GW Power-Safe was established in Hull in 2014 by managing director, Daniel Haley after he was made redundant from his job as an electrician. Today it offers a full range of renewable energy, mechanical and electrical solutions to public sector clients and businesses across all industries. The company now employs a 37-strong team and is actively recruiting electricians, plumbers, gas and heating engineers, air conditioning engineers, renewables specialists and apprentices this year. In recent years, GW Power-Safe has diversified into decarbonisation and the renewables sector, and two years ago Daniel co-founded C3 Group which provides sustainability consulting services to businesses around the UK, focussing on sustainable energy solutions, carbon reduction plans, feasibility studies, funding and net zero strategies. C3 Group is headed up by Ash Wray and currently employs a team of four sustainability consultants and designers. In recognition of his work in decarbonising buildings, as well as the success of both GW Power-Safe and C3 Group, Daniel was recently presented with an Octopus Energy Springboard Entrepreneur Award by Octopus co-founder, Chris Hulatt. He was nominated for the award by Kingston upon Hull West and Haltemprice MP, Emma Hardy. This follows GW Power-Safe also being named as Hull College’s Apprentice Employer of the Year. GW Power-Safe celebrated its tenth anniversary with a celebration in Hull’s Victorian Paragon Shopping Arcade. During the event, awards were also presented to team members who go above and beyond. These were voted for by their colleagues and included Apprentice of the Year, Zuzanna Radzewicz, Engineer of the Year, Aiden Armstrong, Office Champion, Amy Mumby and Rising Star, Dion Wilkin. Daniel said: “After leaving school and becoming an electrical apprentice at Hull College, I qualified as an electrician but when I was suddenly made redundant in my mid-20s, I decided the time was right to start my own business and GW Power-Safe was born. We now provide a full range of mechanical and electrical trades to all types of clients, as well as becoming a renewables specialist. “As part of this we’re now working on solar, commercial battery and air source heat pump installations for public sector organisations such as NHS Trusts and education establishments across the north of England. We also recently secured a place on the Crown Commercial Services’ renewables framework, which provides the public sector with decarbonisation services to support their carbon net zero strategies. “This is already proving to be a big growth area for us which will result in double-digit revenue growth this year as our turnover reaches £12million. Our team is also growing in line with this and as well as recruiting up to 10 qualified and experienced engineers this year, we’re always committed to investing in apprentices. After I came into the industry as an apprentice, I know how important it is to invest in future talent. We already employ seven apprentices and will recruit another four in the coming months.” Finally, Daniel added: “Another area that’s driving growth has been the launch of C3 Group and its ability to collaborate with G3 Power-Safe to provide clients with an end-to-end solution, from design right through to delivery, for their decarbonisation needs. G&H Group has secured a multi-million pound contract to deliver a complete mechanical, electrical and public health (MEP) design and build to Manchester’s original skyscraper, Sunlight House. Appointed by main contractor MYCO and developer Karrev, G&H Group will support the refurbishment of the iconic Grade II listed building, improving its energy performance and helping it achieve a net-zero carbon footprint. A 40-strong team including apprentices will deliver a full MEP design and build which will transform the 14 storey Grade A office, ensuring it achieves four star NABERS* and BREEM** sustainability ratings. As part of the contract G&H Group will install a solar PV system, new energy saving lighting, fire, access control and CCTV systems, heating and cooling systems, and upgrade the power services. Andrew Dunkin, project manager, MYCO said: “To be a part of the team which brings Sunlight House back to its original glory is very exciting for me as a project manager and I look forward to working with G&H Group to make this happen.” David Davis, director, G&H Group said: “We’re excited to be collaborating with MYCO on the restoration of Sunlight House, a building rich in heritage and of the finest architecture. Yorkshire headquartered building services consultancy, Tate Consulting, is expanding further into the aviation industry after winning a string of high-profile contracts on major airport infrastructure upgrades. The company has provided full mechanical and electrical design services on one of the world’s most advanced hangars, known as Domus III, which has just opened at Farnborough Airport. Tate Consulting was appointed by Farnborough Airport and architecture practice, Gebler Tooth, which designed the highly sustainable £55million, 175,000 sq ft building. Features include translucent automated doors that run the entire building length optimising natural light, an intelligent lighting system, symphonic rainwater harvesting, eco-friendly heating and integrated building control and energy monitoring to ensure optimal energy usage. This latest hangar project follows Tate Consulting working with Gebler Tooth on a 225,000 sq ft maintenance, repair and overhaul hanger for Gulfstream that can accommodate up to 13 aircraft. The facility, which is also at Farnborough Airport, opened in 2020. In addition, Tate Consulting has also just completed work on a security screening investment at Farnborough Airport. This has seen the installation of two state-of-the-art cabin baggage screening lanes equipped with the latest C3 screening technology, along with advanced security scanners. The technology means passengers no longer need to remove electronic items, such as laptops, tablets and phones from their cabin baggage during security checks. Passengers can also carry up to two litres of liquids through security without removing them from their bags. After completing the project at Farnborough Airport, Tate Consulting has now been appointed to work on a similar security screening project at Newquay Airport, which will start this summer. The company is also designing the building services for a new lounge at Farnborough Airport that will be operated by a luxury private jet company, with further future developments planned as part of the airport’s expansion plans. The Wirral-based mechanical and electrical company is expecting to double last year’s £1.5m turnover this year and in the meantime has converted its fleet of vehicles to 100 per cent electric. The latest additions are a brand new Maxus T90 EV pickup truck and two Renault Kangoo L1 E-Tech vans. Each has been supplied on a new lease hire arrangement which managing director Chris Hannon expects to save expenditure on both acquisition and running costs of the vehicles. The savings follow advice from Hannah Pearson, the regional business development manager for Vanaways in the North West. “We were spending £400 a week on diesel,” said Mr Hannon, “and now it’s about £150 per week for charging, at around £7 or £8 per charge at home overnight. Over the course of the year that’s a significant saving, and the install costs for the chargers are paid off quite quickly. “Combined with the savings on the costs of acquiring the vehicles – the truck alone was not far off half the price of what a diesel one would be – we’re really grateful to Hannah for the advice. “These savings are going to help us reinvest in the growth of the business over the next few years, starting with the introduction of our new electrical division.” Based in Pioneer House in the Wirral, Mech NW employs 25 staff and was set up by Mr Hannon four years ago. The company provides renewables, mechanical, plumbing and electrical services to numerous nationwide construction contractors and some tier 1 M&E contractors, mainly on installations in new multi-occupancy properties like care homes, student accommodation, hotels and apartment blocks. “There’s a lot happening in the North West and we’re looking forward to meeting the demand for our services,” said Mr Hannon. “Having a good van supplier will be a great feature of our journey going forward, and the electrification of the fleet is important given the attention our clients pay to the carbon footprint of their operations and their supply chain.” Vanaways is itself undergoing spectacular current growth, having moved into new offices in Ham Green near the M5 at Bristol early last year. Company turnover has risen dramatically in 2023, while staff numbers have risen to 72 and the business is on track to deliver sales on more than 6,000 vehicles in 2024. Working with a vast network of suppliers across the UK, the company offers free delivery with a digitalised sales process which enables quick fulfilment of the customer’s fleet needs. Bradford College was awarded £5.8m from The Office for Students Higher Education Capital Fund to transform a derelict building into a state-of-the-art STEM training and education facility to benefit students studying digital, science and allied health subjects. G&H Group was appointed to support main contractor Tilbury Douglas, a leading UK building, infrastructure, engineering and fit-out company, following a successful tender submission. A 20-strong team, including four apprentices, will deliver a complete mechanical and electrical design and build for the new, cutting-edge higher education facility including lighting, power, heating, domestic services, gas and ventilation. To support the requirements of Part L of the building regulation and the college’s sustainability commitments, G&H Group has designed the heating system to facilitate the future installation of air source heat pump technology, ensuring that all installed emitters and pipework can operate at lower system temperatures.
