GMI launches Construction Cares initiative to boost its community programmes

GMI launches Construction Cares initiative to boost its community programmes

GMI Construction Group has launched its Construction Cares programmes, bringing all its community, employability and wellbeing projects under one banner. Led by GMI’s Responsible Business Team, Construction Cares will deliver and support a range of activities in the North East, North West, Yorkshire and Midlands where the construction company operates. It will also encompass its existing support for the Care Leaver Covenant and the 5% Club, which promotes ‘earn and learn’ opportunities. The Care Leaver Covenant, the second Government Covenant, is a national inclusion programme launched in 2018 that supports care leavers aged 16-25 to live independently by creating meaningful opportunities.  GMI became a signatory of the Covenant in 2023, and, as part of Construction Cares, it is committed to advertising job roles to care leavers first and has established a guaranteed interview scheme. The company offers work experience, work trials, employability sessions, and one-to-one mentoring to help participants develop their skills and gain valuable experience in the sector. Recent programmes include DIY skills for care leavers, which have taken place, to date, in Yorkshire, North West and Midlands, with GMI supply chain partners leading sessions for students to gain valuable life skills for those transitioning into independent living and to give them a taster of career opportunities in construction.  All attendees are provided with travel and lunch expenses and given a GMI home toolkit to take home with them upon completion of the three-day course.   The sessions are already delivering positive outcomes with two participants gaining full-time construction apprenticeships and four have chosen to sign up to full-time constructions courses at college, which is getting them back into education. GMI also runs ‘Constructive Kickabouts’ sessions for care leavers, organising monthly football matches to provide a social and sporting setting and meet new people.   This was launched in Manchester in 2023 and monthly sessions are now taking place in Birmingham. The 5% Club is a UK employer-led charity, which inspires and educates businesses and organisations to take positive action for increased, inclusive, and accessible workplace training for all.  GMI currently holds Gold accredited membership of the club in recognition of the significant contribution it has made to the continued development of its employees through ‘earn and learn’ schemes. Community outreach forms a key element of Construction Cares with GMI regularly supporting causes and organisations local to its schemes.  This has included the construction of an extension to a SEND school, a kitchen in a community centre and woodland play and learning area at primary school. Through ‘Constructing Communities’, GMI also supports the Daniel Baird Foundation charity, by installing bleed kits at its city centre sites, in locations such as Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester, York and Bristol.  The kits improve the survival chances of those who might have been stabbed or suffered traumatic injuries close to the sites. Claire Preston, Head of Responsible Business at GMI, said: “We believe in helping shape more than the built environment in the regions we operate, but having a positive impact on those communities.  Construction Cares is an amalgamation of a variety of initiatives we have been running, bringing them under one banner that will allow us to give a greater focus to our CSR activities. “We have built strong partnerships with local authorities, charities, education establishments and organisations, like the Care Leavers Covenant, which is helping to create opportunities for people from all backgrounds.  Through Construction Cares we will be making a positive difference to individuals and communities, supported by our dedicated team and supply chain partners.” Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

Trowers advises Gamuda Land on £100 million joint venture

Trowers & Hamlins is delighted to have acted for Malaysian developer Gamuda Land in relation to a £100 million joint venture with Singapore-based Q Investment Partners, to establish a platform for investment into the UK purpose built student accommodation (PBSA) sector. Storyblok’s CMS helps Octopus Energy use content to power the future of green energy

Storyblok’s CMS helps Octopus Energy use content to power the future of green energy

Octopus Energy is now able to deploy website updates in five minutes, and has seen a two-thirds decrease in requests for support from developers Storyblok, the modern content management system (CMS) for all teams, today announced that Octopus Energy is using its CMS to manage content more efficiently and decrease dependence on developers. Octopus Energy is a global clean energy tech business, driving the affordable, green energy system of the future. Their previous CMS required significant developer involvement for every content task and was very limited in its flexibility and customization options. This led to a fragmented content management setup that was slow and prevented collaboration.   Knowing that this wasn’t sustainable for their dynamic content needs, Octopus Energy made the switch to Storyblok. Now they use Storyblok to centralize content management and integrate all of their platforms through APIs, give content creators the components they need to create experiences without the help of developers, and closely manage user roles to improve collaboration. Storyblok is used by 19 teams across 6 business functions in 8 countries. With that combined teamwork, Octopus Energy is able to create a website from scratch within 2 weeks and deploy updates in 5 minutes. The typical creation and publishing time has been cut by 1-2 days, with smaller projects getting delivered on the same day. This smooth process led to a two-thirds decrease in requests for support from developers. Aaron Cawte, Senior Front-end Developer at Octopus Energy, said: “Storyblok’s Visual Editor empowers our content editors to click on the content they want to change and see the results in real-time. This enabled us to roll out Storyblok at speed with zero training, and our teams around the world have taken to it like ducks to water.” Based on this success, Octopus Energy plans to continue using Storyblok for various projects, including the migration of over 1,000 pages from a legacy CMS, and the expansion of their mobile app content. Sascha Ploebst, VP of Sales at Storyblok, said: “Storyblok makes it possible for everyone on the team to be a part of your content efforts. Octopus Energy has seen firsthand why using a CMS that can be adopted by multiple teams, departments, and regions is a smart business decision.” Dominik Angerer, CEO and Co-Founder of Storyblok, said: “Octopus Energy views energy in the same way we view content: it should be efficient and nothing should be wasted. By centralizing content with Storyblok, Octopus Energy is experiencing the benefits of reusable content across all of their platforms.” Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

Milence begins development of its first UK charging hub in Immingham, pioneering sustainable transport in the region

Milence, the joint venture between Daimler Truck, the TRATON GROUP, and Volvo Group, announces the development of its first charging hub in the UK. Construction has now commenced and is underway, with the hub scheduled to be operational with the completion of the first phase in November 2024. Strategically located within the United Kingdom and Europe Immingham, strategically located on the east coast of England, boasts robust internal connections facilitated by excellent road and rail links, including direct access to major motorways such as the M180, M18, and M1, ensuring efficient cargo distribution across the UK. These extensive connections and capabilities solidify Immingham’s position as a key logistical hub, enhancing its role in facilitating trade and transportation between the UK and the broader European market. The hub is to be located on Able Humber Port (AHP) – a 311ha deep-water offshore wind and renewable energy port and more than 1,000 metres of planned heavy-duty quays to be developed on 43.1ha of riverbed. Peter Stephenson, Founder and Executive Chairman of AHP stated: “We are delighted to be welcoming Milence to Able Humber Port to develop one of the first electric charging HGV hubs in the UK. This is an exciting step forward in supporting the decarbonising of the Humber Ports and assisting Able Humber Port and the region transition towards net zero.” About the charging hub The new Milence charging hub will be the first of its kind in the UK, representing a significant step towards a greener future for road transport. The development of the charging hub in Immingham will be carried out in multiple phases: Anja van Niersen, CEO at Milence: “Expanding into the UK with our first charging hub in Immingham represents a significant milestone for Milence. This strategic location not only enhances our ability to support the growing demand for sustainable transport solutions but also aligns with our commitment to driving the future of green logistics across Europe.” Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

St. Modwen opens former Longbridge West Works site to public

St. Modwen opens former Longbridge West Works site to public

The home of the former West Works car factory in Longbridge – birthplace of the iconic MINI car – has reopened to the public for the first time in almost two decades, after master developer St. Modwen handed over 27 acres of public realm. The 75-acre mixed use site – which encompasses Longbridge Business Park and will ultimately see the delivery of over 340 new homes by St. Modwen Homes – is now open to the public, giving residents access to large open park spaces, a rejuvenated river corridor, and over 2.5km of cycle and footpaths which is already creating a dynamic link between the community, Longbridge Town Centre, and beyond for residents and visitors alike. Throughout the route, interactive trail boards have been installed which offer captivating insights into the local ecosystem and the rich and storied history of the region. In addition, the West Works project has undertaken an extensive tree-planting initiative, with over 3,000 new trees planted across the property replacing the once concrete factory floor. This landscape invites individuals to immerse themselves in nature, learn about the plants and wildlife, all while savouring the vibrant energy of Longbridge Town Centre. Sarwjit Sambhi, CEO of St. Modwen reiterated the company’s commitment to the community of Longbridge, stating: “The success of our Longbridge regeneration project demonstrates what can be achieved through collaboration between the public and private sectors. Our vision for the region has always been to provide a diverse range of development which can benefit both the local community and businesses alike. Having already attracted industry-leading, global businesses to Longbridge Business Park, we will shortly be delivering much-needed houses on the site which will leave a lasting legacy of our time in Longbridge.” Rob Flavell, Senior Director at St. Modwen said: “The opening of the public realm at West Works is a significant milestone in the wider Longbridge regeneration project and an exciting new chapter in the legacy of the region. “It has been heartwarming to see how quickly the completely restored mile-long River Rea has become an asset of real community value, with the cycle and footpaths which connect the site to the rest of Longbridge proving incredibly popular with residents, families, workers and visitors alike.” Longbridge Business Park, a specialised hub for science, technology, medicine, and precision engineering, is positioned within the West Works site as the centre of innovation and entrepreneurship in the region. With five R&D businesses already established within the park, the project is poised to generate up to 5,000 new job opportunities, fostering economic growth and prosperity. In addition, St. Modwen will also be delivering 343 homes at the West Works site through its housebuilding arm, St. Modwen Homes. The West Works site was an integral part of the former MG Rover plant, once the largest car factory in Europe, but is now part of St. Modwen’s wider £1bn regeneration of the 468-acre Longbridge site, which it acquired back in 2005. The brownfield project is seven times bigger than Kings Cross regeneration, and has transformed the former factory into a flourishing town centre with over 68 business already calling Longbridge home and thousands of jobs and homes already created. Damien McGarvey, headteacher at King Edward VI Balaam Wood Academy, said: “The new West Works trail path is a fantastic addition to the area and provides a safe, clean route for many of our pupils to walk to and from school. The path is already proving very popular, taking footfall away from the nearby busy dual carriageway and providing a pleasant walk through nature.” Building, Design & Construction Magazine | The Choice of Industry Professionals

HEATHERLANDS BY ANTLER HOMES SCOOPS THE PRESTIGIOUS PREMIER GUARANTEE EXCELLENCE AWARD

Heatherlands by Antler Homes Scoops the Prestigious Premier Guarantee Excellence Award

Design-led, customer-centric housebuilder Antler Homes has received a coveted Premier Guarantee Excellence Award for its Heatherlands development in South Chailey, East Sussex. This award recognises the development’s consistently impressive site work. As a recipient of this monthly recognition, Heatherlands is among the top 10% of Premier Guarantee sites nationwide. This achievement also places Antler Homes on the shortlist for a National Award, which will be announced in June/July 2025. The national Excellence Awards honour the best developments in the UK that are covered by Premier Guarantee’s structural warranties. The company’s surveyors nominate sites that showcase exceptional quality. To win, a development must be built to the very highest standards – as is the case at Heatherlands. Heatherlands is the second phase of Antler Homes’ Old Hamsey Lakes development. The scheme launched in 2022, transforming a former brownfield site into a sought-after collection of homes in a stunning lakeside setting, surrounded by fields and ancient woodland. Heatherlands is home to 13, two- and three-bedroom houses in the captivating village of South Chailey. Nature reserves, conservation areas and the South Downs National Park are on the doorstep, offering a plethora of outdoor experiences for those pursuing an active lifestyle. The Premier Guarantee Excellence Awards judges commented: “On every inspection carried out by our surveyors, they award scores for site tidiness, workmanship, health and safety, and both site and overall cooperation. If you hit an average of 4.6/5 for 3 months consecutively, an area manager will do an impromptu visit for verification. That is then sent over to our Awards team, who do a further verification and decide on whether to award. Antler’s success in navigating this rigorous process and securing this award is a testament to their unwavering commitment to quality developments.” Andrew Rinaldi, Managing Director of Antler Homes, commented: “I am so proud that Heatherlands at Old Hamsey Lakes has won a Premier Guarantee Excellence Award. This is a wonderful achievement that highlights the quality and care that the entire team has poured into the creation of the homes at Heatherlands, ensuring they can be enjoyed by generation after generation. My thanks go to all of those involved in such a fantastic team effort.” Heatherlands – and the wider Old Hamsey Lakes development – is home to a flourishing community with nature at its heart. Considerate plot spacing and generous gardens ensure the homes echo the tranquillity and space of the surrounding countryside, while varied layouts and property sizes meet a range of buyers’ needs. The homes’ contemporary interiors feature shaker-style kitchen units and underfloor heating. Each plot comes with an electric car charging point for buyers keen to minimize their carbon footprint. South Chailey is part of the larger Chailey parish, home to the 450-acre Chailey Common. Residents enjoy easy access not only to nature but also to the historic market towns of Lewes and Cooksbridge. Trains from the latter reach London Victoria in as little as 63 minutes.
