing is aiming to tackle the matter of hedgehog-friendly fencing in commercial sites too. The company aims to raise awareness among architects, specifiers, and end-users about the availability of hedgehog-friendly fencing options and the importance of incorporating them in their projects. Certain commercial fencing types, such as mesh fencing with larger apertures: V mesh, twin wire panels, and chain link, for example, have recently come under scrutiny due to their potential to trap or endanger hedgehogs. Although attempts to create openings or holes in these fences have been made, they often prove ineffective as hedgehogs may not be aware of such access points or may not be able to navigate them safely. This revelation has prompted Jacksons Fencing to advocate for the species by highlighting alternative products that prioritise both wildlife preservation and high security requirements of sites which require security fencing, where suitable. Safe and secure solutions  Among the recommended solutions, vertical bar fencing emerges as the optimal choice, as it seamlessly integrates security and hedgehog-friendly features. With gaps between pales designed to adhere to anti-trap regulations, hedgehogs can navigate through the fencing effortlessly, ensuring their safety. These fences also feature sturdy construction, concealed, tamper-proof fixings, an attractive appearance, and minimal obstruction to visibility, making them an ideal choice for various applications. Additionally, Jacksons Fencing highlights the advantages of high concealment mesh fencing, particularly their innovative EuroGuard® Combi product. This solution combines rigid V mesh panels with interlaced wooden slats, delivering both privacy and a natural aesthetic while upholding the strength and security expected from a steel mesh fence. The incorporation of timber slats effectively covers mesh gaps, preventing hedgehogs from getting stuck while still providing a secure enclosure. A race against time Considering hedgehogs have been listed as vulnerable to extinction since 2020, Jacksons Fencing is dedicated to actively raising awareness of this pressing issue and promoting the adoption of hedgehog-friendly alternatives. Action is being taken by UK charities. A ‘Hedgehog Friendly Fencing’ campaign was recently launched by Hedgehog Street, a collaboration between People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) and The British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS). Central to the campaign is the establishment of ‘Hedgehog Highways’ as the industry standard in garden fencing, which we applaud. Peter Jackson, Managing Director, Jacksons Fencing says, “Jacksons Fencing has championed Hedgehog Highways for several years. We have updated our product literature, specifications, and online content to educate our customers and specifiers about the availability and benefits of wildlife-friendly fencing options. Prioritising hedgehog preservation and conservation, is just one example of our commitment to sustainability and the well-being of wildlife.” For more information about hedgehog-friendly commercial fencing, please click here.
