Keyline, the UK’s leading specialist supplier of civils and drainage solutions, heavy building materials and specialist products to the rail industry, has supplied an innovative drainage product to assist in the successful completion of a specialist engineering project on a railway line in Cumbria. Construction firm Story Contracting sourced and installed the CUBIS FLEXI Pits as part of a Network Rail project to provide off-track drainage for a section of railway in Rose Ghyll, near Maryport.

FLEXI Pit has been designed to dramatically cut both catch pit installation time onsite and delivery turnaround. The product, manufactured by Cubis, the leading manufacturer of access chamber and ducting systems, accommodates drainage duct entries measuring from 150mm to 450mm. It is based on the STAKKAboxTM Ultima access chamber, a system that is as strong as concrete but light in weight. An innovative sliding backfill barrier, which is easily adjustable to achieve the correct invert level, has been added to the Ultima chamber pit. These new design aspects have reduced the onsite installation time to just 18 minutes (on average) per chamber, which ensures that there are no costly delay penalties.

Following a demonstration at Story’s offices in Carlisle, the construction specialist ordered 11 FLEXI Pits for the project. Keyline despatched the products to the designated site on time and in full, as per Story’s requirements. The FLEXI Pit is currently being stocked in bulk at two of Keyline’s distribution hubs, which means that orders can be fulfilled immediately.

A representative from Story Contracting, said: “During the demonstration, Keyline highlighted FLEXI Pit’s wide-range of benefits, including how it was quick to install, robust, and the ease of adjustment for pipe connections when onsite. This innovative product helped our team of specialists to complete this important project efficiently and effectively.”

Mike Rees, Rail & Geotechnical Manager North and Scotland, Keyline, said:
“It is our objective to recommend and provide our clients with the most state-of-the-art products that add value to any project. The FLEXI Pit’s easily adjustable sliding backfill barrier helps engineers to achieve the correct pipe invert levels whilst onsite, removing the need for technical drawings and therefore allowing for rapid turnaround from our stocking depots.”
