National Grid’s London Power Tunnels breakthrough completes £1 billion project’s tunnelling activity

National Grid’s London Power Tunnels breakthrough completes £1 billion project’s tunnelling activity

National Grid’s £1 billion London Power Tunnels (LPT) project has achieved a major milestone with its final tunnelling breakthrough at Eltham substation in Greenwich. The last of the project’s massive tunnel boring machines (TBMs), named ‘Grace’, broke through on Saturday, having tunnelled over 11km eastwards from National Grid’s New Cross substation in Southwark. All 32.5km of the project’s underground route are now complete, with installation of 200km worth of high voltage cable – enough to stretch from London to Cardiff – already underway between substations at Wimbledon and Crayford. In total the project will have shifted 900,000 tonnes of earth – equivalent in volume to half of Wembley Stadium – with 99.98% of waste material diverted from landfill. The LPT project’s newly installed transmission infrastructure is due to be fully operational by 2026, with the aim of reinforcing and future-proofing London’s electricity network – and supporting Britain’s transition to net zero – as demand in the capital grows. Construction of the tunnels began in March 2020 with the tunnelling works undertaken by National Grid’s delivery partner HOCHTIEF-Murphy Joint Venture. Alice Delahunty, President of National Grid Electricity Transmission, said: “Our London Power Tunnels project has achieved a lot since it kicked off in 2020, but the final tunnelling breakthrough at Eltham is a particularly remarkable moment. “This complex engineering endeavour is now really taking shape, with completion of tunnelling now physically linking our sites across South London for the first time and meaning we can move on to the next chapter to progress our vital cabling work. “The outstanding effort by our project teams and suppliers is strengthening London’s electricity network and making sure it safely, reliably and efficiently powers homes and businesses in the capital for years to come.” Santiago Daniele, HMJV Project Director, said: “It’s been an incredible journey so far, from taking over our tunnel drive sites a week after the covid lockdown, to sinking eight shafts and undertaking five tunnel drives with four TBMs over the past three and half years. “With our final TBM drive breaking through at Eltham ahead of the original baseline programme, it’s testament to the collaboration, ingenuity and fantastic joint culture of all involved – despite all of the challenges faced. This remarkable achievement has laid a solid foundation for the Enterprise in achieving National Grid’s vision of rewiring London and connecting with the capital. “We’re incredibly proud to be delivering for National Grid a scheme of such significance – and being their delivery partner of choice for complex major infrastructure involved in LPT Phase 2.” Minister for Nuclear and Networks, Andrew Bowie, said: “Today’s completion is a huge milestone for the London Power Tunnels project, a superb feat of British engineering that will help future-proof our capital’s electricity network. “This is part of National Grid’s wider commitment to rewire and modernise London’s electricity network, significantly increasing London’s capacity and energy security for years to come.” Tunnelling on the LPT project was completed in three sections between existing National Grid substations – Wimbledon-New Cross (12km); New Cross-Hurst (18km); and Hurst-Crayford (2.5km) – with the help of four TBMs named Christine, Caroline, Edith and Grace. Breakthroughs previously took place at Eltham in June 2022 (TBM Christine tunnelling from Hurst), Wimbledon in July 2022 (TBM Caroline tunnelling from Kings Avenue), Crayford in January 2023 (Christine again tunnelling from Hurst) and Kings Avenue in April 2023 (TBM Edith tunnelling from New Cross). Vertical shafts ranging between 9-15m in diameter and up to 55m in depth were constructed along the route, serving as waypoints for the TBMs, and helping project teams safely access the tunnels for maintenance now and when operational in the future (headhouses will be built to cover the shafts for safe future use). The Hurst substation site recently saw a world record-breaking pour of cement-free concrete to fill the base of its 55 metre deep shaft following Christine’s two tunnel drives to Eltham and Crayford. In another first for LPT, National Grid’s new Bengeworth Road substation on the tunnel route in Lambeth is being built free from greenhouse gas SF6 – the only one of its kind to date in Britain and part of National Grid’s ambition for its infrastructure to be SF6-free by 2050. Cartonplast UK Ltd, a subsidiary of the Cartonplast Group, a naturally sustainable business since it was founded in 1967 in Italy, also operates out of Watervole Way in Doncaster and has acquired the new warehouse to provide a new cleaning facility for can pads in the beverage can industry.  Cartonplast Group manages more than 300 million reusable pads ever year, and also includes plastic pallets, top caps and can pads in its portfolio.  The company employees more than 750 people across 12 countries. The 31,090 sq ft last mile distribution unit, which has an EPC A rating, was completed in May this year and includes ground floor office space, 8.87m eaves height, as well as 39 parking spaces, with 2 EV charging  points.  It is strategically located with access via Bessemer Way, linking to the A6178 Sheffield Road and direct access to J34 of the M1 motorway, just a short drive away.  The A6178 also links the estate to Sheffield City Centre just 6.5 miles away to the south west, whilst the M1 links Barnsley to the north and Chesterfield to the south. Dani Raunjak, Associate Director, CBRE’s Industrial team commented: “We are delighted to secure this deal for Cartonplast UK Ltd, which is the ideal space for their expansion plans. Despite wider economic headwinds, occupier demand for industrial/warehouse mid-box units within South Yorkshire remains buoyant. This unit is typically one of the most sought-after types, given its quality and specification, and demonstrates the demand for well located, Grade A speculative development across the region.” James Perryer, Managing Director, Cartonplast UK Ltd said: “As we continue to expand our business, we are delighted to secure this new warehouse in such a strategic location in Rotherham. It’s ideally placed to support our growing orderbook alongside our Doncaster facility.  We are pleased to create more employment for the South Yorkshire region as part of our growth strategy.” Ed Norris, CPP who acted for the landlord commented: “The property offers a high quality, speculatively built unit close to Junction 34 of the M1 on the Sheffield/Rotherham border.  The unit offers a dedicated yard in a popular and established location and isn’t a surprise the unit was snapped up quickly once completed.  The industrial market continues to perform well and we wish Cartonplast every success in the new building.” Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

Dynamon launches ground-breaking Synthetic Telematics ‘virtual electric fleet’ feature

Dynamon launches ground-breaking Synthetic Telematics ‘virtual electric fleet’ feature

Dynamon has launched its ground-breaking Synthetic Telematics feature, which allows businesses to run a virtual electric fleet, modelling exactly how vehicles will perform in real world conditions. The technology, similar to that used by aerospace manufacturers and part of its ZERO software package, can either take existing telematics data or create its own for commercial vehicle fleets that don’t have the information, or can’t apply it. Using ZERO’s extensive, bespoke database of almost all electric commercial vehicles, fleets and consultants can firstly spec exact vehicles in detail, including options such as battery size, tyre choice, weights, optional extras and accessories. They can then create routes, using either existing journeys or by plotting new ones, and set up fleet movements in simulated scenarios that include real world geographic, traffic and road conditions. Added to this can be drop-offs, deliveries, rest stops or charging, as well as driving styles and weather conditions. Synthetic Telematics’ advanced analytic and predictive algorithms show how an electric fleet would operate, based on the parameters entered, which can then be adjusted to determine what a real-world fleet will really need to operate successfully, such as alternative charging methods, other vehicles, new routes or revised operational procedures. “Synthetic Telematics is game-changing because for the first time, fleets can now run their entire operation virtually before a wheel even turns for real,” said Dynamon CEO Angus Webb. “This allows them to make fully informed decisions in every area of procurement and planning, ensuring that the transition to electric is right first-time, avoiding expensive over- or under-speccing of vehicles and infrastructure.” Crucial to the proposition is the ability to create telematics data for fleets that need it, said Webb. Often, fleets may only have partial or incomplete data, or may only collect information on certain operational elements, such as drop off times. Fleets can also struggle to take the data they have from petrol and diesel vehicles and use it to predict how electric vehicles may perform. Synthetic Telematics solves all of this. “The modelling available with Synthetic Telematics changes the way businesses can plan for the future, because it lays out all the data they will need. It shows how vehicles will perform on different routes, in different temperatures. The level of detail is remarkable,” Webb added. Dynamon has done this through the creation of its own database of vehicle information, which included on-road testing for real-world efficiency figures and the calculation of factors such as the effect of certain options, such as different tyres or wheelbases. It can even model the effect of loads and wind direction on battery effectiveness. “We’re now at a stage where Synthetic Telematics can take over from testing. Fleets often try electric vehicles out, but how rigorous can their testing procedure be? Often it can be quite anecdotal, and limited: nobody has the time and money to test all EVs on every route, in all conditions. With Synthetic Telematics, you can do this,” said Webb. As part of the development of Synthetic Telematics, Dynamon undertook its own testing of vehicles on routes and then ran the same trials virtually, to ensure that the results through Synthetic Telematics were accurate. “What we saw was that the results of the modelling were remarkably similar, producing every data point a fleet would need. So, for example, Synthetic Telematics can model how a particular EV would perform if the route was on a Monday morning during rush hour, with a full load, in winter, showing efficiency at any point on a specific road,” said Webb. “Without this incredible level of detail, many fleets are doing fairly basic calculations on EV performance, taking battery size, approximate consumption and distance, and coming up with a number for range, charging need and cost. Synthetic Telematics, however, can show where batteries are being depleted most on a particular journey – perhaps because it is especially hilly, or has a lot of stop-start driving – allowing fleets to reroute if necessary to improve range, or choose another vehicle. “Synthetic Telematics will change the way fleets move to electric,” said Webb. “It allows them to be sure of the type of charging they will need, which vehicles to choose and how to adapt their working operation to accommodate electric. And they can do all of this in a risk-free virtual environment, saving them time and money and ensuring when they do transition to electric, it is right, first-time.” Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

UK households need clarity urgently on future home heating, survey reveals

UK households need clarity urgently on future home heating, survey reveals

Property owners and tenants in the UK are largely in the dark about the future options for heating their homes and many remain unconvinced about the Government’s focus in supporting them with the switch to more sustainable heat sources, according to a new survey by Wolseley, one of the country’s largest specialist providers of heating and cooling systems. The poll indicated an alarmingly low level of awareness of alternatives to gas and oil-fired boilers, and demonstrated a broad need for improved public clarity and understanding as the Government moves ahead with revised energy transition policies following its announcement on 20th September. Responses from 1,000 homeowners and tenants across the UK found that: Of the people surveyed, 54% were renters and 42% owned their home. The survey found a crucial knowledge gap among households, suggesting that the Government needs to provide greater clarity and information: These findings follow the Government’s announcement, which saw the delay to a number of key net zero commitments. The Government plans to extend the ban on diesel and petrol cars, as well as the ban on the sale of new gas boilers, to 2035. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant is also due to rise from £5,000 to £7,500. “Homeowners are still waiting for the Government to clarify how the energy transition will be accomplished. We need more information on the options, an acknowledgement that no single technology will be the solution, better listening to homeowners and installers, and clear alignment of public funds and policy in the areas where it is needed most. Following the recent announcement by the Prime Minister there is even more of a policy vacuum to support reduction of carbon in the home. Policy will need to address the very significant up-front costs to homeowners, and ideally acknowledge a role for hybrid heat pump systems that can offer carbon reductions at a lower cost to the homeowner in many cases” said Simon Oakland, CEO, Wolseley Group. JPS makes trio of strategic appointments amid continued growth

JPS makes trio of strategic appointments amid continued growth

Jewson Partnership Solutions (JPS) has appointed three new senior leaders, as the building materials supplier to the public sector continues to see increased demand for its services and expertise. Ryan Kellingray has been named Operations Director, Ben Lewis joins JPS as Head of Ranging and John Moss has been hired as Business Development Director, with all bringing a wealth of expertise from varied careers within the industry. The hires follow the appointment of Scott Cooper as Managing Director across both JPS and its sister company George Boyd, the architectural ironmongery and commercial door sets distributor, earlier this year. Both brands are part of STARK Building Materials UK and the move helped to strengthen the existing synergies between the companies as they continue to see increased demand from the public sector, particularly within social housing. Cooper said: “The last three years have been incredibly successful for JPS and we have established ourselves as a trusted supplier for housing providers and public sector organisations in the UK. “During this time, we have doubled our turnover and we intend to continue growing in both size and ability, investing in knowledge and skills that will ultimately help our customers and their end users. “By enhancing our senior leadership structure, we can take our quality of service to the next level, as well as expanding our product range to help customers navigate the ever-evolving challenges facing the public sector. Two of our new recruits have previously worked for our customers and suppliers, so they can bring invaluable real-world experiences of challenges and opportunities that our customers face.” Speaking of his appointment, Kellingray said: “I have always looked on and admired the JPS business, especially the recent trajectory it has been on. When the opportunity came up to be part of the business I couldn’t wait to get started and help shape the continued growth we are aiming for in the coming years. “I have a strong operations and sales background, which I’ll be using to help land our growth plan in the market whilst maintaining the strong customer partnerships that have already been developed.” Adding to this, Lewis said: “Having had previous experience in the material supply chain within the housing sector, I’ve had the opportunity to work with JPS and have always enjoyed doing so. I’m delighted to now be supporting the business from the other side, and will be working to improve the customer experience even further so we can maintain a reputation as a truly trusted supplier.” Reflecting on his new role, Moss said: “Working alongside JPS in recent years has given me a great insight into the impressive trajectory of the business and its incredibly collaborative approach with its customers. “My work within the social housing sector for more than 14 years has provided a real understanding of its needs and I wholeheartedly share the JPS passion for partnership. I’m thrilled to be joining the business at such an exciting phase of growth.” Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

Derbyshire care home enhancement works complete

Derbyshire care home enhancement works complete

Three landmark care homes in Derbyshire have finished pivotal works this summer to improve facilities for residents. Led by Midlands-based contractor, G F Tomlinson, and delivered for Derbyshire County Council through the Pagabo Refit and Refurbishment Framework, the works have included a range of improvements to bring the ageing buildings up to an approved standard to enhance the experience for residents. The three schemes include £3.1m works to Briar Close House Care Home in Borrowash, £2.9m works to New Bassett House Care Home in Shirebrook and £2.7m works to Rowthorne Care Home in Swanwick, all of which started in summer 2021 and are due to be finished by autumn 2023. Derbyshire County Council commissioned the improvements as part of a scheme of major refurbishment works to council-run care homes across Derbyshire. Improvement upgrades included asbestos removal, structural roof repairs, new insulation, partition alterations, new ceilings, plaster works, repairs to doors and ironmongery together with the installation of new sprinkler and fire safety systems and new kitchen facilities. The schemes were finished off externally with hard and soft landscaping which included new planters, pergolas, and decorative garden areas for residents to enjoy. The landscape improvements have ensured that all outdoor spaces are safe and accessible, with wider paths and raised beds to enable residents to tend to and enjoy new planting areas. The outside areas have also been designed to be Dementia friendly – and include a sensory garden with lights, wind chimes and fragrant flowers and plants specifically to stimulate participation. Civils works involved the construction of new footpaths and roadways to improve circulation and make the homes easily accessible to care staff and visitors. New drainage has also been installed throughout the sites. As part of their commitment to the environment and supporting local wildlife, G F Tomlinson installed hedgehog highways at each care home. Each project achieved scores ranging from 38 to 41 ‘Very Good’ on the National Considerate Constructors scheme, in recognition of the consideration the contractor gave to residents, staff and nearby neighbours during the construction period. Giving back to the local communities, G F Tomlinson provided a range of social value opportunities at each care home. At Briar Close, the team provided 24 days of work experience to students from local schools and colleges. Other initiatives included Christmas gifts to local residents and furniture replacement following the handover of each area. At Rowthorne, a new washing machine and temporary kitchen was fitted, local litter picks and hedge cutting took place and 15 days of work experience for local young people was provided. The company also donated a defibrillator to the Rowthorne and New Bassett Care homes on completion of the schemes. At New Bassett Care Home, old wardrobes and timber pergolas were disposed of, and the care home entrance slabs replaced, along with moving furniture back in after works and re-fitting curtains, all of which were not part of the original works package. Chris Flint, Managing Director at G F Tomlinson, said: “Delivering these pivotal works for three main care homes in the county has been a tremendous honour and we’re proud that the improvements will ensure the preservation of these much-needed residential care homes as part of the local social care provision. “Despite delays due to Covid-19 vaccination requirements, as we approach completion, we’re looking forward to residents moving back into the new and enhanced homes which will significantly improve their quality of living. “We’d like to say a big thank you to our different site teams for delivering exceptional quality and going above and beyond to deliver social value opportunities in the local communities.” Scott Rice, Project Manager, Concertus Derbyshire Limited, said: ““Projects like this make a real difference to the lives of our most vulnerable elderly people. At all times, GFT acknowledged they were working in what are in reality people’s homes. The homes remained occupied during the works which took place over a number of phases.  “GFT worked closely alongside the home management in order to minimise any disruption – the site teams and operatives have been recognised by the home managers for their consideration towards the residents. Covid threw us a curve ball, and throughout the project the nature of working in phases on old buildings led to many unforeseeable issues arising which were dealt with smoothly and efficiently. We have been kept appraised of progress and changes at all stages which has resulted in remarkable high-quality improvements to what were very tired and outdated properties.” Elliott Talbot, Framework Manager for Pagabo’s Refit and Refurbishment Framework, said: “We’re delighted to see these care home improvements reaching completion thanks to the great work of G F Tomlinson. Our Refit and Refurbishment Framework allowed Derbyshire County Council to find the most suited contractor for this project and streamlined the whole procurement process. A massive well done to everyone who made this scheme a reality.” Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals
