Everton FC Media Release: Rail Seating Set For Install

The first rail seating handrails are set to be installed at Everton Stadium As the seat installations continue at pace, with fast-approaching 40,000 now in situ, the first delivery of the handrails have arrived on site at Bramley-Moore Dock. Everton Stadium will feature rail seating throughout the entire lower tier of the raking south stand for home fans, and also in the lower section of the away end in the north east corner. And initial installations are set to commence imminently in the south stand. Elsewhere within the bowl, all of the ‘P’ handrails have been installed on access stairs, while most of the glass balustrading is in place at the vomitory entrances. Work also continues to install ducting around the pitch surrounds, for the critical infrastructure of undersoil heating, below-ground drainage, irrigation pipes and cables for broadcasters. Work has started on the barrel roof cladding at the south end of the east stand, while the intricately-shaped pieces have been fitted at the northern end, to provide clean edgings. The top-level roof coverings are almost complete on the west stand, and the 172m lengths of top-sheet coverings are set to be rolled out on the expansive south stand, from a specially-adapted shipping container. With the entire site now energised, and all mains infrastructure services are now connected, work is picking up apace inside, where suspended ceilings are being fitted and all catering and concession area equipment installed. The sweeping Western Terrace, facing the River Mersey, is shaping up well, with concrete works now finished, waterproof membranes laid and, at the southern end, drainage layers being excavated in preparation for hard landscaping. Setts and paving along the Mersey river wall add another level of precise detail to what will become a superb vantage point for supporters. Meanwhile, in the fan plaza, more trees have been planted and the third pedestrian gate has been lowered into the gap in the boundary wall that formerly served as the main site entrance for vehicles. All three of the steel gates are now in position, and will be skilfully reintegrated into the wall using existing brickwork. Skilled craftsmen form Vetter, a specialist stone contactor and part of the Laing O’Rourke group of companies, continue to painstakingly pave the 30,000m sq fan plaza that will serve as the spacious entrance to the stadium footprint. And with the former access road that cut through the plaza now redundant, foundations are currently being laid for the installation of historic railway lines, before the two sections of paving are expertly joined up. Local contractor appointed to restore former National Picture Theatre

Local contractor, Hobson and Porter have been appointed to restore and preserve the last remaining WW2 civilian ruin in the UK, National Picture Theatre on Beverley Road. Thanks to funding from Hull City Council and The National Lottery Heritage Fund, the façade will be restored to its former period style, including its iconic windows and signage. Structural elements, including the two large concrete beams, which saved the lives of the 150 people inside the theatre on the night it was bombed, will also be preserved. Set to become a flexible space for community events and education, it will also become a place of reflection for the 1,200 Hull civilians that died during WW2. Hobson and Porter have delivered other heritage projects within the city and work on this historical site will get underway in the coming weeks. Gillian Osgerby, Programme Director at Hull City Council, said: “It is great to reach this key milestone in restoring this iconic site and tell its remarkable story. It’s a reminder of how civilians on the home front were affected by the Blitz. “After London, Hull was the UK’s most bombed city during World War 2 and thanks to National Lottery players, we can now remember and recognise the sacrifice that was made.” The former National Picture Theatre was designed by architects Runton and Barry for the De-Luxe Theatre Company and was constructed in 1914. The building was badly damaged during a Luftwaffe air raid on 18 March 1941, although none of the 150 people inside the cinema at the time were killed or seriously injured. The former National Picture Theatre gained Grade II listed status in 2007 due to its significance as a rare surviving bomb-damaged building from the Blitz of the Second World War. Air raids on Hull went on longer than on any other British city and, out of Hull’s 91,660 houses, only 5,945 survived the air raids undamaged. Remedial work to stabilise the building took place in 2020 and now the major works are scheduled to begin in the coming weeks. It is expected to be complete in the autumn. Travelodge opens its 600th hotel at London Oval Cricket Ground

Travelodge, the UK’s first budget hotel chain, has opened its 600th hotel – located at London Oval Cricket Ground. The milestone was celebrated at a ribbon-cutting ceremony with Travelodge Chairman, Martin Robinson, CEO Jo Boydell, ex-England Cricket Captain and Surrey County Cricket Club Director, Alec Stewart OBE, and Surrey County Cricket Club CEO, Steve Elworthy. London Oval Cricket Ground Travelodge is a 95-room hotel, developed in partnership with Surrey County Cricket Club. The hotel is ideally located for both business and leisure travellers, and is just a minute’s walk from Oval Underground Station. As well as being Travelodge’s 600th hotel, it’s also the group’s 81st hotel in London and has created over 30 new jobs.   London Oval Cricket Ground Travelodge features the group’s new, premium look and feel design which includes a redesigned reception area, next generation rooms and its new restaurant concept, 85 Bar Cafe, offering everything a business or leisure guest (or cricket fan) needs for a comfortable and relaxing stay. Sustainability has been an important factor when designing the hotel, which has a BREEAM Excellent rating, an Energy Performance Certificate rating of A and a number of sustainable features including; Air Source Heat Pumps for heating water; EV car charging; roof mounted solar PVs to convert the sun’s energy into electricity; green roofs to regulate temperatures and save energy, as well as encouraging biodiversity; low energy lighting throughout the hotel, with motion sensing controls; and aerated showers and taps in the bathrooms to reduce water usage.  This hotel is the first new opening for Travelodge in the UK this year, with a further six hotels currently under construction in Rotherham, Colchester and Bristol, as well as three more in London; Bermondsey, Beckenham and Chiswick. The group also recently announced it is due to start construction on a new hotel in Stratford, London later this year.  Travelodge is continuing to develop its UK pipeline and is committed to expanding its hotel network to offer more choice to its customers and support local economies. The group has over 300 target locations for hotel sites across the UK, including over 100 sites across London – which will drive investment and create local jobs. Wavensmere Homes and Clowes Developments’ £75 million proposals to redevelop Friar Gate Goods Yard have been given the go-ahead by Derby City Council. The designs, submitted in August 2023, set out the vision for the reanimation of two landmark Grade II listed buildings into over 110,000 sq ft of commercial space, alongside 276 new build homes. A restoration of the 19th Century Bonded Warehouse and Engine House will deliver a total of 111,275 sq ft of flexible offices, health and fitness space, and a restaurant/café, together with a regional sales centre for Birmingham-headquartered Wavensmere Homes. Extensive new areas of open space, including play areas and pocket parks will be installed, in addition to the retention of the TPO tree buffer, to help enhance the biodiversity of the site. The elevated area adjacent to Friar Gate Bridge will become a new multi-purpose public realm and community space, with retention of some of the original railway arch facades. New vehicular, pedestrian and cycle access will be created at various points around the 11.5-acre (4.96Ha) site, from Uttoxeter New Road, Great Northern Way, and Friar Gate, with the Mick Mack cycling route also to be extended. Friar Gate Goods Yard has been in the ownership of the Clowes family for over 40 years, with a number of options for redevelopment proposed but not progressed, due to heritage constraints and commercial viability. Wavensmere Homes and Clowes developments worked with Glancy Nicholls Architects and Pegasus Group to incorporate the views from over 200 local public consultation responses into the comprehensive plans for the redevelopment of the derelict site. Thorpe Park introduces Hyperia, the UK’s tallest and fastest rollercoaster ride – Lichfields reaches new heights to land planning permission

The planning green light given for the UK’s tallest and fastest rollercoaster is to become a reality for visitors to one of the country’s leading theme parks as Thorpe Park gets set to launch Hyperia to the public next month (24 May 2024). The new £18 million, 236ft height ‘Hyperia’ ride, will offer visitors a nerve shredding experience. The new ride soon to launch at Thorpe Park – Surrey on the outskirts of London, by operator Merlin Entertainments, was supported by planning and development consultancy Lichfields. Set to open to the public on 24th May 2024, the eponymous ride inspired by the fearless Greek goddess Hyperia, will allow up to 20 riders per train to experience a new level of excitement and speed as they hurtle around the 995m-length track at speeds of over 80 mph and reaching heights of 236ft! According to an economic impact assessment, upwards of 123 seasonal and 31 full-time jobs could be created when it opens in May. Thorpe Park is expected to see an economic uplift on the back of a significant increase in visitors keen to enjoy the new rollercoaster ride. Approval for the project secured by Lichfields, is explained by planning director Hannah Whitney, as an important project for the park’s operator Merlin Entertainments, to enable them to keep ahead in a competitive leisure sector. She said: “New rides and attractions are the lifeblood of the theme park industry. We built a compelling case for the ‘Hyperia’ ride, working closely with the local authority to show the need for investment at Thorpe Park – a green belt location – and its long-term benefits. We have drawn extensively on our experience and expertise to deliver an impactful planning case to secure that approval. “It also reflects our ability to handle sensitive leisure developments and get them over the line, working in close cooperation with both local planning authorities and sector developers. It’s experience that can be shared on further big projects as other sector operators look to invest in their infrastructure and assets.” Lichfields advising on major leisure and visitor attraction projects for over 40 years,  continues to advise Merlin Entertainments to develop the Thorpe Park site in the future and ensure its success in the theme park arena. Contractor GRAHAM’s major refurbishment of the famed Europa Hotel in Belfast has been showcased at a launch event, marking the end of the extensive project which spanned five years and saw £15m invested. The redevelopment of the Hotel’s business suite included substantial upgrades to the 12th-floor penthouse suite and seven meeting rooms. The luxurious function space was recently showcased at a launch event in the penthouse suite, featuring an audience with internationally renowned artist, Colin Davidson, who unveiled one of his famous blur paintings that will take pride of place in the hotel’s reception. The painting, called ‘The 71’, depicts a blurred image of a Belfast bus. Davidson is also known for his portraits of many well-known public figures, including Queen Elizabeth II and Ed Sheeran, and his critically acclaimed work ‘Silent Testimony’, a series of 18 portraits of people connected by their experiences of loss through The Troubles. RED Construction celebrates topping out for Zeal Hotel, the ground-breaking net zero carbon hotel in Exeter

RED Construction Group, the specialist main contractor, is celebrating a major milestone in the creation of the £22m voco Zeal Exeter Science Park, one of the UK’s first full life cycle net zero carbon hotels. Being delivered by RED Construction’s South West team, it is being constructed with half the embodied carbon of a standard hotel, while generating 100 per cent of its electricity through solar panels, beating 2030 targets for operational energy consumption and in line with the 2050 Paris Agreement requirements. The topping out of the 4-star, 142-bedroom hotel, which achieved BREEAM Outstanding at the design stage, comes just over halfway through the construction programme, with the building on track to complete in December for an opening in January 2025. Zeal has an exclusive agreement with IHG for the 5,000m2 hotel, which will be the first net zero carbon hotel for both companies, and will be managed by Valor Hospitality. Creating a 4* hotel with a target to be a net energy producer of carbon-free electricity was a significant challenge. However, by working with RED Construction Group and other specialist contractors, Zeal has been able to design and deliver this landmark project. Design has focused on reducing energy use and incorporating renewable energy sources on and within the building fabric, enabling the building to every year generate more electricity than it consumes. This energy efficiency is highlighted by its ability to surpass 2050 targets, dramatically outperforming CRREM’s 95kWh/m2/yr Energy Use Intensity aim by keeping below 60kWh/m2/yr. voco Zeal Exeter Science Park will align with UKGBC’s Net Zero Carbon Buildings Framework Definition, and exceed the RIBA 2030 embodied carbon target of less than 750kgCO2e/m2, benefitting from a full life cycle approach that accounts for Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. Simon Lousada, developer and investor in voco Zeal Hotel, Exeter Science Park, said: “Today marks a pivotal moment in the journey towards sustainable hospitality. By harnessing renewable energy sources, implementing energy-efficient designs, and utilising cutting-edge technology, we aim to create a space that not only provides comfort and luxury but also prioritises environmental responsibility. This project represents more than just a building; it symbolises our dedication to sustainable development – we are tracking ahead of future sustainable goals, surpassing the 2030 sustainability target for carbon emissions during construction, and far exceeding the 2050 target for energy use during operation.
