Tate Consulting spreads its Wings in Aviation

Yorkshire headquartered building services consultancy, Tate Consulting, is expanding further into the aviation industry after winning a string of high-profile contracts on major airport infrastructure upgrades. The company has provided full mechanical and electrical design services on one of the world’s most advanced hangars, known as Domus III, which has just opened at Farnborough Airport. Tate Consulting was appointed by Farnborough Airport and architecture practice, Gebler Tooth, which designed the highly sustainable £55million, 175,000 sq ft building. Features include translucent automated doors that run the entire building length optimising natural light, an intelligent lighting system, symphonic rainwater harvesting, eco-friendly heating and integrated building control and energy monitoring to ensure optimal energy usage. This latest hangar project follows Tate Consulting working with Gebler Tooth on a 225,000 sq ft maintenance, repair and overhaul hanger for Gulfstream that can accommodate up to 13 aircraft. The facility, which is also at Farnborough Airport, opened in 2020. In addition, Tate Consulting has also just completed work on a security screening investment at Farnborough Airport. This has seen the installation of two state-of-the-art cabin baggage screening lanes equipped with the latest C3 screening technology, along with advanced security scanners. The technology means passengers no longer need to remove electronic items, such as laptops, tablets and phones from their cabin baggage during security checks. Passengers can also carry up to two litres of liquids through security without removing them from their bags. After completing the project at Farnborough Airport, Tate Consulting has now been appointed to work on a similar security screening project at Newquay Airport, which will start this summer. The company is also designing the building services for a new lounge at Farnborough Airport that will be operated by a luxury private jet company, with further future developments planned as part of the airport’s expansion plans. Ray Cavanagh, director from Tate Consulting, said: “The C3 screening technology is the highest-rated aviation security equipment on the market and will significantly enhance the experience for passengers at Farnborough Airport. We’re now looking forward to using our experience on this project at Cornwall Airport Newquay. “We’re also delighted to see work complete at Domus III, which has been another groundbreaking project for us to be involved with. Crucially, airport hangars come with their own unique design challenges, especially because they have vast doors that can be open for long periods of time, so this must be correlated with an effective and efficient heating system. “We’ve also become very experienced working with specialist design items including aqueous film forming foam sprinkler systems that provide a high-level deluge, as well as adhering to Civil Aviation Authority and National Fire Protection Association design standards. “Aviation is now a big growth area for us as we establish an impressive portfolio of pioneering projects in the sector, which we’re looking forward to building on further and we’re already discussing several other projects with architects and specifiers on airport projects throughout the UK and beyond.” Tate Consulting is a leading building services consultancy, providing a full range of commercial engineering solutions from MEP concept design to project handover and post-occupancy evaluation, as well as building physics, fire engineering services, sustainability and building performance assessments and master planning. Fast-growing Merseyside M&E selects Vanaways as vehicle partner

Rapidly-expanding Merseyside M&E contractor Mech NW has selected Vanaways as its vehicle provider for its ongoing growth journey. The Wirral-based mechanical and electrical company is expecting to double last year’s £1.5m turnover this year and in the meantime has converted its fleet of vehicles to 100 per cent electric. The latest additions are a brand new Maxus T90 EV pickup truck and two Renault Kangoo L1 E-Tech vans. Each has been supplied on a new lease hire arrangement which managing director Chris Hannon expects to save expenditure on both acquisition and running costs of the vehicles. The savings follow advice from Hannah Pearson, the regional business development manager for Vanaways in the North West. “We were spending £400 a week on diesel,” said Mr Hannon, “and now it’s about £150 per week for charging, at around £7 or £8 per charge at home overnight. Over the course of the year that’s a significant saving, and the install costs for the chargers are paid off quite quickly. “Combined with the savings on the costs of acquiring the vehicles – the truck alone was not far off half the price of what a diesel one would be – we’re really grateful to Hannah for the advice. “These savings are going to help us reinvest in the growth of the business over the next few years, starting with the introduction of our new electrical division.” Based in Pioneer House in the Wirral, Mech NW employs 25 staff and was set up by Mr Hannon four years ago. The company provides renewables, mechanical, plumbing and electrical services to numerous nationwide construction contractors and some tier 1 M&E contractors, mainly on installations in new multi-occupancy properties like care homes, student accommodation, hotels and apartment blocks. “There’s a lot happening in the North West and we’re looking forward to meeting the demand for our services,” said Mr Hannon. “Having a good van supplier will be a great feature of our journey going forward, and the electrification of the fleet is important given the attention our clients pay to the carbon footprint of their operations and their supply chain.” Vanaways is itself undergoing spectacular current growth, having moved into new offices in Ham Green near the M5 at Bristol early last year. Company turnover has risen dramatically in 2023, while staff numbers have risen to 72 and the business is on track to deliver sales on more than 6,000 vehicles in 2024. Working with a vast network of suppliers across the UK, the company offers free delivery with a digitalised sales process which enables quick fulfilment of the customer’s fleet needs. Leading building services engineering practice, Tate Consulting, has promoted Aaron Stevenson to director of its Belfast office. The promotion is in line with the firm’s ongoing expansion programme and numerous high profile contract wins, which will create more jobs in the coming months. Aaron joined Tate Consulting at the end of 2021, which coincided with the Yorkshire headquartered company’s expansion into Belfast. Since then, Aaron has worked alongside fellow Tate Consulting director, Jim Lee, to grow the office organically and it now employs a 10-strong team close to Belfast City Airport in the Belmont Office Park on Belmont Road. Prior to joining Tate Consulting, Aaron spent 25 years working for several other well-known engineering firms in Northern Ireland. In his new role, as well as overseeing the delivery of projects and leading the team, Aaron is responsible for managing the office’s finances, policies and recruitment, with plans already in place to appoint several new people, including associates and senior associates. The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) announce their partnership to make CP1 (2020), the recognised Code of Practice for heat networks in the UK, accessible to all, free of charge. CP1 (2020), a publication produced by CIBSE, serves as a comprehensive guide offering technical guidance and establishing voluntary minimum standards for UK heat networks. Widely acknowledged as the go-to resource in the industry, CP1 (2020) has garnered widespread acceptance and support since its last update in 2020. It has been utilised by industry professionals as a vital technical reference and by developers to set standards for their new heat networks. Previously available exclusively to CIBSE members, CP1 (2020) is now accessible to all stakeholders, thanks to the generous funding provided by DESNZ. This collaborative effort aims to democratise access to crucial information outlined in CP1 (2020) and facilitate better preparedness for the forthcoming heat network regulations in 2025. CIBSE and DESNZ are not only removing the paywall but also actively collaborating to update the voluntary Code of Practice throughout 2024. This joint initiative ensures continuous alignment with the evolving regulatory landscape, particularly with the Heat Network Technical Assurance Scheme (HNTAS) standards under development. Tilbury Douglas has appointed G&H Group to provide all mechanical and electrical design and build services for Bradford College’s Garden Mills Refurbishment Project.  Bradford College was awarded £5.8m from The Office for Students Higher Education Capital Fund to transform a derelict building into a state-of-the-art STEM training and education facility to benefit students studying digital, science and allied health subjects.   G&H Group was appointed to support main contractor Tilbury Douglas, a leading UK building, infrastructure, engineering and fit-out company, following a successful tender submission.  A 20-strong team, including four apprentices, will deliver a complete mechanical and electrical design and build for the new, cutting-edge higher education facility including lighting, power, heating, domestic services, gas and ventilation.  To support the requirements of Part L of the building regulation and the college’s sustainability commitments, G&H Group has designed the heating system to facilitate the future installation of air source heat pump technology, ensuring that all installed emitters and pipework can operate at lower system temperatures. On planned completion in August, ahead of the start of the new academic year, the renovated mill will boast cutting-edge dental facilities including a specialist dentistry suite, a prep room, six higher education digital IT labs, an ophthalmic dispensing suite, a real-life work environment with consulting and testing booths, a clinical suite, and academic teaching spaces. Balfour Beatty gets to work on nine overhead line and substation projects for SSEN Transmission

Balfour Beatty has begun work with SSEN Transmission on the development of nine Electricity Transmission projects across the north of Scotland. The work forms part of SSEN Transmission’s ‘Pathway to 2030’ network redevelopment programme, to which Balfour Beatty was appointed in August 2023. This first phase of works will see Balfour Beatty provide technical solutions for: During this initial phase of works, Balfour Beatty will provide its expertise to support SSEN Transmission to identify and resolve any potential construction challenges, streamline the planning process, advise on the best use of materials, plan the phasing of work to ensure optimal productivity and scope out the use of modern methods of construction. In addition, and as a result of this level of early contractor involvement and the long-term nature of SSEN Transmission’s Pathway to 2030’ network redevelopment programme , Balfour Beatty will strategically map the talent required to deliver the nine projects, enabling the company to invest in capability and expertise, and provide long-term career opportunities to people in the surrounding area, including Apprenticeship and Graduate roles as part of the company’s commitment to The 5% Club. This award marks the first step in the delivery of the onshore transmission infrastructure required for SSEN Transmission’s ‘Pathway to 2030’ programme, which will contribute to securing future energy independence by enabling the connection and transportation of affordable, homegrown, low carbon power. Main construction is expected to commence in 2026, with energisation of all nine projects expected by 2030.
