Aston University and Bruntwood partner on strategic developments in Birmingham Knowledge Quarter

Aston University and Bruntwood partner on strategic developments in Birmingham Knowledge Quarter

Aston University and Bruntwood SciTech have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will see the UK’s leading property provider dedicated to the growth of the science and technology sector support the Aston University 2030 Strategy growth plans within the Birmingham Knowledge Quarter. Leaders from Aston University and Bruntwood SciTech, the Joint Venture partnership between Bruntwood and Legal & General, formalised the MoU today (Wednesday 15 March) at the major international property conference MIPIM held in France at an event involving leading infrastructure businesses, investors and government agencies. The MoU includes a commitment to enhance Birmingham’s Knowledge Quarter through jointdevelopments focused on creating a world-class innovation district within the city. More specifically, Aston University and Bruntwood SciTech will establish a Joint Venture that supports the University’s development plans as it seeks to establish a leading science, technology and enterprise precinct with industry and businesses embedded on campus to drive socio-economic transformations in the city.  The MoU will support the strategic objectives outlined in Aston University’s 2030 Strategy, which include elevating ambition through sustainable growth, creating unique value propositions for its beneficiaries, leveraging place and space, building a digital enterprise, and transforming businesses and communities the University serves. The partnership builds upon the pledge made by Exec Chair Chris Oglesby at last year’s Commonwealth Games to invest £1bn in the city over the next decade, and will draw on Bruntwood SciTech’s expertise in developing knowledge economies and stimulating investment in an £850m portfolio of 11 regional hubs across the UK. Bruntwood SciTech’s Innovation Birmingham campus sits immediately adjacent to Aston University and is already home to more than 150 businesses, serving as the West Midlands’ largest digital and tech cluster.  Professor Aleks Subic, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of Aston University, said: “The new Aston University 2030 Strategy builds on our technology heritage that dates back to 1895, when the University was first established as the principal Birmingham Municipal Technical School placed at the heart of the first Industrial Revolution and the manufacturing powerhouse of the world. “The strategic partnership with Bruntwood SciTech aims to realise our bold vision within a new digital era, by creating a leading innovation precinct of international significance centred on science, technology and enterprise. We are committed together to creating an innovation hotspot on Aston campus within the Birmingham Knowledge Quarter that will drive the creation of new high value-added businesses and jobs, and provide our students, staff and partners with unique opportunities and experiences.” Rob Valentine, Bruntwood’s director for Birmingham who signed the MoU on behalf of Bruntwood SciTech, said: “Having worked in close proximity with Aston University as part of our continued investment in Birmingham and the Knowledge Quarter, it’s clear we share the ambition for the city to be a thriving hub for UK R&D that drives innovation on an international scale. “Our experience shows that, when combining the right facilities, academic knowledge and commercial incubation, innovation districts are able to play a leading role in facilitating the growth of regional cities and delivering against the levelling up agenda. This MoU solidifies our shared vision for Birmingham and we look forward to working with Aston University to help it realise its 2030 plan.” Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

Spring Budget Comments – Mark Robinson, group chief executive at SCAPE

Mark Robinson, group chief executive at SCAPE, one of the UK’s leading public sector procurement authorities, said:    “Limitations to public sector spending from the Chancellor were to be expected, with local authorities being told to strengthen their existing budgets and, in some cases, manage real-term cuts. “Public sector investment in infrastructure has been a major driver of growth and community change post-Covid, and the concern is that any long-term reduction in local spending has the potential to limit the positive effects of ongoing regeneration plans. “To this end, the further devolution of powers to the combined authorities in Greater Manchester and the West Midlands is a significant takeaway for the construction industry. Having greater say over local transport, skills and housing will ultimately lead to more focused spending, which can only benefit investment in local communities – be that infrastructure-led or otherwise. We hope this sets a precedent to be swiftly followed in future Budgets.” Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

EnviroHoard protects boundary for installation of Demon by Bowl at Greenwich Peninsula

EnviroHoard® protects boundary for installation of Demon by Bowl at Greenwich Peninsula

Panthera Group was awarded the hoarding contract to secure the site for the installation of a 60ft Damian Hirst sculpture at the Greenwich Peninsula by the Thames in London. Following in the footsteps of Venice and Las Vegas, the ‘Demon with Bowl’ bronze sculpture is being brought to South East London as part of the developer’s vision to make the area the capital’s most boldly modern landscape. Prior to the installation, Panthera Group was contracted to supply and erect 151m of net zero carbon EnviroHoard® 2.4 to the perimeter of the area to ensure a safe working site for contractors and to protect the public from the works. A further 30m length of the sustainable hoarding was installed round the compound area. Both lengths feature environmentally-friendly, custom printed graphics designed to keep the public informed of the transformation of the area. The whole of North Greenwich is being transformed with housing, businesses and a design centre which has a mission to bring together culture, community, design and architecture to create a vibrant 21st Century Space. The site is adjacent to Silvertown Tunnel construction project designed to ease traffic flow in the locality. EnviroHoard® from Panthera Group has also been used to secure the boundary of that ongoing project. Neal James is Managing Director of Panthera Group and was responsible for developing the net carbon zero hoarding solution which has gained considerable traction with Tier 1 and 2 contractors, as well as smaller construction companies that are looking to eliminate carbon from building projects; “We are delighted that EnviroHoard® is now being specified by some of the UK’s leading businesses on many game changing projects in the South East, including Greenwich Peninsula. Over 60% of our hoarding contracts now specify EnviroHoard®, with its fully recycled and recyclable uPVC panels, low carbon Enviroblok™ and durable steel frame. This means we’re not felling trees to use virgin timber for single use hoarding projects. In fact, EnviroHoard® can be used over and over again offering not only environmental benefits, but commercial ones too.” Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

GLP delivers strong operational performance in 2022 across key sectors

GLP delivers strong operational performance in 2022 across key sectors

GLP announced strong 2022 operational results across its businesses in logistics real estate, data centers, renewable energy and related technologies. Key highlights include: Ming Mei, Co-founder and CEO of GLP said: “GLP delivered strong operating performance across its global business in 2022 and is well-positioned for the year ahead. We are focused on scaling our data center and renewable energy business and continue to grow our core logistics business to meet sustained customer demand which has resulted in record leasing activity and an active development market. Sustainability continues to be top of mind as we design, build and operate our assets with environmental performance and innovation to minimize carbon emissions as well as support our customers’ sustainability performance targets.” Logistics In 2022, logistics real estate fundamentals remained resilient as demand for modern logistics facilities increased, driven by global supply chain shifts and growing domestic consumption met by undersupply in key markets. GLP expanded its logistics real estate footprint to 83 million square meters (“SQM”) in 2022, completing 3 million SQM of developments and commencing 3.4 million SQM  of new developments. A total of 27 million SQM of real estate was leased globally – a 12% yoy increase with a group lease ratio of 92%. GLP continues to develop and build its logistics supply chain ecosystem through scaling its cold storage business. The cold chain market is expected to grow with the surge in demand for longer shelf-life and temperature-controlled logistics within the pharmaceuticals, chemicals, food, and beverage sectors. As of 2022, GLP delivered over 3 million SQM of cold storage space across our markets in Asia, Europe and the Americas and continues to identify opportunities to invest in this complementary sector. GLP continues to expand its global customer base, partnering with customers to support their cross-border expansion plans as they enter and grow in new markets. Approximately 21% of GLP’s total net leasable area is let to global customers who utilize GLP facilities in more than one country, underpinned by sectors with strong demand for international growth such as e-commerce and express delivery services. GLP’s modern logistics facilities and value-adding property management services continue to attract repeat customers with steady customer lease renewals. Data Centers GLP launched its data center business in 2018 and aims to deliver efficient and resilient IT load capacity safely and securely to its customers across the globe. Data center fundamentals remain strong with rising demand for local hyperscale data center facilities to support digitization trends such as AI, IoT and cloud services across industries. GLP is currently one of the leading independent data center operators in China with assets that will deliver approximately 1,400 MW of IT load capacity upon completion. During the year, GLP also secured the largest built-to-suit data center in China for a leading domestic internet company. To support sustainable growth of the industry, 100% of new GLP data centers in China are built to meet GB-A/T3+ standards and ODCC certifications. In 2022, GLP announced plans to enter Japan’s data center market, targeting to invest more than $12 billion over the next five years to achieve 900 MW of power capacity.  GLP has since made significant progress on seven development assets in Japan, London and Brazil, including securing prime sites for future data center campus developments in the Tokyo and Kansai regions which will provide approximately 600 MW of IT load. GLP expects to break ground on its first Japan data center campus in Greater Tokyo in 2023, with the first building expected to be ready for service from 2024. Renewable Energy GLP continues to aid the global energy transition and meet clean energy demand by operating and developing assets across the renewable energy value chain including solar energy, wind energy and energy storage solutions. As of December 2022, GLP reached 700 MW of solar energy capacity from onsite solar panels installed across GLP and third-party properties in Asia, Europe and the Americas, resulting in a 68% yoy increase in total solar capacity. In 2020, GLP launched a joint venture with Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd. (“CATL”), the world’s leading battery provider and the largest maker of electric vehicle (“EV”) batteries to create a new platform aimed at expanding the use of new energy through energy-as-a-service offerings to advance sustainability in logistics and transportation. As of 2022, GCTL has rolled out five battery swap stations for heavy duty vehicles with 15 additional stations in the pipeline; each station services more than 150 vehicles per day.  Sustainability GLP continues to make progress on its ESG commitments and targets with its focus on reducing carbon emissions from development and operations as well as supporting customers to meet their sustainability performance targets. We are measuring embodied carbon in our developments through life cycle assessments which help us better understand our impact and identify localized reduction opportunities during design and construction. GLP Shanghai Baoshan Park received GLP’s first LEED EBOM Platinum certification and is one of the first logistics projects in China to receive this level of certification. Carbon emissions in the park were reduced by 2,500 tons of CO2e and the park has achieved carbon neutral operations. GLP achieved approximately 150 new green building and energy certifications last year to reach 480 certifications as part of its 2022 global commitment to build to globally recognized green certification standards. The company maintained its ‘Low’ risk rating and is a top ESG performer by Sustainalytics which measures a company’s exposure and management of industry specific material ESG risks. Winvic Commences Groundworks for 367-bed Purpose Built Student Accommodation Project in Bristol for Madison Cairn

Winvic Commences Groundworks for 367-bed Purpose Built Student Accommodation Project in Bristol for Madison Cairn

Winvic Construction Ltd, a leading main contractor that specialises in the design and delivery of multi-sector construction and civil engineering projects, has been awarded a Purpose Built Student Accommodation (PBSA) scheme by Madison Cairn. After successfully completing the initial enabling works and piling operations, Winvic now commences the groundworks, which comprise under slab drainage and ducts works and installation of concrete pile caps, beams, ring beams and the ground floor slab. The project comprising 367 studios and shared rooms is part of the second phase of Redcliff Quarter, located on the corner of St Thomas Street and Cross Street in Bristol, ten-minute walk from the University of Bristol’s main campus. The concrete frame programme begins in April. It will climb to 12 storeys and the building form is predominantly an L shape to accommodate a 2,700 sq ft, landscaped first floor communal roof garden terrace to the rear. The roof at level 12 has been designed as a blue roof to provide the building with the function of water attenuation.  When complete there will be three seven-bed cluster rooms, 16 six-bed cluster rooms, 11 threedios, 11 twodios, 176 studios and 19 accessible rooms. 4,600 sq ft of flexible communal spaces, ancillary accommodation and storage for 184 cycles will also be found on the ground floor. Handover is scheduled for the first quarter of 2025. The project completes the wider urban block, which it has been designed to complement, and adjoins a new build-to-rent (BTR) project on two elevations. The construction works will be programmed to coordinate with this scheme that Winvic began this BTR for Madison Cairn in September 2022 and will complete in 2025. A number of underground services will be installed and diverted as part of the project and the student accommodation will be connected to the Bristol Heating Network. The Bristol Byzantine style has inspired the external aesthetic along with the prevailing use of brick and stone and metal cladding in the area. Red and black bricks will be used on the façade alongside a contrast of fluted and flat glass reinforced concrete (GRC) and metalwork cladding.  Mark Jones, Winvic’s Director of Multi-room, said: “We’re delighted Madison Cairn has selected us to partner on this scheme. This repeat business is a testament to strong collaboration and the partnership that we have built with this client. Both projects come with their own challenges and deadlines, with this site being particularly constrained on logistics – due to the interface of the adjoining buildings – and the limit space on this city centre location. Nevertheless, the Winvic team appointed to the Redcliff Quarter student accommodation project have a wealth of experience and we are looking forward to safe delivery through to 2025.”   Aneil Handa, Principle at Madison Cairn, said: “This will be one of Bristol’s most sustainable and high-quality student accommodation schemes, which has been designed by working in conjunction with Bristol City Council and the local community. This is the second project that we are working on with Winvic Construction, and we are excited to build upon our relationship in a partnership approach.” For more information on Winvic, the company’s latest project news and job vacancies please visit www.winvic.co.uk. Network Space Developments approach completion on construction of £54million Glass Futures’ Global Centre of Excellence

Network Space Developments approach completion on construction of £54million Glass Futures’ Global Centre of Excellence

Partners and stakeholders recently gathered at The Glass Futures’ Global Centre of Excellence in St Helens to mark the imminent completion of the £54m project, managed and delivered by Network Space Developments (NSD). Contractor Bowmer + Kirkland were appointed by NSD in December 2021 and started on site in January 2022. The main contract works will successfully complete this month and the 165,000 sq. ft building handed over to Glass Futures, ready for the internal fit out works to commence in April. The building is anticipated to be operational later this year. Delivery of the project has been managed by landowner and developer NSD, on behalf of a partnership including not-for-profit Glass Futures, St Helens Borough Council, the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority and UKRI (UK Research & Innovation). The facility was pre let to St Helens Borough Council on a 15-year head lease and sub-let to Glass Futures which will occupy the building to deliver industry and government-backed research and development projects focused on decarbonising the glass and foundation industries. It will also provide a platform for its members  to access an experimental scale furnace for testing and trials of new technology on a state-of-the-art line, both collaboratively and individually. In 2022, NSD pre-sold the building to global investor Standard Life Investments Property Income Trust, part of abrdn, to secure forward funding and conclude a viable delivery strategy. Throughout the construction phase, the scheme has made a significant contribution to the local economy with £11.2m of supply contracts going to businesses within a 20-mile radius of the site, including more than £1m awarded to St Helens’ businesses. Overall, 441 operatives and sub-contractors have been employed on the scheme, including 30 apprentices, with 36 per cent of the labour coming from St Helens, Wigan and Warrington communities. Glass Futures has also appointed its first three apprentices. “Catherine Chilvers, Development Director at Network Space Developments, said: “We’re delighted that we will shortly complete this transformational scheme within the ambitious project timescales we originally set ourselves. The success of this project is testament to the incredible partnership we’ve helped establish and the hard work and commitment of everyone involved in driving this scheme forward.  As a St Helens based business, we’re hugely proud to be involved in a project of this importance and we look forward to seeing its impact, benefits and grow on opportunities being realised within the Borough. “Throughout the construction phase, we’ve worked closely with St Helens Council and contractor B&K to maximise local and regional economic benefits. It’s very pleasing to see the employment and apprenticeship opportunities that have been created and the positive school and community engagement that’s been delivered.” St Helens Borough Council Leader, Councillor David Baines, said: “ It’s incredible to think that this is a project which has only been a few years in the making, and the speed at which it’s happened is testament to a lot of hard work by a lot of people, from the initial idea and drive of people like Richard Katz, to Network Space and Bowmer and Kirkland and all those whose physical labour has built the amazing setting we see today. “Glass Futures also chose St Helens because our history, location, and potential speaks for itself. They know of our town centre regeneration plans; they know about our work to deliver social value, to create local jobs and develop the skills this industry and other modern industries need; and above all else, our ambition and theirs is equally high – for the borough and wider region, and not to forget the small matters of reaching net zero carbon and revolutionising the global glass industry. “In St Helens and the city region we’ve put our money where our mouth is and backed this project to the hilt. I’m serious when I talk about our ambition for St Helens and this project is a key part of our wider plans. Steve Rotheram, Mayor of the Liverpool City region, added: “Building on St Helens’ proud legacy in the glassmaking industry, Glass Futures will help retain the borough’s position as a global centre of excellence. I’m proud that we’ve been able to help make it happen with £9m of city region funding. “I have supported Glass Futures right from the very start, not just because it’s a great project but because it ticks so many boxes for us: decarbonisation of industry, clean energy, new well-paid jobs in a scheme that will make us a world leader. “If we are to hit our ambitious targets to be net zero carbon by 2040 at the latest, at least a decade ahead of national targets, then we will need transformative projects like this to help us – and the planet – get there.” Richard Katz, Chief Executive of Glass Futures concluded: “Ten years ago the founding members of Glass Futures had the idea of building a Global Centre of Excellence to make glass the low-carbon material of choice. We each subscribed to a powerful idea which has since attracted major government innovation funding and industry support leading to the completion of the build phase of the project which will become our new home. “But for us this handover is just the start. We’ll now begin an internal fit out and will install the world’s first openly accessible furnace to test commercially viable technology, which should be operational by January 2024. Capable of producing up to 30 tonnes of glass per day, we’ll be able to collaborate with our global membership, academic researchers and industry leaders to continue our ground-breaking trials into alternative energy sources, raw materials and technologies to demonstrate real decarbonisation solutions for the foundation industries.” Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

Aggreko Invests £150m into European Fleet over 2022-23

Aggreko Invests £150m into European Fleet over 2022-23

Following the announcement of its One Europe strategy late last year, global provider of modular power, temperature control and energy solutions, Aggreko, has confirmed a £150m investment into its European fleet this year. The majority of this investment is centred on the business’ ongoing Greener Upgrades portfolio, comprising of new boilers, Stage V generators, batteries and chillers. Greener Upgrades is Aggreko’s commitment to helping companies choose the most efficient and sustainable solutions to meet their net zero ambitions. It is a portfolio of newer technologies and solutions which lower carbon emissions, NOx and deliver fuel savings. The new fleet is available from Aggreko’s depots across Europe and strategically placed to address local challenges and support flexibility of supply chains. Regions include Benelux, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. Aggreko partners, consults, and delivers for different industries across the world, including data centres, manufacturing, petrochemical and construction. According to its sector experts, most of these energy decision makers are increasingly conflicted by balancing planet with profitability. As such, Greener Upgrades is designed to simplify the decision making process so businesses can make small switches that make a big difference. This could be displacing a 200 kVA generator for a smaller one with a battery, to much larger decentralised energy projects using load on demand configuration to improve efficiency. Aine Finlayson, Director of Product Management and Manufacturing, comments: “Greener Upgrades has been a real step-change for our customers and business in the UK, but there is still so much more to achieve together. The nature of our inbound enquiries has seen a fundamental shift lately, with more people wanting to now minimise risk, save on running costs and meet sustainability goals all at the same time. Our business model is structured to confidently respond to these challenges, but most importantly while keeping things simple for energy decision makers in a time of extreme complexity.” For more information, CLICK HERE Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

ACS Steels a giggle with 80’s themed marketing campaign – whilst raising funds for industry mental health charity Mates In Mind

The game-for-a-laugh ACS Stainless Steel team has gone back to the 80s with their new marketing campaign – a light-hearted video that’s a change of direction for the manufacturing industry – and sure to make any 80’s TV fan laugh out loud. Colleagues from the Leeds-based business star in their very own A-Team spoof, labelling themselves the ‘ACS Team’ as they champion safe and sustainable masonry products – whilst having lots of fun in the process! Gareth Twohey, Commercial Director at ACS, said: “We manufacture technical products and it’s sometimes hard to cut through with technical jargon, so this seemed an effective way to reach our audiences to get their attention and talk to them about some pretty serious subject matter. Plus, we all got to dress up as some of our favourite childhood TV characters and have a blast together in the process! “But, on a more serious note, we also wanted to raise much-needed funds for our industry’s mental health charity, Mates in Mind. Suicide is still the biggest killer of men under 40, with people working in the construction sector significantly more likely to take their own life. I’ve championed mental health issues for a number of years and encourage anyone watching our video to make a donation via the JustGiving page https://www.justgiving.com/page/acs-stainless-steel-fixings-ateam Thank you.” ACS is the market leader in A1 rated products for high-rise buildings – proudly at the forefront of innovation within this construction sector. The new ‘ACS-Team’ video has been released ahead of the company’s much-anticipated brand new product range launch – scheduled for 27th April in London and further venues in May.
